Tool's shows are geared toward "mind-altering" experiences. They don't try to freak you out by being overly dark and aggressive (they really aren't, anyway). If you really listen to the lyrics, they are more about politics and mind expansion than devils and killing.
I think some people on here have a distorted view of Tool. Hopefully, they will get the memo mid-June that Tool is no average metal band.... or metal at all. They are prog. rock.
More Smashing Pumpkins than Metallica, imo.
I haven't had my "mind-altered" since New Year's 2001.... I may make an exception for this show.
The opening lines to "Third Eye" off of Aenema:
"'See, I think drugs have done some good things for us, I really do, and if you don't believe drugs have done good things for us, do me a favor. Go home tonight and take all your albums, all your tapes, and all your CDs and burn 'em. Cause you know what? The musicians who made all that great music that's enhanced your lives throughout the years? Rrrrreal fuckin' high on drugs.'
'Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed into a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness, experiencing itself subjectively, there's no such thing as death, life is only a dream, in which is an imagination of ourselves. Here's Tom with the weather.'
'It's not a war on drugs, it's a war on personal freedom, is what it is, okay? Keep that in mind at all times. Thank you.'
Dreaming of that face again.
It's bright and blue and shimmering.
Grinning wide
And comforting me with it's three warm and wild eyes.
On my back and tumbling
Down that hole and back again
Rising up
And wiping the webs and the dew from my withered eye.
In... Out... In... Out... In... Out..."
If that is overly dark and inappropriate when taking part in a 'mind altering experience', I must be missing something. It is PERFECT music for such an occasion.
'See, I think drugs have done some good things for us, I really do, and if you don't believe drugs have done good things for us, do me a favor. you're correct that these were all on that CD, however if you like/agree with/find those funny, all of those statements were actually made by a comedian named Bill Hicks. had some REALLY funny routines about drugs, alas he is no longer with us
Maybe I'll throw myself to the dogs, but my back's not to the wall Maybe I'll lay some bricks for the man, but the days just aren't that long So if I settle back and chill will I see far enough to feel the angel's dream? I thought it was the Story of the World!

funny...while their first couple of albums have been fairly pissed off, alot of 10000days is about his mom dying of cancer...or being abducted by aliens. just because the music is "heavy" doesnt make them negative. again, all I can really say is that once they do their thing, we will all be on here june 19 talking about how kick ass their show was. it really doesnt matter if you are on anything, sober, hippie, metal-head, etc....this show is going to floor you.
I have a decent video of a live show from this tour, so if anyone wants to get a feel for them, sonically and visually, just shoot me a msg, and I can send it to ya.
and to those who are praising mars volta over tool....*shakes head*....I saw that same tour with APC and TMV...and I must say...TMV shouldnt be allowed to carry maynards mic stand...oh yeah...and the bill hicks thing...they put that on the album because they really stood behind Hick's thoughts and ideas....and bill thought the same about the band....
i have seen TOOL twice and neither show was really that great. but i do like them. i find this idea that TOOL = violent fans is hilarious. i'm sure that is the same stuff that was said of Led Zeppelin fans back in the day. that fact is that the guys in the band are all about Peace and Love. and their fans just like good music like everyone else ---they just happen to appreciate some good 'ol crunchy distortion.
they are also a very pyschedelic band with alot of imagery in their music. their stage show will be extremely visual. i think that TOOL fans today would have been Pink Floyd fans in the 70's.
one more thing... i am hoping to see a massive HIPPIE MOSH PIT!! everyone will love each other as they thrash around in circles. that would be so great. YEAH!!!
well i think the massive hippie mosh pit is what most of us are talking about when we say we are worried about the new crowd. i for one dont wanna see it at roo. and ive heard that tool dosent really like it either. and i have never heard of a massive mosh pit at pink floyd or led zeppelin.
But how about lets erase that stuff from the site? I mean you could combine some not so choice things on a google search and bring up this thread/website.

so nobody's worried about the meatheads? there's a big elephant in the living room that everyone's avoiding here.
The meatheads will just go to the regular Tool tourdates...I doubt a large contingent of them will want to camp for several days in the sweet stink & pay over $200 if they're only interested in Tool (& Clutch).

not only that, but he and maynard were actually friends. if you don't know anything about tool, watch a bill hicks act and there you go. there's where your head should start.
i agree with kid a, im more worried about the tennesee and southern tool fans. tool isnt touring down there and bonnaroo might be they're only oppurtunity to catch the band and it might attract an odd element to bonnaroo.
but on the topic of party favors at tool. are you gunna tell me tool is any more dark or depressive than say radiohead or even pink floyd. its all about your mind state and how you interperet it.
I think the melodies of tool would be unreal under the influence, but the lyrics are pretty deep and can really get you thinking. I think it might take you to a place you may not want to be at during a concert.

Okay, I've been on a huge Tool kick since the announcement, for one I am super excited, cause I've been a fan since day one (Opiate), but on the other hand, I am really having a tough time realizing that a band this heavy will be gracing us with their presence, as a headliner no less! Anyways, I can't wait, but on the other hand I am scared.....(shitless)
Umm - Tool is touring down here - they will be in Southhaven, Mississippi; Baton Rouge, LA and Birmingham, AL. Southhaven is already sold out.
your right,. but still no tennesee. mabey its diff in the south but up here we wouldnt go more than like an hour or so away for a concert like that.
but then again mabey in the south you have to trek far when bands come through. i live but 10 minutes from philly, and an hour and half from NYC.
Jackson, Mississippi - 3 hours from Memphis, 6 from Dallas, 2 1/2 from New Orleans and 6 from Atlanta - 4 from Birmingham. Nothing comes here - always have to go out of town for good shows.

Oh there will definetly be some trippy videos on the screen when they play. As well the singer likes to stand at the back of the stage and put more emphasis on the musicians themselves.

Southaven, MS is literally 30 minutes outside of Memphis - it's like a suburb of Memphis, just in a different state. Tool is playing there Mar. 30. A lot of "Memphis" concerts are held in Southaven.

ok thats cool. its just funny to think that i only have to drive 10 minutes to get to 3 stadium, 2 outdoor venues, and 4 mid to large size clubs. i never really raelized how spoiled i am.

About the dvd....they're creating one with footage from this tour, not necessarily Bonnaroo.
Some Tool lyrics are very deep and do a great job of expressing frustration with today's society. Some lyrics are overtly negative and scarcastic just for the fuck of it. Sometimes you have to read between the lines.
For those of you that haven't seen them, get ready for an awe-inspiring performance similar to Radiohead last year. Those that have, hopefully we get that 2.5 hour set loaded with oldies and extended jams. Their setlist has become extremely predictable these days, but that has to change for Bonnaroo, doesn't it?

Have you ever read the lyrics to 'Stinkfist'? Disgusting... lol.
I guess, if you read deeply into it, the lyrics are about people always pushing the limits as far as they will go, but it is a pretty vivid example.
