I usually just do a quick dry shave of my legs and underarms at camp once or twice. I'm not gonna worry about every last hair or about a little stubble, but I'm like you - I just can't go that long without shaving my armpits and still be comfortable wearing sleeveless dresses! It's like, I know nobody else will care or probably even notice, but to me it's worth it to do a quick shave so I'M not worrying about it and feeling self conscious about putting my arms in the air at a show or something.
I also tend to use Veet beforehand in hopes that it might last a little longer than shaving and/or result in tapered ends for the hairs that will be less noticeable as they grow in.
I wouldn't be weirded out at all if someone was shaving at the troughs. Although like I said I just shave dry, it's not great but it works well enough for a quick shave. Or you could always just bring a bucket of water from the troughs back to camp and shave there if you wanted a bit more privacy.
I don't grow hair very fast, so I'm just saying screw it. If I or my fiancé don't care then nobody else should either. I'm lucky though... My pits barely grow hair at all, and if I wear boots it covers my shins which is about the only place that has colored hair... The rest is just a super fine glistening of hair. Ha! Sometimes when I've had to shave dry I'll use a wet wash cloth and it prevents any major razor burn.
I wax my legs before Roo. If you're not used to waxing I suggest doing it 2 or 3 days before. If waxing ends up irritating your legs you have a couple of days for it to get better. The heat, sun, sweat and dirt wouldn't be fun on irritated skin! I shower every night at Roo, so for the pits I lather up and just run a razor over them before I rinse.

I actually waxed my underams the Tuesday before Roo with a Bliss waxing kit they sell at Sephora. I'll either do that again, or go to a salon for it this year. As for my legs, I just did a quick shave at camp with some baby wipes and my normal razor. Not the greatest trick, but it did a decent enough job for me.
PS- did you guys know that Free People's blog, Bldg 25 has a DIY section? They have a bunch of cute stuff to make! Today's post is about how to make cute floral headpieces!
On the shaving issues, I'm a guy and used to shave my legs so my hair was pretty thick but a few years ago I found a great alternative. First let your hair grow out for a couple of weeks, then take a cigerrette lighter and burn the hairs off carefully, maybe even with someones help. It will stink but a good wipe down and some lotion afterwards and I was good for at least a week or more. The more I did this the less and longer it took for the hair to grow back. And when it did grow back it kept getting thinner every time. So think about it but be carefull if you try it. And hope that helps anyone out.

Hahaha! I'll pass.. No way I'm trying that. Scary.

I think I'd call this method the "Hillbilly No!-No!". Cheaper than the $189 you'd pay for the real thing, but I'm thinking there may be some drawback I'm not seeing, hmmmm....
Raincoats?? We've talked about rainboots but what about raincoats? I was thinking about stashing a dollar poncho in my bag because it's small, easy to carry, cheap and it would cover any bag/camera/phone etc. I don't want to get wet... But they can get HOT. Any suggestions? I don't have a raincoat other than a thick, hot, icky safety approved poncho I used on contraction sites.
My sister got us some ponchos at Bed Bath and Beyond of all places. It's like a cheapy dollar poncho but out of a higher quality fabric that doesn't stick to you when wet - sort of like tent fabric. We have bright candy pink ponchos and they come in their own storage bag. Makes a great groundcloth & doesn't take a ton of space in a bag.
I also have a packable rain jacket from REI that I take to Roo but have never used because the poncho covers more, isn't as hot and can double as a groundcover. But if it was uber rainy it would be nice to have both so I figure... might as well be prepared! ;D
back to shaving - I usually skip my legs, but will shave my underarms once or twice. I'll break out the shaving gel & razor at the troughs. I've always felt that everyone keeps their eyes to themselves in there (or at least that's what I like to believe), especially when it's crowded, so you can just do your thing.
It's all about doing whatever to make yourself as comfortable as possible. If that's shaving, do it.

This! Once you're there, no one gives a hoot if you get all furry or take your time to remove every hair from the root. In the morning it's too hot to sleep and there's time to do things like this and no one even notices.
Hi ladies! I've been lurking these boards ever since I bought my ticket, and finally registered when I thought of a question without an answer so far!
So, I've done all the reading about clothes, showers, what to pack, etc... but what about shaving? Not sure if it's been discussed here. I tried to search, but it broke trying to browse 200 pages
How do you solve the shaving issue at roo? Do you wax beforehand? Bring disposable razors with the gel built in? Say "forget it, people can deal"? Right now my plan is to bring Venus Breeze disposables, but is it weird to shave your legs or something while at the water troughs? I can go a day or two without worry about my legs, but my underarms are a must (damn my genetics!)
I think this has been addressed in the showering / hygeine post somewhere..... I am lucky to have really slow and light hair growth so I shave the morning of, and then don't worry about it.... I think that is because I have waxed a few times and it seems to make hair growth much less. My friend just dry shaved at camp.
I bring a razor every year... and have yet to use it. I mean if people are going to be bothered by a little stubble on my legs or under my arms, I will lecture them about all the bad things in the world It's my vacation, and I'll be stubbly if I want to be.
I bought four of the cheapy disposable ponchos.. They are two for a dollar at the Dollar Tree. I saw some poncho that are probably similar to the ones you are describing from Bed Bath and Beyond at Walmart the other day with the umbrellas for $4 or so. I almost bought one, but I didn't want to spend anymore since I had just bought two absolutely perfect Roo dresses for $9 each as Ross. They are triangle spaghetti strap breathable cotton with padding in the cup by "She's So Cool". I wanted to get all three patterns they had, but one of the colors made me look ghostly pale and sickly, so it was a no go. I also got a great pink boho-ish backpack at walmart for $5 that same day. I think I'm skipping the purse this year because I'm bringing my nice camera and it's heavy enough to need to carry it around in a backpack when I'm not shooting.

Every year that I've been to Roo, at around 8 am the water troughs are lined with ladies with their legs propped up and shaving away. I've never felt strange shaving my legs at the troughs, and it's even a great way to make some friends! However, I did develop a pretty bad rash in '09 (either from the water or from not moisturizing enough? I'm not sure but damn my super sensitive skin) so I might try to just skip the leg shaving this year. We'll see!
For what it's worth on the shaving thing.. I can't remember noticing anyone with hairy parts... And I'm sure there were plenty... I doubt anyone really cares or notices, so if you tend to break out from it I wouldn't even bother. But like me and my travel flat iron, I totally get someone doing something because it just makes them feel better.

Hello ladies. Long time lurker of this thread, just wanted to say thanks for all the info and great ideas. Also in regards to shaving. I shave everyday, I can't help it, I hate the feel of a stubbly leg. I also have super sensitive skin, so pretty much anything irritates it. So after a lot experimenting with different things, I now use baby oil. Which is perfect for Roo shaving. I just get a small bucket of water, sit at my camp, apply baby oil, shave, wipe legs, and apply lotion. I've never experienced any irritation. Hope this helps someone
Anyone have a favorite length bike short? I'm trying to find a shorter pair but not too short. I think mine last year were 11 inches (seems to be standard) and they peak out from a hemline or two I want to wear.. So I saw 7 inch inseams on walmart's page and was wondering if anyone knows where they hit... I've also seen 3 in ones and I'm thinking the 3 inch would be too short to help that much with chafing but that the 7 in would work fine.
3in would almost definitely ride up and not help with chaffing at all. 7 in would probably be good. I don't know how long mine are, but they were originally the really longs ones, and I cut them off and re-hemmed them just past the chubby-rubby part of my legs
I bought 2 pair of the Danskin bike shorts at Wal-Mart for $7 each, and they work great. I've worn them several times & they don't show with the skirts or dresses I have worn. I will probably pick up a couple of more pairs.
I was at Walmart last night and happened to notice that they've got a few dresses that look like they'd be good for Roo. Most notably, they had one with a built in bra (not just a shelf bra or padded cups but an actual underwire bra). And another one where the bodice was that super-gathered, super-stretchy kinda deal - I can't think of what to call it so hopefully you guys know what I mean. I think maybe the word I'm looking for is a shirred bodice. Like those tube dresses we all got from Walmart two years ago! Except that this one was a tank-style top, which I thought was cool. You wouldn't have to worry about it falling down like with a tube dress, but the shirred top might make it possible to go braless, at least for some people.
You guys know what to expect from Walmart dresses - not the best quality, but pretty perfect for Roo since you can get cheap things you don't have to worry about. I think these ones were $12 a pop. The one with the built in bra looked maybe a little on the cheap side - just because it was pretty basic so it looked a bit like a bra sewed to a skirt, y'know? But it was still pretty cute, and I didn't try it on so who knows, maybe it would look better on a body.
Anyway, just a heads up in case anyone wants more Roo-dresses! I was pretty tempted - the boyfriend wanted to buy me one and I wouldn't let him but I don't know, I may have to rethink that decision later!

I use my old cheerleading and volleyball spandex. We had them custom made by a local seamstress, and are made of a really interesting material that is super stretchy but feels like cotton. The inseam is 5" and it seems to work perfectly.
oh ladies. I am so ready for roo. I was also at walmart picking up some random stuff, and noticed their cheap triangle and/or halter bikini tops. only $8! Since I generally wear a) boyshort undies or b) bathing suit bottoms and then a bikini top and a dress over all of it - I thought - hey, an $8 bikini top is a great deal.
Also - for you Roo Vets out there - much as i WANT to buy a couple new dresses, i HAVE a ton. More than i need for the 4 days of roo. SO - now its like - how can i vamp up my old dresses? NEW BOOB ACCESSORIES! (i.e. new bikini tops Hey, know your strengths.

I wouldn't mind picking up a new bikini top or two as well - especially since the hook on the back of one of mine BROKE on me in Florida! And of course it broke ON THE BEACH, it couldn't just break when I put it on before we left for the beach or anything. So my awesome boyfriend got stuck with the job of walking back to the car to search for ways to MacGyver the thing back together while I tried desperately not to flash the entire beach.
Uh, anyway...I would enjoy finding a new bikini top. The plastic thingie we used to fix the other one is actually not half bad so it is still wearable, but still.
Edit: Grrr, why am I always the first post on a new page?!

Hi again ladies, I was just at Target and noticed they had some cute new dresses in. Or at least, new since whenever I was last there. They had a bunch of solid-color dresses in really soft jersey fabric that looked very cute - and they had pockets! I am such a sucker for dresses with pockets. And they had some other cute dresses too, might be worth checking out if anyone still needs more Roo-dresses.
Also I can't resist mentioning that I just bought a super cute bra and it happens to be a B-cup...I haven't actually tried it on yet to see if it fits but I think it might and I am super excited about this. Thank you, birth control pills!
Hope this link works... Took a photo of my main 4 Roo dresses this year and uploaded them with my phone... All were $9 each at Ross and 3 of the 4 have padding in the cup so I can go braless.. And I love greens and blues if you notice a pattern.
