I say it a couple of times a year and I’ll say it again. I really regret not going in 2016. After a 7 year run I had decided I needed a break. Then the lineup dropped and I loved it. But I foolishly was like “I’m sticking to my word” What a dumb dumb.
i mean it was bonnaroo so i had a good time. much was made about people enjoying the smaller crowds but honestly to me it was a bit of a bummer. a big part of bonnaroo for me is the bigness, i know crowds bring all kinds of logistical issues but bigger crowds bring bigger energy (unironically). all three headliners were killer, Tame Impala late night was great, but other than a few bright spots that undercard was atrocious. it was the only bonnaroo i've attended where i had large swathes of time where i sat around doing nothing. no band i was interested in seeing.
the late night options were also generally awful, including the worst bonnaroo superjam of all time:
first couple of songs were mildly interesting, then Allen Stone came out for an excruciatingly lengthy rendition of "The Thrill Is Gone". That performance will go down as my second worst Bonnaroo memory ever, beaten only by the time in 2004 when my car got stuck in the mud in the pouring down rain while trying to leave Sunday night.
then when the guy from Third Eye Blind came out and did Ring of Fire. OK I shit you not, when i was in college we took a roadtrip to see our friend in Savannah. Day drank Jim Beam for several hours then we went to this karaoke bar and I did double jagermeister shots all night long. I was like some kind of miracle alcoholic android that night, the bartenders would all gather around every time I would order a budweiser and a double jagermeister shot and watch me take the shot down. later that night me and my comrades walked some crying stranger girl we found in the street back to her hotel, and then the hotel people didn't take to kindly to us so we stole this big pewter bowl of candy they had and ran away, then we threw the pewter bowl at some building and set off an alarm so we ran away from there too, ended up getting a room at the Thunderbird Inn because I was "tired of sleeping on the floor at fucking so-and-so's house this is bullshit i'm sleeping in a fucking bed", but when we checked into the inn at like 5am we just started screaming and throwing mattresses around before passing out, and I know we passed out but I also know there was a pounding at the door and we got kicked out. i don't remember exactly the order of events at the Thunderbird Inn.
backing up at that karaoke bar after the double jager shots I did "Ring of Fire" and straight killed that shit. Dude from Third Eye Blind was awful.
i left after that. maybe after i left justin timberlake came out and did "Dick In A Box" and I would hate to have missed that, but the first hour of the Superjam did not convince me to stick around.
all that to say i wouldn't feel too bad about missing it.

Yeah I felt the same way about the smaller crowd in 2022. Definitely felt less epic. The 2016 was just right up my alley. Far more interesting than 2017 or 2018 to me.
I still hold that 2016 not selling well wasn't really the fault of the lineup. I think there was just a weird combination of economic factors and festival oversaturation in general that year.
idk man 2 of the subs were Macklemore and Ellie Goulding
1/16: L'Impératrice 1/30: Jamie xx 2/1: DJ Seinfeld 2/7: Mild Minds* 3/1: Father John Misty* 3/4: knock2 3/7: Inhaler* 3/19: Confidence Man 3/23: DARKSIDE 5/8: Rüfüs Du Sol

Do yall think roo will ever release the lineup before tickets go on sale?
Coachella did it this year, Electric Forest doing it as well. It seems like festivals are moving towards lineups releasing before general ticket sales.

Same! 2016 was fucked for me. That was perfect headliners for me, so it makes sense it was the worst selling year lol

to your point about the bigness of crowds, i will always have the vivid memory after paul mccartney in 2013 of crossing the “which ditch” pooled up with mud and water by tightrope walking across a couple of downed barricades. thousands and thousands of people that could only get to centeroo from the what field through a barricade bottleneck. the only crowd i remember feeling bigger than paul’s was chance the rapper in 2017 which is hilarious to think back on.
and yeah 2016 superjam sucked ass. i was front and center sadly. how could you fuck up a superjam hosted by kamasi. someone i always go to bonnaroo with recently said the superjam is always good and i was like that’s not true and i asked him to name what he liked from the 2016 superjam and he couldn’t think of anything lol. chicano batman doing theme from shaft was cool and miguel doing sexyback was neat but neither were worth watching the entire thing over. ring of fire being so bad was the reason to watch it
I went in 18 19 and 22. The forest really is a dope place. There is so much to do that doesn’t involve the music which is nice to go and just explore at times. The lineup the last few years plus with how expensive it is now has turned me away. Plus I lost my loyalty with Covid so it’s almost impossible to get a ticket. Definitely recommend to anyone who hasn’t been before

Sells out every time right?
It wouldn’t surprise me if it sells out today
Today just might be loyalty but yeah it usually sells out pretty quick
Listened to GUTS last night and I don’t think I would be mad at an ORod headlining set. Pop punk is the best way to describe it?
Love the tunes but always cringe at people describing it as pop-punk. The songs don’t really have that crunch/muscle, even her interpolation of Misery Business sounds a bit hollow.
Her songs are great but they’re firmly power-pop, or in the same vein as Avril.

o rod is certainly pop punk and 90s alt inspired. she’s actually a huge jack white fan and said he’s a big inspiration and i can definitely tell on the guitar parts. there’s a nice letter that he wrote to her that she has talked about. guts and sour are both very good from start to finish. more artists that have her level of fame should be making albums that are 40 minutes or less with every song worth putting on the record. the bonus tracks to guts are also good.
last year i told my wife that as much as we like her it’s be way more fun to watch her at bonnaroo with other adults than at one of her arena shows where the ticket is expensive and i would just be surrounded by girls. but i can’t go this year so i’m actively rooting against her or lana being there because i would be pissed
