Even given the proximity in dates and distance? It would seriously hurt all 3 festivals if their headliners were all the same, and it would also be unprecedented.

its not unheard of for acts of that caliber whoring out. OutKast did the same thing granted it was just them. Its lazy as hell but like i said it feels likely

Eh I'd argue we're already in a dark era by most peoples standards. Granted this is all subjective and I'm personally loving a few of the released lineups (Bonnaroo and Gov Ball are improvements from 2017 IMO).
If anything, the recycled headliners mean each festival's distinct differentiator won't be the headliners they book. People will choose based on proximity, vibe (city vs camping etc), and undercard. So far Undercard is king in 2018 and I couldn't be happier.

Yeah but festival undercards are slipping as well, which makes the generic headliners even worse. I remember looking at bonnaroo 5 years ago and thinking there'd be a ton of tough conflicts to choose between. Now I'm lucky if I can find a lineup with more than a dozen bands I'm interested in that I have yet to see.

thats the worst part of these undercards, even the few i like are filled with mostly bands ive seen and fairly recently. A few of them are acts ill see anytime but hard to justify a trip anywhere for that.
A drawback of going to festivals every year and concerts year round is lessening the pool of potential artists on lineups you know you like but haven't seen yet.
