Random thoughts...
I actually think MJ and Lebron could be my #1 and #2. Something about basketball as a sport highlights individual greatness but still within the context of a team where you need to lift others around you. The exact balance there is unique.
In some ways what Brady did is the hardest thing ever because you have to get so many other variables going in your direction, but there are SO many other variables that it makes you wonder how much of it was due to Tom Brady's greatness.
But then on the other end, individual sports are like "yep, Usain Bolt is the fastest, so he ran the fastest and beat the others." "Serena was the best, so she beat her opponents."
Whereas Michael and LeBron consistently overcame so many different obstacles, evolved with their age, etc.. It isn't enough for them to be the best player in the league to win. They have to achieve a lot more than just becoming the best. And it is conceivable that one sport could have the 2 best all-time athletes in it. Their eras didn't overlap. They both thoroughly dominated the league and importantly they dominated it in different ways. Jordan reached a career prime that LeBron never did and had an all time Disney career down to the ending. And LeBron is showing a level of athletic longevity that we've never seen before. Both are nearly unbelievable to me, and they just happen to have occurred in the same sport.
There is an argument to say Usain Bolt is the most impressive ever. I also find it interesting that he's in the only sport remaining where you don't have to react and respond to opponents. As Kenny Powers once said, he's the best at exercising. It is a lower form of sport in my opinion.
I'm voting Ali for now. There are some arguments for Floyd. I don't really like boxing as a sport compared to MMA which is much more interesting and more complex. He's from an older era. Ticks a lot of boxes.

I don't watch hockey, but it does seem like they would be similar in that way.
Messi/MJ/Lebron def have the bigger impacts compared to the other team sport people

billions more people caring about/playing a sport seems like a good reason to hold those athletes careers in a higher regard.

I feel like Canada is one of the few/only countries where the best athletes go into hockey. IIRC even in Russia it's soccer that's more popular than hockey.

A bit of a different take on this would be considering the entire population of amateur athletes who pursue dreams of playing basketball or football at a higher level. The youth participation of those sports in the US is absolutely massive compared to the youth participation of hockey.

Theres no way to have evidence, but im sure Im correct. Mainly Because they are way more athletic humans. They could absolutely learn to skate if starting from childhood.

A bit of a different take on this would be considering the entire population of amateur athletes who pursue dreams of playing basketball or football at a higher level. The youth participation of those sports in the US is absolutely massive compared to the youth participation of hockey.
Also poor kids in south florida are playing with a passion to drag their family tree out of poverty where as hockey players would just prefer to play hockey instead of selling advertising.
A more meaty discussion would be why the US is so bad at soccer considering that we do actually get good youth participation numbers.
What ive seen many times is that kids here opt out and move over to different sports because the NBA, NFL, and MLB just carry more currency here than international soccer. But it's always been an interesting dynamic.

Soccer is something you put your kids in and pay no attention. No one takes it seriously .All the kids want to do is run around. I played one year when I was 8 and had no idea what was happening. I knew enough about football and baseball already to at least know what to do.

we lose all of our best and most desperate athletes to football and basketball is how ive always looked at it.
I imagine a lot of youth soccer in america is closer to daycare than it is “this is my only ticket in life.”
