I'd like to see some political hip-hop rather than the mindless party hip-Pop we got this year. When you have to say "What" more than 10 times in a song then it's filler to compensate for your lack of actual lyrics. Lupe Fiasco or the Coup would be nice.

The Coup no longer exist, do they? Thought that Boots was pretty much solo now.
And the fact that you think Lupe Fiasco is "political" or has "actual lyrics" is hilarious. Have you heard anything he's released in the last 4 years or so? His newest album is about as "political" as B.o.B.'s album was.
And I will never, ever understand why people hold hip-hop to a higher standard in terms of content than they do other art forms. Do you only listen to rock and roll that has deeper meaning or political subtext? Because if that's the case, you probably didn't like much of Bonnaroo at all this year. There's really nothing wrong with listening to music that's just about having a good time and isn't trying to say anything important.
Because to a certain extent hip hop IS content. I can stand inane lyrics from Phish because of the intricate instrumentation, and the way it is composed.
I hate to even weigh in on this because I listen to so little hip hop, but my personal favorite for several years has been Chali2na, I am not sure if he is "relevant" or not I just like his voice, and flow.

My only problem with this argument is that I, personally, can't fucking stand Phish's ridiculous, mindless lyrics. If you want to be an instrumental band and focus on solely the instrumentation, do that, but don't put all your work into the instruments and then phone in the vocals. I can really enjoy Phish sometimes but every time their lyrics come in I wish they wouldn't even bother. I know this has nothing to do with hip-hop, but you saying that just triggered a frustration I've had with them for awhile.

DIfferent strokes I guess, like Juggs said about rap, I just consider it a different instrument rather than something to seek relevance from. Also some are mindless, and some actually make sense.
I bet we get Lupe Fiasco next year as well as Blackstar. I see the top rap acts in no order being Lupe, Blackstar, J. Cole, Odd Future, and Wiz. I know both Wiz and J Cole were there thus year but I see both if them becoming more popular and climbing up the lineup. I think Lupe and Odd Future get LN back to back in same tent.
I just don't see a major rap headliner next year bc there aren't many acts left that could do it. JayZ/Kanye could but I don't see Jay Z back so soon just like I don't see Neil Young coming back soon. Outkast could but I see that as highly unlikely. I don't know who else that could headline besides Dr Dre and I don't see that happening either. I would love to any of these acts but I don't think we will next year. We will get mainstream acts which I think the festival needs just not any of the big boys
except I'm throwing Odd Future out of the bill if I could, hate to say it, but I want a group more concentrated on their artistry to rock out. Even if I love their mixtapes
You are probably right about Wiz. Odd Future could get a LN spot. Omar Soleyman(i know i spelled that wrong) got one and hardly anyone knew who he was. Omar had The Other Tent not even half full and it only started to fill when Gogol's crowd decided to show up. Odd Future would pack The Other Tent out easily. Lupe and OF being back to back is unlikely but I bet we get both of them. I just think it would be cool to see them back to back.
We don't have a general hip hop 2012 thread yet cause you havnt started Juggs

I would love to see Boots with Morello. I'm shocked that Street Sweeper Social Club still hasn't played Roo.
And wow, you're like a walking, talking infomercial to turn people away from Pearl Jam and Ohio State, aren't you? Before you started posting here I quite liked Pearl Jam and was indifferent towards OSU, now I find myself wishing that Eddie Vedder falls down a mine shaft or that Columbus is infested with locusts

I thought we had some intel that SSSC would be there this year. I can't remember where that came from. Maybe it fell through, or was just bad info. I've heard mixed reviews of their live show, but I'd feel semi-obligated to check them out.

You mean his new album Lasers with the anarchy symbol on the cover? The one associated with his political diatribe, The L.A.S.E.R.S. Manifesto? The one he's going on shows like The Colbert Report to promote while he talks about politics? Yes, I'm familiar.
No, it isn't a different standard. I don't listen to much mindless pop with lots of filler in any genre. If someone takes the time to write intelligent, thoughtful hip-hop lyrics then they're probably also taking the time to write intelligent, thoughtful music to go with it. That's probably why hip-hop artists who continue the genres tradition of political commentary are the ones I generally like better. Ten minutes of "What? Put your hands up!" is boring and lazy in ANY genre.

You do realize Lupe was quoted as hating L.A.S.E.R.S, right? It was forced, broke away from what had people gravitating towards him, and he came off as fake.
Lupe's early stuff was way, way, WAY better and original than his recent stuff. He comes off as a kid trying to be Immortal Technique, but without the heart.

Maybe I should have been more clear. It's "political" like a teenager buying a Che Guevara t-shirt at Hot Topic is "political." You can rap about political nonsense, sexual nonsense, violent nonsense, it's still nonsense.

He said he hated it but he still is promoting the hell out of it. Lasers was awful and I forgive him for it because I know it was forced by the label. Lupe is still IMO the most talented rapper in hip hop. All his loose tracks from the past year that weren't on lasers prove that alone.
As the father of a 14 year old boy, and a 11 year old girl I am pretty happy with their musical tastes. Peer pressure from school has made them like some questionable bands, but I remember liking Poison for the same reasons at their age. I did take the daughter to see Hannah Montana a couple of years ago though. She was going to a snotty private school at the time so having a dad that can get you side stage for Hannah, or Taylor Swift got her a little bit of needed cachet at that point in time.
Last year I took them to Phish at Deer Creek, and this year we did Hangout so if they end up having terrible taste in tunes it should not be my fault. There is something great about taking kids to MMW, Flips, DBT etc.. that made me appreciate the music in a new way. Also both are pretty die hard LCD fans.
Well, in 5th grade I bought the Spice World (Spice Girls) album. I don't think I've ever seen my Dad so disappointed. But you seem to be doing what my Dad did for me, which is open the eyes of younger people to music not mainstream in their age group.
Not surprised you bought that album. And it looks like you were disappointing your dad at a very early age. Way to keep up the tradition.

I hope no one ever finds out what you listened to in 5th grade, especially since you were raised in the 80's :: shakes head ::
