I just listened to a couple Widespread Panic albums, and I had pretty much figured they were going to playing Sunday night where they are. I can say that - although I do enjoy a lot of jamband type music (Phish, Umph, SCI, moe., etc) - I really do not like Widespread Panic. It reminds me a bit of a cheap combination of Dave Matthews (who I do not like) and the Grateful Dead. I wasn't too excited about seeing Phil Lesh last year, but my girlfriend was so we got a good spot and it was a pretty good show (besides the rain), but I'm not sure about WSP. Part of the reason Phil Lesh was good is because I was familiar with many of the songs (even though I'm not a GD fan), and I don't see myself enjoying WSP's show at all. I'm not sure why they're so popular with the Bonnaroo crowd. Maybe it's because I'm not stoned? So my question is - do I just sit through it and try and maybe enjoy it? Do I go back to my tent and get a good night's sleep? Do I walk around a (mostly empty?) centeroo and find something to do? I'm sure there's gotta be a few people who won't care to see them (maybe some Tool fans?), so where do we go?
btw - I know I will get smited a few times for this post, I expect that
I'm the same way, I never really liked Widespread either. I plan to go to that show mostly out of interest in Jimmy Herring. They say it's a whole new band so I'm gonna give it another shot.

My suggestion is to head over to the brooers tent and grab a couple kind brews, then set up one of those nice, comfy camping chairs somewhere around the main stage and enjoy. Who knows, you might be surprised.

If you and everyone you're going with isn't really into seeing WSP you could always leave during their show... it'd be a lot less hectic for you getting out.
Also, I see your karma is in the negatives and I feel bad for you. pity karma.

I consider myself a "jam" fan first and foremost, but I have never been a huge panic fan, a little too southern for my taste, but I will be at the show, if the collaborations at WP in 05 are any indicator, there will be some very special guests on stage for most of the show, and it's the last show, there is nothing else going on.
Not a big Widespread Fan, but I attribute that to the fact that I rarely go out of my way to listen to it, who knows I could like it... But my plan for this show is to sit in the crowd and maybe stumble across a few good smokes...

You cant gather anything from their albums. I did not like them, or really see them, in 05', but i've since listened to some of their Herring shows, and its a lot better. Listen to one of their shows during the Herring era before you write them off.

I too have never been a big panic fan, but since the addition of jimmy herring I will be there. ive heard too many good things to not check it out, but normally they arent my thing.

I'm in the same boat. I'm willing to give Herring a chance, but I'm really not expecting much. I've seen Herring play with other bands I'm not to fond of, and I wasn't overwhelmed.
Brooers tent is a good idea. Then maybe I'll be more likely to enjoy panic's set
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it
I agree with all of you. I was disappointed to hear they are playing all 4 days. So i listened to them an a few songs. I thought they were ok. Not anything to write home about.
We'll enjoy the art or comedy stuff. That's what many people will possibly do.
"That's the big thing about education. People can be book smart, but not really intelligent about anything else. A lot of times they just taking in all this information and regurgitate it. It's much more important to process it and personalize it. To apply it to your world, to your life. You have to walk the walk, or you can't really report about it honestly."
I don't like Panic either really, and I've seen them 3 times and never stayed for the full show. But I do love Jimmy Herring and I am giving them one more chance. I love jambands more than anything really, but I just can't get into Panic. And their studio stuff, personally, I don't like. I like a few songs live, but it always felt like they play the same song for 4 hours to me.
I also gave you karma qwe because it's silly to get smited for not liking a band.
Wow, I feel like I may be the only Panic fan around. They were really great in 02 and I used to watch them play little bars around here back in college. The guys were really cool and did some great shows.
Haven't seen them yet with Herring but, frankly, since it's the last show of my Bonnaroo...I'll be there....I'll be havin' fun...and I hope to see you there.
thanks for the karma guys, I'm back at zero! yay! heh well, I guess it could be worse than WSP, I could sit far back and just listen. I'm sure I'll leave before the 3 hours is through, and get some most-likely-much-needed sleep. Actually quite a few "jam-band" type bands sound pretty crappy on disc (like Umph's last studio album, which wasn't so great) but live they're awesome, so I guess: who knows...
I was surprised to see them as a headliner as I've never heard anyone talk about them and even people on the boards here don't get all riled up about them. I wasn't impressed by the studio stuff I've heard, but I'll dig into some live sessions. I'll be there for awhile and stay as long as I'm interested.

This'll be their 6th headlining set. I can understand why they headline, I just don't love them that much.
Well seeing as I love WSP i'll be there but I was in the same boat last year for Phil. I say beside walking around for an hour or so and looking at stuff you may have missed maybe just head out early. We left early and it there was pretty nice to be able to get out before all the comotion we had heard about.
Listening to WP albums and seeing them live are very different. Personally, I heard a few of their songs from different albums and wasn't a huge fan until I saw them at Center City Fest in Charlotte, NC. Besides, there is a reason they have headlined so many roo's. They just plain jam live, that is what they're all about. Besides, all of roo will converge for one last hurrah with Widespread. Have a few drinks, do what you gotta do and come enjoy the energy of the whole thing. Monday morning will come all too soon and then it's 360 more days to wait. Sharin in the groove!
i have never listened to wsp but i watched their entire set the first night they played in 05. they were alright, but i don't get the hype, why everyone thinks they're so awesome. i pretty much agree with the one that said they play the same song for 4 hr. so i won't be seeing them this year. we're not going to head out that late though, so he we will just hang out and relax and leave in the morning.
I love when people smite because someone doesn't like their band. I had lots of karma until I said I didn't like Rat-dog, but loved Phil. How could I saw such a thing??
We are leaving Early sunday. WSP has a little to do with that.

That's because the dynamic of Roo has evolved since the beginning as a jammy festival, even the new Rolling Stone states that the best jam band festival is the All Good in WV. Take a look at the early year's artists as a comparison
