Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
I will say that of the 3 that went to Roo with me, and the 11 others that went to Wayhome, 0 of them previously knew of LCD. There was a shimmer of hope when I was shuffling through some songs for them and North American Scum came on and I got a "Oh shit, that's the song from Step Brothers!". But it unfortunately didn't really go much further than that. A few of them have since been dabbling here and there with a few songs, but they didn't really take to anyone in either group. Sometimes I wonder if I need new friends..
I honestly think it was the wonky looking top 2 lines of last year that caused such a massive bed-shitting. Each of your 3 headliners have a pretty dedicated fan base sure, but it wasn't like they were overly exclusive? All 3 have tons of dates spring-fall. Even line 2, as popular as those artists are with the college kids, don't really require a trip to Bonnaroo to see them.
Ding ding ding! Ran into the same problem with my friends. Of the 4 of us that went last year I was the only one who knew of LCD. Just talking to people in the campgrounds no one seemed excited to see them or had heard of them. Their loss, it was a fantastic show.
Pretty ok with the lack of reggae this year and last tbh
Insert whatever dime-a-dozen genre you want there, then. Put on some deep or ambient house, or some indie folk, or some bluegrass. There's no reason not to have a million options at Bonnaroo. Okeechobee can fund nearly 24 hours of music for 4 days straight, including Thursday and Sunday, with 1/3(?) the attendance
Which is exactly why I'm going to Okechobee next year not Bonnaroo. I had plenty music to choose from at all hours And never felt bored.
Pearl Jam - Dead & Co. - LCD Soundsystem J. Cole - Ellie Goulding - Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
There's your answer. Very few people who listen to the top three also listen the bottom three. If they want to sell tickets, either make your entire lineup for the college kids, or go back lineups like 2012-14. Pretty much every middle aged man traveling for U2 this year will have zero options the rest of the weekend (sans RHCP).
I like this answer. Even with the scattered top two lines, they would have sold more tickets if they had just streamlined similar acts to the bottom.
Eh, I could've made it work but LCD was probably my 2nd favorite on the bill at the time (Tame Impala was first but i'd swap em now), but realistically LCD didn't and still doesn't command a top 3 booking spot. If you rely on headliners to draw people to your fest and hardly anyone knows the 3rd name then that won't be good for sales.

Exactly.
If you ask college students who LCD is, youd be hard pressed to find many who know.
If you find one who does, and you ask "would you be willing to drop $400+ to camp for 4 days in the middle of nowhere Tenn to see a festival headlined by them, Pearl Jam, and John Mayer playing with some members of The Dead" I think most would look at you like you are insane.
On the flip, head to any campus everyone knows and a lot of people would be down if you said it was a fest topped by Radiohead, RHCP, and Phish or Macca, Mumford, and Petty.

It's interesting that they were in your top two acts and you still didn't attend. I'd bet that was the case for plenty of people. I love LCD and Tame, but those two names alone simply wouldn't have gotten me there. You could have substituted LCD for Macca and I still would have skipped.
Can both things be true? I think the headliners last year weren't appealing enough, but I also don't think the undercard was that great. I think this years headliners are more appealing, but the undercard still sucks. Looks like they'll sell more tickets but still not reach a level like 2015 which was a pretty good mix of appealing headliners with a diverse and deep undercard.
Man, 2015 was a tough grouping. It wasn't as deep as 10-14, but it hadn't gone through the overhaul in went trough in 2016. It seemed more regulars were there that year. I think attendance this year will make things more clear.

This can be true, as well as the fact that we have a saturated marketplace, it was an uninventive roll out with no one that exciting posted. The actual shows were solid as hell; I have zero complaints about going - except that the late night dj's have turned into a shit ball after so many years of me being able to feel chewy without feeling cheesy as fuck. It's also true that the price increase; LiveNation's annoying promotional scheming, changing rules that weren't well laid out well, and most importantly the INCREASE IN PRICE in relation to all the other festivals coming out each year. It was an impossible task for them to get back to 75,000 in my view. But they need to start buckling up to 60,000 soon with quality undercard decisions that attract people to the more "artistic" element of the festival again or they are going to have to rely on doing more than one fest to recoup. But this is Bonnaroo. And they classically are known for their two steps forward, one fat step back -- like after rolling out fantastic bathroom service in 2015; literally not having staffs out on Wed night and Thursday after how many years of people showing up early? Miscommunication of what the vibe of the fest was and it's evolution; seemed to come to full fruition last year and we can just hope they do a better job not just streamlining and adapting somehow. If they get 55k this year, there's some type of hope - but I can't imagine what a 2018 card worth going to will be like without.. I don't know, a Kendrick, Beyonce, Radiohead, Gorillaz, etc level up there. And they probably blew their load early with that other Kendrick HL spot. But we shall see.

Really? Dead & Co has 3 of the 4 members who are still alive and Mayer has shown he can blend in nicely. Pearl Jam skipped out on playing DC during the 2013 tour to play a college town (Charlottesville).
I know LCD is not popular with the college crowd and did not help sell tickets last year, but sales wouldn't been much better if they had Radiohead/Phish instead of Pearl Jam/Dead & Co.
Pearl Jam and The Dead do fine with college kids too. I know milinneals and they don't all just sit around listening to Childish Gambino and Flume everyday. Gov Ball is a good example of a festival capitalizing on the undercard. Tool is a good headliner, don't get me wrong. But Tool/Phoenix/Chance isn't that strong of a headliner group. Tool is probably not that all more well known in college circles than LCD. Hardcore fans could probably find another show within striking distance if they wanted. They tour a lot. Meanwhile sets like Parker v. Ronson and rare acts like The Avalanches are probably generating just as much buzz.

This thread makes me sad. LCD is one of the many reasons why I chose to give my money to Shaky Knees instead of Bonnaroo this year. I'm a 7 year Bonnaroo vet and can't see myself returning to the farm with lineups like these.
