are there going to be mosh pits at bonnaroo this year?
I doubt that any moshing will occur. I saw them at the San Diego Street Scene last year and a bunch of people started to surge froward during the set. Some people started falling over. Maynard simply stopped the show and said they weren't playing anymore till everyone took 2 steps back. Of course this did take about 10 minutes but everyone complied. He said and I quote " This isn't worth getting hurt over. Come on it is only Rock N' Roll."
Just got a little more respect for him. I think theres a fine line a band has to make where they have to tell the crowd to calm the f*ck down. After Roskilde 2000 and what happened with Pearl Jam, I think every band needs to keep the crowd in check. This becomes a big issue when youre talking about serious injury and death for a f*cking concert.

To the guy who said Tool hasn't played many festivals and mostly plays during the day, what are you talking about??? Tool has headlined Coachella twice (1999 and 2006). I can see Tool playing between 2.5 and 3 hours. And for anyone still doubting the Tool appearance (which I originally posted on wiki and predicted way back in early fall of 06), go listen to Reflection and The Patient. You'll change your mind quick.

Relax. Very few people are doubting Tools sonic quality. Most people on this board are extremely open-minded to music and I'm sure have some kind of past experience with Tool. Look, I know we have rules on this board, but lets be real. Most people (Myself included) are just a little disappointed in their role as a headliner. I'm totally psyched to see them play, but like I said lets be real. I'm not going to speak for anyone but myself here. I don't want to be "enjoying" my face off listening to extremely aggressive music. I'm going to refrain from calling it hateful or anything along those lines, but it is very harsh with deep distortion and yelling. It can also be very depressing. I'm just pissed that I have to decide between catching their entire set until 11/12ish and kicking off partying very late, or just flat out leaving halfway through to go have some fun and catch other acts. Whereas on other nights the partying and catching the headliners are the same thing, you don't even want to see me during The Lips set. I'm going to get a human tiki tower going.
Look, sorry for the opus but its complicated. I think alot of folks feel this way. Mainly the idea that Tool doesn't really fit into the vibe, and these days there are few things that don't. I can't wait to catch them as I use to be a big bootleg collector and I know what they can do. I'm sure Ill wind up slamming some drinks and smoking during their whole set and setting out later.
BTW- speculation on Wiki sucks. It ruins the entire concept of a factual online encyclopedia.
this is a fairly sweet show from this tour...check it out, and Im sure you will like it.
Thanks for that. SBDs make me happy, so you get some Karma. Like I said above, Im sincerely excited to see them play. I just wish it could be at Roseland or something along those lines.

Yes, you are correct about one big thing...
Drugs (other than weed) and TOOL would probably not be the best combo.
i thought trey said they are the most psychadellic band out right now.
Sounds like Trey was on something when he said that. Hold a tool performance up to a FLips performance as far as pyschadelia goes.

I think id be just peachy seeing Tool under the influence. I was very far under the influence for Mars Volta late night, and it was awesome.
I personally classify Tool much differently than TMV. Tool lacks much of the outside musical influence that TMV has. TMV uses alot of different styles in their music whereas Tool seems to stick to what works. While under the influence of psychadelics there are very few things musically that turn me off. Power chords and yelling are one of them. Like I said though, Im too excited to see them perform to let this get in the way. I think some Jager and bud will do me justice during their set. Im just not too thrilled with starting the late-night Bonnaroo experience off a little later than planned.

I saw Tool live in 2002, on mushrooms. One of my best, most poignant - and oddly enough, positive - psychedelic experiences ever. I know everything affects everyone differently, but that's just my experience.
i was thinking of chocolates for Tool - since that's not usually a full blown WOAH!@
but i agree with stuckinutero "I don't want to be tripping my face off listening to extremely aggressive music. I'm going to refrain from calling it hateful or anything along those lines, but it is very harsh with deep distortion and yelling. It can also be very depressing."
my perception of Tool's lyrics is that they tend to be down on people that aren't fans or in-line with Maynards line of thought. maybe that's not the best way to describe it, but i always have that feeling when i listen...good thing i like 'em
I think some people are grossly overestimating the aggression level of Tools music. While it is not all happy, I would venture to say it is no more "power chords and people screaming" than the Mars Volta (who I actually saw open for A Perfect Circle one time). Listen to Right in Two (10,000 Days) Wings for Marie/10,000 Days and I think you can get a good idea of what to expect.
but i agree with stuckinutero "I don't want to be tripping my face off listening to extremely aggressive music.
couldn't have said it better myself. i like Tool very much, and am certainly excited for their set this year...but, speaking only for myself from past experience, that is not the frame of mind you will find me in during their set.
Maybe I'll throw myself to the dogs, but my back's not to the wall Maybe I'll lay some bricks for the man, but the days just aren't that long So if I settle back and chill will I see far enough to feel the angel's dream? I thought it was the Story of the World!
I think some people are grossly overestimating the aggression level of Tools music. While it is not all happy.
I'm sorry, but I am disagreeing with this statement.
Jerk-off, Bottom, Hooker with a Penis, Stinkfist, Aenima...these are not merely temper tantrums. Tool is an aggressive act and are negative in their views of society. Vicarious summarizes this quite nicely.
"Vicariously, I Live while the whole world dies You all need it too - don't lie. "
Or in Aenima
"Here in this hopeless fucking hole we call LA The only way to fix it is to flush it all away. Any fucking time. Any fucking day. Learn to swim, I'll see you down in Arizona bay. "
And as for surprises in the set...
In the last two years of them touring, they have broken out no surprise tracks, they have thrown no gems to the audience. They are not a band that stops in the middle of a set and plays something the audience is chanting. I believe they view these performances like a musical theatric performance and they seldom deviate from the script.
That's why I have this problem, I love them but I just don't know if they are going to jive with Roo. You have no idea how much I hope they do, but I just won't be able to handle yet another 90 minute sharp set with no interaction.
If they broke out a set with Third Eye, Bottom, Reflections, Eulogy...I'd be PSYCHED AS HELL, but if they do the cookie cutter thing I'm going to cry like a bitch.

You must not listen to TMV much. I'm not saying theyre not there, but you'll find yourself pressed to find a power chord on a volta record. Well, at least Omar playing one as lead. An Omar Rodriguez and Adam Jones comparison is just really far out there. Im not demeaning either of them. Theyre both brilliant at what they do, but what they both do is very different. And also, Cedric doesnt scream anymore. Maybe in ATDI he would let out some wicked sh*t, but not in TMV. He simply doesnt need to because he has a tremendous voice.
For the last time, I have listened to every single Tool album in cd quality hundreds of times. I enjoy their music. Most people here who feel the way I do have aswell.
Its not a matter of Tool as a band, its a matter of Tool playing Bonnaroo.

this is the funniest thread ever. i'm reading about everyone's "party favor" of choice for the tool show and my ribs hurt from all the laughing. karma kudos for idioteque's chocolates and stuckinutero's "tripping my face off."
oh and by the way... tripping for the tool show = not good. there's going to be a couple of nervous breakdowns during that show, i promise. there's no way i want jesus blowing his f#$@ing whistle at me while i'm riding the snake.

Well i know atleast one person lost it while the mars volta were doing their soundcheck. I think its just a persons preference. I like to partake for shows like tool and the like more so then even jam bands, though i enjoy both. Some people cant handle, but i think it depends less on the band and more on the person.

MAYNARD has great stage presence and tool puts on one hell of a lightshow. I always wait until the latenight shows to indulge but u can't go wrong indulging w/ tool
Do you think you guys can try and be a little more discreet with your references to being under the influence? The board has received a fair amount of attention as of late and we really don't need to be drawing suspicious eyes to the board -- it's in the interest of the board members and the fest itself. Thanks, everyone!

and you just returned the favor. Might be the best thing Ive read on this board in my short time.

i'm going to sum up what i think of this thread and/or topic in one shot...
i'm in the nashville area (not far from manchester.) i don't listen to radio at all on my own personal time. i research what i'm going to listen to next via the internet or friends' recommendations. however we have a radio at work that we listen to during the course of the day and one of the more popular stations is the local rock outlet who's name i will not disclose. i can handle the station in small doses of 30 - 45 minutes at a time because if i listen to it any longer than that, i am guaranteed to hear the stupid new saliva song (the one of many that has zero substance) at least twice. other bands getting a lot of play time on the station include: rhcp, kid rock, korn, disturbed (who they love a lot), stonesour, and TOOL. they play lots of TOOL.
now if you happen to like most of the previously mentioned bands, do not take offense to what i'm about to say. no matter what town you're in, you have a similar radio station and you know who the demographic is... ie ozzfest guy.
with all of this said, i like tool. do not get me wrong but i have a bad feeling that middle tennessee alone could pull in 20,000 tool fans (ie ozzfest guys) quite easily. not to be snobs but do we (the bonnaroo community) want to invite 20,000 "toolarmy" ozzfest guys?
p.s. i am in no means trying to be negative. i will be at the tool show as well as about 20 others on the weekend of bonnaroo regardless. just know that its all about the greater good that is bonnaroo.

i have seen TOOL twice and neither show was really that great. but i do like them. i find this idea that TOOL = violent fans is hilarious. i'm sure that is the same stuff that was said of Led Zeppelin fans back in the day. that fact is that the guys in the band are all about Peace and Love. and their fans just like good music like everyone else ---they just happen to appreciate some good 'ol crunchy distortion.
they are also a very pyschedelic band with alot of imagery in their music. their stage show will be extremely visual. i think that TOOL fans today would have been Pink Floyd fans in the 70's.
one more thing... i am hoping to see a massive HIPPIE MOSH PIT!! everyone will love each other as they thrash around in circles. that would be so great. YEAH!!!
