I didnt like the song on leno, but i think he still has a good voice. But if he were playing a bunch of crappy stuff, it wouldnt even matter.
I agree, his voice still sounds good, but the content of his songs nothing more than a posh attempt to reinvent himself as a patriotic folk hero. Weak sauce.

Mellencamp often uses America and discussion of politics in his songwriting, but until recent years, many of his songs were in opposition to the government or patriotism. A few years ago he was singing about the racism that still exists here and the illegitimacy of the 2000 elections, now he sings this:
From the east coast To the west coast Down the Dixie Highway Back home This is our country
That poverty could be Just another ugly thing And bigotry would be Seen only as obscene And the ones that run this land Help the poor and common man This is our country
From the east coast
To the west coast Down the Dixie Highway Back home This is our country
The dream is still alive Some day it will come true And this country it belongs To folks like me and you So let the voice of freedom Sing out through this land This is our country
^^I believe he's referring to MLK Jr's speech when he talks of "the dream" and while the song is hokey, it's still hokey in a left leaning sort of way. It's still a call to get rid of racism and poverty, just a schmaltzy one that can easily be editing down for car commercial use
