What does them being white have to do with it? And why would you call them wannabes? They are one of the most groundbreaking and prolific groups in hiphop.
They have constantly reinvented themselves and kept it fresh. Hell when they started they couldn't even play any instruments and progressively throughout their career they have gotten better and better.
Run DMC was the first group to use rock backing tracks in there rap songs instead of classic beats. And have you heard the cover of Walk This Way? The Beasties first album has a ton of rock beats as well. The song you mentioned, No Sleep Till Brooklyn.
And the fact that you call them a white wannabe rap group says to me that you think hiphop is for black people to perform only. Dont take that as me calling you a racist. Cause I am not. But it seems you may be a little closed minded when it comes to hiphop.
Boy oh boy if you only knew!!! Ha Ha. Don't be so quick to judge peoples "feelings" over a message boards.
Run DMC crossed over for ONE SONG with Aerosmith (yes i have heard it, who hasn't)
I am not say whites can not be successfull in hip hop, look at Marshall M. You are taking my comments the wrong way based on your OWN opinion of the Beastie Boys...Since you do not see them as white wannabes, then obviously, I am wrong.
I am the farthest thing from a close minded person that you will ever meet, and certainly not racist. (What would you say if I told you I was married to a colored person??)
Its got nothing to do with closed mindedness or racism, I just do not believe the Beastie Boys were ever REALLY a hip hop act, they have always been more of a gimmick to me, in a world dominated by black artists....Therefore, they are white (because they are white) wannabe rappers (because they want to be in the game, but are not very good at it). Simple as that!!

unfortunately the only time i saw them was the Field Day Festival/debacle and they were just not 'on'. I've heard nothing but good things about their live show from others so im sure it was just a bad night for them. I'd watch'em again for sure.
dmb fan check out the album "the in sound from way out" its an all instrumental album they did that is a good intro for anyone who doughts their diversity in music, it is known that the b boys will go down in rap history as one of the original hip hop groups that pushed boundaries and was always ahead of their time etc. .....that being said, i really , really hope they are NOT at bonnaroo
id like to see them becasue i grew up with them. and they could fill the more mainstream slots that have been poping up latly. maybe they could do the beck or cypress hill slot. but they couldnt headline. if they were a latenight id probably skip them for something else. i think it would be a fun show though. just seems a little out of place at roo. but so does fountains of wayne.

I've seen them twice on their tours supporting Hello Nasty and 5 Burroughs and it was awesome both times. They put on such a great show and have amazing energy considering they're old farts at this point
Ill Communication and Check Your Head are classics in my book, with Hello Nasty and Paul's Boutique not far off. License to Ill has it's old-school appeal, but I really never listen to it anymore. To the 5 Burroughs was a disappointment for me. I really like a few songs, but it's not something I go back to. That said, their tour supporting that album was one of my favorite shows ever. They really did a great job hitting all their styles - and it didn't feel disjointed at all. Great performers
i would much prefer j5 also. that 05 show was great. im hoping they are a latenight this year. theyve got the new album out. and dave is on it. im thinking they will both be at roo this year.
i enjoy their live show much more then the albums. but they are still great albums. and for me thats true for just about everyband,.

I really like the Beastie Boys. They've got a lot of great songs and I think they could fill a pre-headliner spot. If Bonnaroo really does go in another direction, and tries something different like a rap headliner, I think they would lead in really well before someone like Jay-Z (who I would LOVE to see.)
blah! beastie boys is one thing. but i dont think we need radio gangsta rap at roo. and if we do then id rather dre and snoop. at least old skool gangsta rap was decent and original.

I don't really consider Jay-Z "radio gangsta rap." He's the first rapper to play the Royal Albert Hall, plays long shows live and features a full orchestra with him. He does live music right.
someone gave me jay-z's dead and i just couldnt take it. he may be more creative then say 50 cent and im not saying he dosent have some catchy songs. but catchy dosent = good. if im forced to listen to it in a friends car id ont want to stab my ears with pencils like alot of the other new rap but id rather not listen to it. i guess its just not for me.
Yeah I think calling the Beastie Boys gimmiky isn't at all appropriate. I mean Check Your Head and Ill Communication are arguably 2 of the best Hip-Hop albums to ever see the light of day. When they put out No Sleep Till Brooklyn and You Gotta Fight.....they were in high school. They pretty much originated the rap/rock genre. You gotta give some props. I'd personally love to see em at Bonnaroo.
i love license to ill because it was one of the first tapes i ever purchased as a kid. but i think pauls boutique is their best work. its definitely my favorite.
"Paul's Boutique" is my favorite too, but I wore out (de-magnetized) a tape of "Licensed to Ill" in college from hundreds of plays on a crappy boombox.
