As someone who has enjoyed what I've heard but don't really know their (long) discography well - how does one prepare properly for a King Gizzard live set? Do they focus on some albums or do they just go wild and play tons of random songs? What should I try focusing on most for my homework?

Not an expert but have def been diving into them over the past few years. I’d def start new album first. Then maybe find a couple playlists or find a couple albums that you vibe with the sound. I like the microtonal stuff so Flying Microtonal banana , KG, and LW. Infest the rats nest is fire. It looks like most set lists are tops 3/4 songs off a single album and most 1/2 songs per albums played and us half 5-6 albums played depending set length. It doesn’t look like they’ve played much off of Butterfly 3000 or Poly. You could always check out the setlist.fm and see some of the songs they are playing make a playlist. I bet we get one big jam either; Digging Tap , Rattlesnake , or Head On/Pill.
recently they've been doing pretty heavy sets, but I could see them doing something more for a classic roo crowd. seems like the mega rattlesnake was a fun thing to do for Coachella specifically so I could see them doing something a long those lines, but it would be a shame to not get dripping tap

What do you mean when you say they have been playing pretty heavy sets?
And explain the Coachella set thing if you don't mind?
Truly clueless besides some background listening so far but have wanted to see them live

more from the metal album (rats nest) and the heavier stuff from the new album (Gaia, Dripping Tap), they've been peppering in stuff from older albums but it seems like the Rats Nest stuff has been getting more play than the KGLW double and Butterfly 3k that's more chill
they played a 20.minute version of Rattlesnake at coach wk1 which is normally an 8 minute song
but idk they seem like the kind of band that adjusts the setlist by reading the crowd so I could see them not going as heavy at roo if they think it's a jam fest that went pop, but they could find out metalroo used to be a thing and try to bring that back

Thanks everyone, this all helps. Still open to other suggestions or any background info. Looking into previous threads abotu them, too but figured I'd check here for the current stuff since I know they release an album every two weeks it seems.

the did an AMA on reddit a couple weeks ago. this was their response when asked about setlists:
for the last few years... I'll go thru past setlists and see what we played last time in that particular city. then I'll try to not repeats many (or any) of those songs. If we're doing multiple nights in the same city i try not to repeat any songs at all. I try to keep it fluid and a little random. I want all the gizzards and myself to feel like we're on our toes and thinking a lot with the set. Sometimes they're written as much as a week before hand if we need to do a bunch of practice. other times they're written a couple hours before the show. theres no real set system -stu
