I am a US Navy Sailor. Specifically, I'm a Fire Controlman, and my job consists of operation and maintenance of the ship's weapons systems. Right now I'm still in school, and probably will be for another year or so. I miss my old life. College, bartending, festie after festie... Responsibilty. Yuck-o.
I'm sorry to tell you this, but you sir...are Dante Hicks.
This I already realized years ago, when I was in my first year of doing it as a part-time gig... To my credit, I left the other part-time job and finished college. Dante didn't do that.
I used the last of my student loans back in February to pay my rent through the end of August. I figured it was probably the last opportunity in my life to have something resembling a summer off, and I went for it, thinking I'd be fine holding off on a capital-J job search until the end of summer. And then, the economy went to hell...
Since there was some talk of cigarette prices... Camel/Kools 5.31 Marlboro/Parliament 5.95 Basics 5.35 Pall Malls 5.00 American Spirits/Newports 6.11
Prices suck here because our governor jacked up the tax on them at the beginning of this year. I estimate that douchebag is taking an extra $375-400 from me this year if I stay at a pack a day. It certainly doesn't help me that the fucker instituted a hiring freeze. My political science degree is even more worthless here without government jobs to be had - in my state's capital, no less. All that's hiring seems to be in healthcare and software, so I'm stuck being Dante for the time being.

I'm a reading teacher at a private school for kids w/dyslexia and a number of related disorders-ADHD/ADD, math, written expression, anxiety, OCD, Asperger's (many), whatever they come with
It is truly a blessing to work here. No day is ever the same, and the kids are really characters. Our school could definitely be a sitcom. It's great to go to a job every day that you love-One of my Thanksgiving thanks

American Spirits can be had for about 5.25 down here... thing is that its impossible to find the menthols so I always go to the same place and don't do much comparison shopping when it comes to cigs...
edit: Oh, and I'm currently a grad student in theology and will hopefully end up PhD track in philosophy or fundamental theology (i.e., not as in "Christian fundamentalist," but rather "foundational" or philosophical theology).

btw karma, purplefuzzystuff, for wanting to go into hospice chaplaincy--- that's some emotionally tough but very commendable and socially necessary work.
damn! cigs are expensive by you, kdogg! $3.50 here
Seems cheap to me! In Massachusetts, cigarettes were about $5.10 or so until mid-summer... then we got a big price hike, and now it's around $6.50 a pack. I was down in New York City for Thanksgiving, they're nearly ten bucks there. You're just lucky you live in a big tobacco-producing state with the third lowest cigarette tax in the country.
I manage the IT department at a small, four year, liberal arts college. I am also currently a graduate student working on an MBA in Information Systems Management and pick up IT consulting jobs on the side whenever I can.
As I hold a management position at a college located less than three hours from Manchester some of my funniest Bonnaroo moments involve reactions from the students I run into as they are engaged in various activities which would be unacceptable on campus.
I also work for Marriott.... and I too dislike many people that stay at my hotel.
I travel a lot for work. I have more Marriott points than any other hotel chain. Marriotts are by far my least favorite hotels. So there.
The last time I stayed at a Marriott was in July when I went to the wedding of two friends in St. Louis. I ordered room service for a late dinner one night, and when the steward came in to serve the meal, he uncovered the main dish to reveal... a half-eaten hamburger and fries! All I managed to say was "Well, THAT's not what I ordered," before he scrambled off and returned with my club sandwich. Apparently he had picked up the wrong tray off the serving line.

No offense at all to you, but I truly couldn't care less. I've heard and seen some awful poop over the years and nothing phases me anymore.
Edit: For example... I've had a guy completely yell at me because MY hotel (didn't know I owned the place and didn't know it was MY fault) has the crappiest hardcore porn that he's ever seen...
I'm Technical Director for a major seal company (plastics and rubber) which means I get to run the R&D group. We have a lot of cool tools including a material test lab that looks like something out of CSI and a product test lab with lots of hydraulic machines wanking back and forth or round and round all day. Great team of guys to work with so I enjoy it a lot. Last blessing is that the company has maintained our budget for 2009 even though it's tempting to cut R&D during a recession.
The seal business might sound dull but it's actually pretty Green as we do a lot to save energy and keep nasty stuff out of the soil or the atmosphere.
I'm in the hotel management with Marriott. Some interesting times but mostly it just makes me like people less.

I'll hopefully be down in your neck of the woods (well, Raleigh) by Roo time. Not a lot of Marriott jobs in North Carolina at the moment, that's for sure!
As far as guests go, there are plenty of great and kind people traveling these days but they do tend to get overshadowed by the d!cks.

I won't work for another brand. It's not perfect but after a one-year tour with Hyatt, I know how bad it can be out there. If I stop working for Marriott I'm probably done in the hotel industry.
I'm sorry Marriott's not for you - out of curiosity, what flags have you tried?

Just an illustrative anecdote...
Sounds like he was trying to clear trays from the floors at the same time as he was delivering. The above is an example of why we discourage that particular bit of multi-tasking.

Classy. Like those creeps that call and ask for things to be delivered to their rooms so that they can answer the door naked. It never ceases to amaze me at the crap some a-holes will pull to get their ya-ya's off at the expense of others.

Yeah, people do the weirdest thing in hotels... we just banned a regular flasher a couple weeks ago. I'm really thankful for the nice people out there, though. It makes me a better person being out interacting with people that are just trying to do their jobs.
Raleigh, huh? I've never really been out that way, but the business has to be good. I can't believe this whole tradeout BS though.
Yeah, free is always best. I suspect that it was being abused by people not participating and that's why they put a nominal rate on it. There's always someone trying to get away with something and screwing over everyone else!

I work in the clinical labs at a big medical center. Done some transfusion medicine, some stem cell work but now I'm mostly a computer tapper. Glamorous it ain't but health care is damn near recession proof, which how I wound up with a hospital job in the first place. Went to school to be a wildlife biologist and liked to have starved to death on what I was making...

So you hotel workers, quick question. As a poor college student planning a trip over the break, what are the odds of getting caught in a hotel room with way more people than you should? For example, paying for 2 people in the room and putting 6 people in. What, exactly, can happen if you DID get caught?
Not that I would do that or anything...
Me, I'm finishing up a BS in psychology and a BA in political science this weekend. Officially next week I will start full-time in public policy at Planned Parenthood. I absolutely love what I do.
I'll be full-time at PP for a semester, then I will start my Master's In Public Administration (with a focus in nonprofit management) in the fall I would LOVE to be CEO of Planned Parenthood one day, or perhaps run my own music-related nonprofit.

Ah, go for it. No one at my place really checks or cares as long as it's not loud. We're required to tell you that a two double bed room has a maximum capacity of 5 and a king has a maximum capacity of 3... but that's just for fire code BS. We don't charge per person either... so if you go to one of those types of hotels, I'm not sure what their policy is.
Anytime you have a question about a particular place, though, just call at a random time of day... don't give your real name or book your room right then... but just ask. Trust me... it won't be the weirdest question they've ever heard.
Most Marriott properties don't charge per person. Usually maximum occupancy numbers are a reflection of the local fire code.
As long as your party is chill nobody's going to care. If they are noisy or if you bring seven friends with you to check in there may be problems but hotel people are kinda bred to not be confrontational so if you don't force a situation there probably won't be one.
That said, if the hotel was strict and you did get caught you could end up evicted and losing your money but that's pretty much a worst-case scenario.
Much like Bonnaroo, if you are respectful of others everything should be fine.

It's like we work at the same place!!! ... oh wait... ;D
At this point I'd consider the Charlotte - Chapel Hill commute!!! There are now only two management jobs on Marriott's website for all of NC! Oh well, I've still got about eight months until I really need to be down there -- I'm sure something'll come up.
We seem to do one of these threads each year. Well ok than, I'm a graphic artist for the largest graphic arts company in the world. I was with the 7th largest, but # 1 bought us. ;D
