Just curious here but, Am I the only one who is not too familiar with Radiohead and Beck and really didnt feel the hype about either one. Its really been gettin to me and I had to put it out there. I didnt catch either show. I really dont feel that they are of the jam material that I am into. Do they Jam??
never seen either show, and i felt that by the time radiohead came around, with all the hype, i needed to catch the show. watched the first half inside, second half from our tent in camping only, they had a hell of a show. they rock, not jam. i came for moe. and phil and friends, but those 2 put on a grand show which i didnt even plan for. thats the entire weekend tho, get some suggestions, and if it doesnt conflict, get over there. it was too hot to booze at the tent hard anyways.
Radiohead is the main reason I wanted to go this year. I know it's the same way for tens of thousands of other people. The thing I love about Bonnaroo though, is that there's such a great variety for everyone. Even if you're not there to see the headliners, there's still so much more to check out. We got jam bands, indie rock, raggae, New Orleans jazz bands, country, and even a little rap. I've heard people begging to see Incubus as the headliners next year, and to be honest with you, I'll be there with bells on, but certainly NOT to see them.

I've already said in another thread that i could have fallen asleep during Radiohead... They were interesting i suppose but it was all too gloomy and somber sounding to me... I kind of went expecting to either be blown away or not so impressed at all and I definately felt the latter... Just my two cents... Where Rolling Stone got their "Best live show ever" claims puzzles me... To each his own..

I totally love Radiohead - but my wife just didn't get it. Since the first announcement that they were going to be at the roo that was my main focus and I'm sure I menitoned it a million times - every time she would look at me and shake her head, saying 'Yeah Creep was cool - but I just don't see what the big deal is.' Now to her credit every time we would discuss it on Friday and Saturday she would maintain that she was very curious to see what all the hype was about. After the show, she said she enjoyed it, would probably listen to them in the future, but still didn't get the hype. I suppose it's just in the ears, to each their own.
Lucid...I am with you man! My best friend was so hyped on Radiohead, but after 5 songs he said he was feeling sleepy (which was not condusive to our buzz) so we moved to the Troo Lounge and jammed until midnight when we moved to Dr. John. Had a blast
I'm with Lucid and machub...I appreciate that tons of people loved the Radiohead set, but I couldn't get into it. I actually got a pretty nice nap in. The friend I went with loves Radiohead but couldn't get into the show either. I think after a long day in the sun, smoking, and getting little sleep, it was a little too mellow and somber for us.
Even though there weren't other shows playing against Radiohead there was still a lot in Centeroo to see. It probably was a good time to go explore since I'm assuming most people were at the show.
here is my whole take on the Radiohead deal....if you came to see radiohead because you were looking to dance around a high energy show you came to the wrong show...Radiohead is by no means a jam band...they are expiramental rock..and what they do on stage is not what I even consider a concert..its more of an expieriance. They take you to another place with their shows, (if you let them) Those slow, gloomy songs that you all dislike so much are a very important part of their show, not only important but necessary!
Anyone who doesn't understand what they are about, perhaps you should try eating some psychadelic treats and sit in a dark room and listen to "Kid A" because that is all it took for me to realize that they are one of the greatest bands ever (in fact it really only took the 1st three tracks on Kid A for me to come to that conclusion)
That said I love Phish and all the other jam bands out their they are great to get out and dance around to, but what bands like Radiohead, Sigur Ros, Pink Floyd, and Tool (just to name a few) is take you to another level of conciousness and create if only for a few hours a beatiful moment in time. Just my opinion

the thing about radiohead is..for every one of you guys that "didnt really get it"..there were probably 5 people who were completely blown away and became fans for life (including 2 people who i went with.)
they do get ALOT of hype, and sometimes i wish that wasnt the case, because i feel like that makes people want to find a reason not to like it. But at least they are trying to do new things and arent afraid to fail. Plus they are saying something politically, which, unfortunately is not as common as it should be. especially in the current state of things in this country.
the problem with them playing at roo, is that some of the set (arpeggi, videotape, house of cards, how to dissapear, etc...) was on the mellow side; and with a lot of people who have never seen/heard them, and are used to raging jambands for 2 hours and dancing- it probably came across as boring. its hard to have an intimate, thought provoking show (which is what they do) with 80,000 people. i think if any of the detracters saw them in a smaller venue, they would have a different view. but, to each his own.
I just couldn't get into it because of other factors that made the day long, I don't dislike any of their music. And I don't think someone needs to eat psychodelic treats and sit in a dark room to get it either, although I'm sure that adds to experience as it has to mine with other bands. I love Sigur Ros and Pink Floyd, I guess I just missed the boat on Radiohead. I agree with ronburgandy that perhaps I may have gotten more out of Radio if I had seen them in a smaller, more intimate venue. If you give me a bowl and a blanket to lay down on with some nice mellow music I'm sure to pass out!
From what I've read here and on other boards I think that people who weren't into Radiohead before 'roo just had their expectations built to high. I know this board is full of Radiohead fans just from discussions before 'roo. I wasn't there but I know what sort of expectations I have for a Radiohead show just from hanging out here. It kinda makes sense when you read how most people's favorite shows usually comes from someone they had never heard of. Going in with no expectatioins. Just my thoughts.

So you didn't catch either show -- maybe you should have at least saw it before making your judgements. Even if some left underwhelmed, at least some of the folks around here tried to broaden their horizons a little and give something new a shot. I know I wouldn't have come to appreciate any of the "JAM" stuff you're so into if I hadn't given it a shot.

Now I can sit here and take your incessant Radiohead bashing, but now that you're rating strawberry jam over grape jelly I'm going to have to take the gloves off. Anybody who would take those disgusting little seed thingys over the smooth......ummm, grapeness of grape jelly doesn't know what the hell they're talking about. You ma'am have completely flipped your wig.

haha! The original factor that sold me on strawberry jam is its spreadability. Globby grape jelly doesn't do it for me, I like it nice and smooooooth. I've never been much of a grape fan anyway.

Sure, jam is very spreadable right away, but there's something to be said for working that grape jelly back and forth, back and forth, until you find that perfect consistency.
But, if you don't like grape off the bat then I guess you're coming at this with a personal bias. Typical with Radiohead bashers.
There is a rewarding feeling for getting the grape jelly to spread evenly on the bread since you have to work for it, I'll admit that. But there's something about strawberries that's more appealing. Can it be the sweet smell? The lovely red color? We'll never know.
I believe there is an anti- Radiohead/Grape Jelly group, I should definitely look into that...

I don't know how id describe their set, but to me it was just about the opposite of gloomy and somber. I came in kinda unsure, more keen to the 'jam' side of things, but they totally melted my face. maybe i was just in the right 'state of mind' but i wasnt to far out there. Like I think someone else said somewhere, it was like watching a master work of art be painted right before your eyes. The radiohead set was honestly the first show that I've been to in about 2 years and 3 days where i havent thought to myself "ya this is sweet, but its no phish." they like elevated me into a new state of mind. before the set i was barely able to walk around my feet were so blistered and after the set (though there might have been other factors)i was fucking walking on fricken air. I can understand how people say it was boring and stuff, but at that set i definitly "got it." and then after that I go to camp and come back only to find out trey and mike are in the superjam, like holy shit. But thats just my opinion. Roo definitly wasnt the same this year but to me seeing radiohead totally made up for it.
