A lot of people are upset with the current announcement situation, and instead of just complaining about it on a message board, I think we should tell Superfly how we feel. I created a petition for you to sign if you agree that this whole addition announcement was poorly handled. I tried to make it as vague as possible, so that whether or not you're a WSP fan, Les fan, or anything else, you just need to agree with the general sentiment that in the future we would like not to feel tricked with misleading advertising. If we can get a couple hundred signatures and show it to them, they might take fans like us into account more next time.
ETA: Just to be crystal clear, if you read the position you will see it is NOT a petition against any of the artists added. I myself will probably attend and enjoy some of their sets. It is a petition against a pre-announcement announcement that many of us feel was misleading.

^^And you get some sense!
penguins, while I fully support your petition making and am damn glad to see someone taking initiative, I personally won't sign it only because I feel like we are more to blame for hyping it up than superfly. But seriously, karma for doing something

I agree with strum. It's like Christmas - I remember the year I was disappointed because I got this spinny light thing instead of whatever it was that I wanted. But what do I remember now? The really cool spinny light thing.

Nobody tricked you. All Superfly said was that they had a big announcement, and then BonnarooDetective and some other people said it would have to be something at least on par with Prince, and everyone ran with it. Superfly never said anything of the sort. There were even people on the board here saying that lots of people were probably in for a big disappointment, and still everyone's surprised.
Furthermore, Superfly can't let Coachella and Lollapalooza dictate what they do with their festival, because if they do, they've already lost control of it. If you really want to protest the way they're doing business, don't go, sell your ticket. That's why they made the Stubhub announcement.

Yeah, you thought they would compete. If you're saying that the other festivals really do dictate what Superfly needs to do, are you saying you're going to go to one of them instead of Bonnaroo this year?

I have already bought my tickets and airflight to Bonnaroo this year, but I decided to go to Rothbury as well because of their awesome lineup. My inclination after this year towards bonnaroo will be much less because of their lack of competitiveness this year. So, in effect I am going to another fest this year because of lineups, and have had my view of their product lowered.

Basically, I think that the announcement of an announcement was horrible, especially when we all know that they had these bands lined up when they announced the ABB canceling. Why not just do it all at once???

And that's fine. The best way to tell a business you don't like the way they operate is not to give them your money. People are talking about how other festivals' lineups are better, but they don't seem to be going to those festivals. You made a logical decision (and Rothbury looks really nice)

thats true, It prob would of gone over a lot better if they had just included these additions with the abb cancellation announcement

I guess they could've announced it then, but it really doesn't make too much of a difference if you've already bought your ticket. In the past, Bonnaroo has said "stay tuned for more additions," and everyone wanted to know when they would be. This time Bonnaroo said they'd be on Thursday, and it was made out to be a big deal under the assumption that they would be competing with the Prince addition.

I honestly am at a loss to understand why people are so pissed. The only reason everyone seems disapointed is because they expected this announcement to be a reaction to Prince at Coachella. But it wasn't. It was a reaction to the allmans cancelling, something unexpected and totally out of Superfly's control. They pulled in some old friends on short notice because they were in a pinch. Coachella was planning the Prince announcement for months. They never should have been compared.
And even after the announcements I still think Roo has the strongest overall lineup. Lolla's headliners look great....for 1994. Now 2 of the 3 acts are well past their prime and the best undercard acts are also at Roo. And others are complaining about WSP at Roo so they're going to Rothbury instead to see....WSP!?!!?! I fail to see the logic in that.
I'm with Bonscot on this one. Petitioning Roo for failing to live up to unrealistic expectations is just plain lame.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it

Man, I don't know how you can say the Bonnaroo lineup doesn't compete with the other festivals this year. I'll admit the headliners are kind of weak, but compare the rest of the acts on the bill with what other festies have. Bonnaroo has a deep lineup of talent. Much deeper than most. In the end, that's where you get your money's worth, IMO. And really, are Rothbury's headliners (DMB - WSP - John Mayer) better than Roo? Not to me anyway.
All Superfly said was there would be a big announcement - and guess what - a lot of people that go to Roo will consider WSP/Claypool "big" and "exciting" I'm not one of them, but it's kind of a bit much to start a petition because you don't agree with a subjective statement made by a promoter. Some people got their hopes up way too high and now feel let down...that's understandable, but you weren't lied to - you just don't agree that it's a big announcement. I guarantee you plenty of people did..most of them apparently aren't on this message board

Your words could not be any more correct. I just dont get it either. Again, id rather WSP close my weekend than JJ, so im good.
Im not actually going to sign the petition. Im very pleased with the lineup this year because there's not too many bands that i don't want to check out on the lineup. But when i looked at all the people signing the petition i saw that one guy wrote this, which is pretty funny.
"this is like being shot in the heart and then kicked in the di¢k as an apology"
"Furthermore, Superfly can't let Coachella and Lollapalooza dictate what they do with their festival, because if they do, they've already lost control of it"
good point Skold. i was convinced we had something big, and i still think Superfly knew we'd get overly excited...
but you right... bonnaroo must be different and remain distinct. and if they let other festivals dictate their selections then they have lost control...
I'm starting to feel a lot better about this addition. Yes, I was initially disappointed because I was hoping for something huge, but what it comes down to is, the lineup is still basically the same, and we got a few more quality additions. No Prince like additions, but quality additions nonetheless.
And I personally think our headliners are great.
Pearl Jam: ACL goers were pissed that they DIDNT get Pearl Jam. I'd say they're a huge headliner.
Metallica: Freaking metal legends and haven't played the US in 4 years. Even if you're not a fan, you have to admit thats a pretty name on the bill.
Widespread Panic: Yeah they've headlined before several times, but they seem to have brought it every time.
Plus in addition to these 3 we already have 4 other headliner worthy names in Jack Johnson, Kanye West, Phil Lesh & Friends, and Robert Plant & Allison Krauss
Not to mention the undercard of MMJ, Sigur Ros, BSS, and legends such as BB King, Levon Helm, Bela Fleck, etc. Our faces will be melted the heck off.
So after the initial disappointment has sunken in and taken its toll, I'm back to feeling that we've got a great lineup and Bonnaroo is going to be a tremendous time this year.
Basically, I think that the announcement of an announcement was horrible, especially when we all know that they had these bands lined up when they announced the ABB canceling. Why not just do it all at once???
Personally, I don't know that "they had these bands lined up when they announced the ABB canceling." They may have needed the extra time to work out the details.
the next time someone pretends the roo crowd isn't changing, i'll just point them to the page where we are all bitching about adding wsp and claypool... come on ppl, these are two of the three most dedicated roo performers (where the hell did warren go??) and we are signing petitions? (btw, go for it if u believe in it, power to the people!)
superfly looked out for the core fanbase, and i have ripped them mercilessly on these boards for failing to do that this year. i spent just as much time pouring over the clues pages as almost anybody. it was fun.
the sellouts at AC/ superfly just got a lil shakedown-street cred back in my book.
