Every time I ask someone why they hate DMB it's for strictly two reasons. They say "They're fans are all Bros and suck" so I reply, "well I'm a fan would you consider me a bro?" and they realize their vast generalization has been proved wrong (though I have been subjected to these horrible fans they speak of, yes they do exist).
As someone who has been to dozens of Dave shows big and small, I can say this:
When Dave comes around on summer tour, the tickets are reasonable, and there's tailgating to be enjoyed... a bad crowd rolls in. Very young, very drunk, very rambunctious.. in 2002, someone even threw a brick through my friends window and stole everything out of the car- including our purses which were hidden. They are not there for the music, they are there for the party.
Bigger shows that are more expensive and don't have tailgating tend to have crowds that are more mature and take care of themselves. Big shows in NYC and Philly ware always awesome. At the Caravan last year, I was honestly AMAZED at the crowd. I've never been a part of such a united, passionate, yet respectful crowd. It makes me smile just to think about how amazing those nights were.
So long story short, when people talk about the fans. I ignore them.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
Great lineup, I say! I'm a jam guy, so maybe that's why I feel that way, but really though, great stuff. Didn't get to catch Gorgol at Roo last year, really excited about that. Big hopes for Wilco and the SCI set. I've always wanted to see Dispatch, and what better setting than the beach? Really looking forward to Shpongle (maybe full band?) nighttime on the beach, too. Was really hoping for Phish or Eddie Vedder this year, the return of Trombone Shorty, Mariachi el Bronx, and Xavier, but right now undercard favorites are Alabama Shakes. Those guys are fantastic.
Question: Why does everyone hate DMB these days? Is it lack of new stuff? Some of the fans are obnoxious? Seen em too many times? Phish hits every category for me, but I love those guys. DMB's one of the most important touring bands in the world. They're so great live. I'm not too old...when I was in college it was pretty out of the ordinary for people not to like them. My school didn't even have frats! Maybe I'm a bro, ha. The only bro in Lima.
Anywho, I think this lineup is awesome! I hope y'all get excited about it. I think Hangout's all about having great individual experiences at shows, taking it all in, as opposed to something like Roo which is a break-neck 4 day musical onslaught.
Anywho, hope the next headliner is musical and not comedy. Can't wait!

Then the MOST common answer "They're music sucks!" which in the case of this answer I generally respond with "Oh, what songs have you heard?" Which 95% of the time is responded with "You know that one big one, crash into me".... My point is 95% of people who "Hate" DMB, have absolutely no idea what your talking about. Now if you hate them and have listened to at least one good album (Before these crowded streets, or Lillywhite sessions, Remember two things or maybe Crash) and have seen part of a live show and still "Hate" them. Then by all means, continue. You've given them a fair chance, but this is rarely the case.
Hold up, who's being the presumptuous, overgeneralizing one here? You seriously think 95% of people who don't like them aren't being fair? Different people have different tastes.

Mac has more skills than Gramps posted vids show but I do agree that he is nothing to really be excited about. I would much rather see Atmosphere than Mac or Yelawolf.
i loved this fest last year but this lineup doesn't have anything that makes me want to spend all that money and that drive that far to go back. i know there is a another headliner coming and more adds, but it's not going to be enough for me.
Just checked it out, with the exception of Skrillex and Mac Miller it's a real solid lineup, and if it was a camping festival I'd be there, but it's not. But really the incredible jam and rock and then mac miller, I'm not surprised with skrillex, but mac miller? How does that fit with the rest of the lineup? Hey here's a bunch of great jam, great rock, a little electronica, and then something my 15 year old brother listens too..... wtf?
Your 15-year-old brother likes him too? He's my 15-year-old brother's favorite...

Things must have changed since I first followed DMB in the early '90s. (Oh, the good ol' days of seeing them in small bars!) Some of the best tailgating experiences I had were in Hartford & Foxboro between '95-'98. The vibe then was totally mellow...but with only a fraction of the frattastic bro fan scene.
Bottom line: stereotypes may seem like a real time-saver, but they're not always accurate. Go for the music, not the people. And if you can see a band you love with a cold drink in your hand & sand between your toes, then just close your eyes & enjoy the music. You won't see the jerkstore fans then anyway. #WinWin

Yeah, don't you hate when people get overly generalized like that.
Alright, let's hear why you hate Dave.
Most people either say because of his voice or because the music is too percussive. People like their poppy electric guitar.

Is this lineup going to sellout, and if so, how soon? Does the lineup have enough mass appeal? Have people already bought into the Hangout brand that they will go regardless?

it will sellout super fast. #1 because of the location. capacity is only 35k, so dmb is pretty much all they needed to sell it out. add sci, sts9, dispatch, skrillex, oakenfold, flips. it's going to go really fast.

If I remember correctly the fest sold out in around a month last year, but i'm sure last year secured a lot of repeat customers who want to bring new friends (like me). I really don't expect tickets to last past the weekend this time around. This fest is like Bonnaroo to me where even if the lineup isn't great i'll still go just for the atmosphere and people.
Can you swim in the water while you watch? It'd be so much cooler if the beach was secluded and had on beach camping and was far FAR away from any city. Cities, bleckh.
I thought we had something special going, Phi. 3 Ways and thinking about you while I brush my teeth.. Sigh.
But really, as it stands now, I have no one My sister is a maybe and I know a group of guys that are going that say their condo miiight be overfull, so maybe I could take on a few of them. I really want to buy my ticket on Friday, but I am worried that I won't be able to go due to lack of friends

I really was going to give it a good chance, but this lineup is def pits for my musical tastes. I hate jam bands, i hate franti, and the rest i'm already seeing elsewhere. just cant spend that much on a beach skrillex set :-P

I really hope this means Roo gets a shot at Randy Newman. I don't know if I'll make it to Hangout this year because of a work conflict overseas but I need to see Randy this summer if he's touring.

You can't swim in the water at the show itself, unfortunately, but you can go swimming in front of any of the condos that are next door to it.
If you're looking for seclusion, the Gulf State Park where a lot of people go to camp is pretty secluded man. Tons of wide open space. No tall condos around (except maybe off in the distance). Gulf Shores is an amazing beach town, and you definitely don't feel like you're in a city. It's nothing like Destin, Panama City, Miami, or even Pensacola, for that matter.

lol, it's like when kastanza does everything the opposite of what'd he'd normally do in that one seinfeld episode, but you're doing it with posts. You're very good at this I must say.

I would much rather see Atmosphere than Mac or Yelawolf. Here's some Atmosphere.
Still not impressed with Mac. However, I have been lobbying on the Hangout FB page for a few months for Atmosphere. They'd be a perfect fit. Especially after seeing vids of their set at Lollapalooza last year.

Yea, I saw Atmosphere at Red Rocks last year and they did not disappoint. They know how to rock a crowd.

Lineup is quite underwhelming compared to last years. Maybe the additions will help. Who is everyone expecting the additional headliner to be? I was expecting The Beach Boys to be at Hangout just on principle alone but they don't seem to fit as "the big add" for this lineup. It already seems like kind of a snooze-fest geared towards an older demographic and The Beach Boys would only add to that. RHCP maybe?
I like the idea of wilco, jack white, and flaming lips, but I really hope Bonnaroo tops this. I don't see how it can't, really.. Now I will have to convince my friends that we DON'T need to go to Hangout. Very dissatisfied
