strongly considering this. how fast do tix sell? also open to areas to stay in. never been to Cali
It has not sold out in the past, however even though the last two lineups fucked, this one is massive in comparison, especially in a region with a lot of well paid people in their 30s and 40s who live for this type of music.
The best place to stay in I think is Mission Bay (essentially the hotels between Oracle and Chase Center). It is not a classic SF neighborhood by any means and feels like it could be anywhere, but is flat, clean, safe, sunny and a 40 minute walk +/- to the venue if Ubers and public transit is a shitshow, and there are plenty of decent hotels. If you haven't been to Cali, you can always Uber to the more classic hoods in the morning to sight see and then head to the venue.

appreciate it. i found a bunch of affordable hotels with pay later options between 5-600 for 3 nights all about 15 mins away all in that area. im not one for sights so not a big deal to me being in an off beat type area. ill prob like that more.

It's more that it's a super sanitized hood (although given the state of the city that can be a plus). That area pretty much is luxury apartments for boring people, hospitals, UCSF students, and bars that cater to people going to Giants and Warriors games, so there isn't all that much that is cool to do. Like I mentioned to somebody else in here, the neighborhood in between Mission Bay and Pier 80 is called the Dogpatch and that definitely has some cool spots - a ton of great bars, just Yelp em, and some good spots to grab a casual lunch before the fest since the food is pretty meh inside (Long Bridge Pizza, The Ramp is an institution even if the food is fine, Piccino is good for brunch).
well it sounds like it didn't really sell out, but it's their 3rd year and this is a pretty big lineup and they've been building their brand so it could sell out this time. Who knows. But according to Reddit it's usually not a problem to get a ticket later if you really decide you want to go.
I just booked a pay-later room on Booking.com at the Hyatt Regency SOMA. With all the fees a double queen room is $725 for 3 nights. A lot of the other hotels only have single king/queen or 2 double beds which isn't really ideal. I didn't really see any reasonable Airbnbs in the area with more than 1 bed, though there were a couple pretty nice ones in Dolores Heights (30 min tram + walk) and it looks like a pretty good residential neighborhood w/ restaurants and stuff.
Dolores Heights is a great area. You'll be in-between a few cool neighborhoods. I lived pretty close to it in the Castro when I attended Portola in 2022. We took a rideshare in and walked 15 minutes towards home before hailing one back each night - pretty easy.
Did they improve the logistics of this last year, specifically the warehouse? Charli gays storming the stage in 2022 was iconic but the setup was kinda stupid to be talking about expanding capacity.

They flipped the layout of the warehouse, and the backside (where the stage was in 2022) was fully open. You still had to walk through gates to get in like the Yuma but I don't remember having to wait in an actual line besides maybe Chris Lake b2b Armand Van Helden which was pretty packed. Nothing like 2022 though, that was a cluster fuck.

Warehouse was totally fixed getting in, at least based on what I heard and my experience. Swapping the orientation was all they needed to do.

Could stay at a cheap hotel near the airport too. Take the bart close to the venue then walk back. Had no problem doing that last year.

Yeah you enter on the other side of the warehouse now and there was basically never a line to get in (only time I noticed it was for Barry Can’t Swim)
How did they increase capacity? It’s not like they could expand space on a pier.
Given how much empty concrete space there was in the middle of the pier, I'm assuming they had the potential to go that high but didn't the first two years for whatever reason. That figure comes from a presentation Portola made to the San Francisco Entertainment Commission, which you can see the rest of here. (most fascinating stat IMO is that 90% of attendees are local.)
Curious to see everyone’s top 10 for this festival. ‘Twas a challenge to try and get it down to 10.
1. Soulwax 2. Justice 3. Jessie Ware 4. Four Tet 5. Barry Can’t Swim (live) 6. Boys Noize B2B VTSS 7. Deltron 3030 8. Floating Points 9. Glass Beams 10. Busy P B2B Braxe + Falcon
1. Justice
2. Jersey - Love their EP and want to see it live. I hope their set is short if they are just going to play their own music, unless we get new stuff.
3. Rufus Du Sol - One of my favorite groups playing at my favorite city, I am really excited for them.
4. Deltron 3030 - Been a Deltron fan for a while. Not someone I expected to see. Very hype.
5. Soulwax - Love their remixes, but apparently they don't do that?
6. Four Tet - Never caught a solo set and think it could be spiritual.
7. Gesaffelstein -Totally dependent on stage, I don't care to see him at Pier. Won't be in Ship Tent. Crane is expected and if the rumored change back to a tent is true, I am down. OR Dan, you put him in the warehouse for a real crazy move.
8. Floating Points - Hadn't listened before but woah
9. DJ Pee.Wee - Caught him at the Heineken House last year and it was sickkk. He sings live and played the drums!
10. Fisher - Todd Terge dropped Take It Off last year and I have been thinking about it ever since.
I looked at the other ones and realized I am forgetting some I would probably place higher. Busy P b2b Brexe + Falcon, Barry Can't Swim (fav Coachella set, this won't touch that imo), Bicep, LP Giobbi, Boyz Noize. Jesus there is a lot of good stuff on this lineup.
1. Justice 2. Busy P b2b Braxe + Falcon (can you guys tell I listened to a lot of blog house in high school or what.) 3. Soulwax 4. Jessie Ware 5. Four Tet 6. horsegiirL 7. Fcukers 8. Jersey 9. DJ Heartstring 10. Deltron 3030
If Crane is really back to a covered tent (which rocks because tents are always better than stages unless it's the main stage) then I honestly think the only option left is for it to go Rufus playing for 1.5 hours during sunset since they are the big font "headliner" and will get the longest set, and Gesa closing for an hour on Pier. Gesa does not work when it's light out and won't work in any of the other three venues. Tycho --> Rufus --> Gesa, with one of Jamie xx/Soulwax on Crane between Rufus and Gesa like Jai Paul, one closing Crane against Gesa, Four Tet and Bicep in the Warehouse? Or, if Warehouse can't accommodate Chroma visuals, maybe it's Bicep on Crane and Jamie xx gets put back in the Warehouse?
This or CRSSD? Looks like both will have Gesaffelstein, Soulwax, and Disclosure.
The CRSSD lineup looks like it will be really great, it's just going to get overshadowed by Portola because Portola has all their top names but also Rufus, Barry Can't Swim, Jamie xx, Four Tet, etc. If I'm comparing directly, the only thing CRSSD has that I would kill to have at Portola is Confidence Man, and there are several names I'd kill to have at CRSSD from Portola if I was attending that.
