sorry if this is already posted; I did a search.
I just heard this on the way home, so the details are still fuzzy. Radio station Q101 in Chicago today played a song off of the new White Stripes album (or maybe Jack White has a new solo album, either way). The album will release in 3 weeks. The radio station called the record label to let them know that they would be playing the song. The album was passed on to the radio station from someone who had downloaded it, which happens with leaks ALL THE TIME.
Not long after the song aired, the radio station got a phone call from none other than Jack White......from Spain! Jack White was not happy, called the station naive for giving his album away, and other things that made no sense. The station was actually creating hype before the record release and the artist calls and gives them hell. That is crap.
Well, if I am a musician and I create something, I would want to be able to present that creation in a way I choose to do it, not on the terms of a radio dj who got an copy of my music and decides he is more capable of presenting it to the world than I am.

Yeah I'd probably be pretty pissed if I was him too. Some radio DJs can be dicks. No offense if anyone here is, cause there are some pretty awesome ones as well.
The band/label releases a single to give them hype if the station chooses to play it, so that's what Icky Thump is for. For them to play an illegally downloaded song from the album is just not classy of them. I'd be pissed as well if an album or a piece of it I had worked hard on to present in a certain way at a certain time was heard outside of that pre-planned set-up, especially with a radio station promoting that those leaked songs are out there. That's sort of lame and trashy too that they called the label to tell them they were playing it. They were basically asking for it.
Is this the solo Jack White song I heard on the radio here in Denver today?
I just assumed it was from a soundtrack or something I hadn't heard before. It was kind of cool, pretty solid, but I really didn't pay it all too much mind. Q101 is notorious for sh*tty moves.

i know that leaks happen and thats just the way it is. i would never blame fans for downloading them but for a radio station to take the next step to BROADCAST something that they know isn't supposed to be released... that is just wrong! the radio station should follow copyright rules because they have a public license. Jack has a right to be pissed.
if that music hasn't been released yet is it actually covered by BMI/ASCAP?
I guess that he has a right to be pissed and all but I've gotta think that there are better things to dedicate time and energy to than being angry at a radio station for playing your music. That said, the station clearly should not have played an entire unreleased album without consent.
definately a dick move if they said they weren't gonna play it then did. ive heard one single off icky thump on radio stations by me in ny. maybe cause its the single?

I didn't realize they broadcast the entire album; jack's comment about "giving his album away" makes a little more sense now, but it's not like the station told everyone to go download it (well, maybe indirectly...).
I was of the understanding that they called the record label as a courtesy and if the label strongly objected they would not have played it. I don't actually know how these things work so maybe I am wrong.
I think the details still remain a little fuzzy without hearing the phone call, which the station said they won't air. such is life.
I agree that the station shouldn't have played the album without permission. Besides for it probably being against copyright law, it just isn't right. I would like to know why Jack or his label is waiting to release it. I'd luv to buy a copy before Roo, because I just know the Stripes are gonna play some of the new material.
It makes the album known to be available to download when people know it has been played in public like this. You can find the radio rip of the album almost anywhere now, less than a day later.
