i look at it this way: if the Police were the #1 headliner, regardless of who the #2 headliner was, if Tool couldn't make it, WSP would rise to the status of #2 headliner. with a draw like the Police & the ol' standby WSP shouldering the burder of the headliner load...wouldn't this be a great transition year for one of the acts who's been a pre-headlining act in previous years to rise up and take on the challenge of #3 headliner? someone like a moe., umphrey's, mmj...i know under normal circumstances none would probably be headline material but under these, i wonder...
See, i think its the opposite. I think if you have someone like that headline you need two huge bands, like The Police and Tool to headline. With The Police and Widespread, theres just not enough star power for a smaller band to headline. Almost every year theres been 2 big headliners, and with coachellas lineup thats a must this year.
i know theres an issue with how much time they could fill, but couldnt the white stripes fill in, maybe white stripes and friends/guests...i think that would be pretty sweet

The Secret Machines.
I know...I know, a man can dream. But hell it would be cool to see if they could pull it off. If given the opportunity to play for 80,000 people I am pretty sure that everyone there would walk away from that show in amazement.

I would agree that Harper and the IC's would be the most likely to move up. I don't know if any of those other bands listed (MMJ, Umphrey's) would have enough of a draw to hold down a headlining spot. I'm not saying they couldn't do it musically, I'm saying I don't think they are big enough yet, even with bonnaroobians. Saying that, I still think that Tool will do everything possible to keep the date. Headlining the premier festival in the U.S. is an opportunity that doesn't come around every year.

This is the worst news ALL day, heck, all WEEK. I swear, if they don't headline...i'll be hard pressed on whether or not i'll be going. I'm so freaking worried and depressed now, it's not even funny.
I think we'd see an SCI type show before The White Stripes.
you already have a jam band headlining sunday...wsp...in keeping format with the previous three headliners (if tool isnt able to do it, which i think they will no problem) isnt there need for a rock show?

SCI is actually changing their music quite a bit, thats why nershi's leaving. I think they're more easily universally accesed now, and its a possibility for a lot of guest. And in 05 they were all jam band headliners.
Let String Cheese headline Friday. The Police Saterday. Panic on Sunday. That lineup would be great! Or add the Alman Brothers they can play all night!! Warren already there with Mule it could happen.
If we get an addition of the secret machines, umphreys, and primus tomorrow, that may ease my worrys.
you bring up an excellent point. SF/AC has gotta know that this annoucement is shaking some people's confidence in the 'roo. anyone else think they'll feel an additional responsibility to announce some killer additions before tickets go on sale? at the least i think they have to address the surgery announcement before a panic gets started.
Maybe I'll throw myself to the dogs, but my back's not to the wall Maybe I'll lay some bricks for the man, but the days just aren't that long So if I settle back and chill will I see far enough to feel the angel's dream? I thought it was the Story of the World!

If TOOL truly is out, I do not want any headliner replacement, unless it is huge. If they hae no chance at getting anyone, the only smaller band I could see them giving a shot would be MMJ. While I would love to see them let MMJ headline, I doubt they do it.
ummm - I think they WILL play - after all - it is 4 months from now - we don't know if the tear was big or small - or how long it might take to rehabilitate - it might only take a few months

yea after i posted i realized thats its been only 1 year since they had all jam bands, but it kind of seemed they were changing their format, especially with tool this year. and i havent heard sci in a while so if they can do it sure, i was just tryin to fill it with something that rocks, besides nin or something

This really blows...
I don't even want to consider the possibility of Tool not playing. I mean, yeah it would still be a great fest without them, but you can't replace Tool... seeing them perform live is an EPIC experience.
If we do see a replacement for them (which I hope and pray with all my being that Danny recovers quickly and they make it) I would see it being RATM. I mean, Morello is already there...
