This is a pretty fascinating mix of horror, thriller and sci-fi. Not quite as clear on where he's heading as his father but young Cronenberg definitely learned a lot. The gore in this is brutal.
It probably was based on it. De Palma basically remade this movie with Raising Cain. It's also thematically similar to Blowup, which he also remade. It's in his wheelhouse for sure.
Pretty good. Very creepy. Drags a little in spots.
In college I took a course on postmodernism and we watched some films, like Blade Runner, Blow Up, and Blow Out. When we watched Blow Out, there's the opening scene where Travolta's listening to his tapes of nature sounds and stuff, he's basically like "this sucks", and he plays a thunder sound that sounds really weak. Immediately after that there was a massive thunderclap outside IRL that really drove the point home. So meta.

I liked this one a good bit. Not a horror film, but a verrrrrry slow burn thriller-type movie. Terrible reviews on Amazon Prime, because I think people expected more of a John Grisham deal. I'm not posting the trailer, because it's pretty misleading. I think it's on Hulu for free.
