I think if there was ever a year to do it, this coming year (after he drops an album) they will book JT. That alone will make up for poor ticket sales and then they will fill the rest with the Bonnaroo type acts people know and love and the bands that will be touring for undercards will probably be solid again after a year on the down turn.

Yeah, I think this would actually be a good move on Bonnaroo's part. Booking a big pop star who has wide appeal (i.e., JT or Beyonce) will move a boatload of tickets without upsetting too many Bonnaroo regulars. The wooks might cry foul, but they're probably a small part of the Bonnaroo demographic these days.

There seems to be agreement that Bonnaroo needs a headliner that can play stadiums. Beyonce, JT, Rolling Stone, Roger Waters ... doesn't really matter who. Pearl Jam and Dead & Bros just didn't fit that this year.

* Plus: Surprise late night set by Chris Gaines
Honestly, this could work with the right under card. Load up on all the indie approved country out there like Ryan Adams, Strugill, Alison Kraus, Hiss Golden Messenger ... try to get Dolly out there. It's no goofier than Billy Joel, and would be a far more entertaining show (IMO, at least).

Yea, part of this was joking because I know a lot of folks on here wouldn't be super interested in it but part of it was serious. He would be a big draw in Tennessee and if they did get some solid country undercard like you mention then there'd be a lot of southern fans interested. Then just put up some other headliner or late nights to draw in the younger crowd.
I definitely agree that it's not goofier than Joel.

Speaking of "the right undercard" I'm sitting here listening to Day of the Dead and getting pissed off about how badly they squandered booking the Dead. This would have been a primo opportunity to tap into the Grateful Dead's growing appeal outside of the wook circles and book some of these crossover bands that were influenced by the Dead but are also a draw in their own right. Instead they just stove piped some "other stuff that will appeal to Deadheads" without trying to create anything dynamic.
There seems to be agreement that Bonnaroo needs a headliner that can play stadiums... Pearl Jam just didn't fit that this year.
Right, and when you look at all the other bands I mentioned, they're playing stadiums in more than two markets, and not just playing "special" places like Wrigley and Fenway. Dave Matthews Band could probably pull off one or two stadiums in the right markets, and no one is seriously suggesting him to save the day next year (I hope).

I think it would be a smart move on their part, obviously from a financial prospective, but also for long-term survival, especially if they can nab Beyonce or JT for their first major US fests. People can talk all they want about undercard, but there are only so many fests that can get a stadium-sized headliner, so that then becomes a major asset of those festivals. Booking an act of that caliber would help play a part in reaffirming the purpose of major fests

I have plenty of friends that were really interested in Bonnaroo this year because of how my friend and I had hyped it up and with some of the possibilities thrown around they were excited but once they saw Pearl Jam, The Dead & Co. and LCD they were like "eh, even with a good undercard I want the main act to be something I'm interested in". I'm not saying there weren't good acts to book and no doubt can sell out arenas but none of them have enough cross-over appeal for casual fans that WANT to go to Bonnaroo. You take out any one of those headliners and put in Beyonce or anyone like that and they would probably have zero issues selling tickets. I would think they've realized that and will adjust accordingly in 2017. Personally I think the undercard is lacking this year more than anything. They have some pretty good acts on it but not near the level that they used to have. (That money probably went to bathrooms and stuff though too)

It's easy to say "they should nab Beyonce or JT!"
They know that. Trust me certain acts get offered every year; most of the time those acts aren't interested or unavailable. Then they just have to make do with what is available to them.

This is very true. I wonder if they need to start booking people earlier though in order to try and get names before others nab them up though.

One would hope signing with Live Nation would give them better access to headlining talent, but what do I know. Maybe it was only about the toilets.
Fenway Park's capacity is like 38,000 - and probably less for a concert. He's referring to stadiums - like bands that play MetLife Stadium or wherever and sell out 90k tickets.

Yeah, like Big Sean!
The fact that Big Sean is a bigger selling point than ASAP Rocky makes me question what people see in Big Sean. He has to be one the most offensively average and faceless rapper out now.

It's a fairly irrelevant point but I bet Fenway's capacity goes up for concerts, at least based on the pictures I've seen. Those field seats offset plus some the outfield bleachers behind the stage.
Edit: it looks like for some shows they actually sell the bleachers behind the stage, no idea if they did that for Pearl Jam

Big Sean is a better rapper and performer than ASAP Rocky, fight me.
so everyone is just assuming like last year that ticket sales are down? based on what this time around?
Some anecdotal evidence from people. Specifically some vendor has supposedly said attendance/sales are looking like they'll be down this year....or are down so far.

This anecdotal evidence is consistent with the elimination of the Pod 1 GA camping area. No reason to have so much camping space if expected attendance is way down.
And wow, you're like a walking, talking infomercial to turn people away from Pearl Jam and Ohio State, aren't you? Before you started posting here I quite liked Pearl Jam and was indifferent towards OSU, now I find myself wishing that Eddie Vedder falls down a mine shaft or that Columbus is infested with locusts
