Sometimes I wonder why people come to shows. Like all the people on the lawn at MMJ talking constantly. I just wanted to yell at them to go to the bar. Like literally all you want to do is get together and talk. Put MMJ on in the background in the bar. So I don’t have to hear you fucking talking through Golden and Dondante.
That’s why if I I’m going to an amphitheater show for an act I’m really into, I try to avoid lawn/GA seats. It seems like a good percentage of those who get lawn seats for summer amphitheater shows are just looking to catch up with friends while catching the 2-3 songs they know going into the show.
We were fortunate - I didn’t even plan to go Friday when I woke up. I had some work circumstances that allowed us to get on the road fairly early, saw the forecast was calling for no rain, and orchestra seats were only $35-40 on Stubhub. We were 4 rows behind the pit.
We got lawn because we saw Vampire Weekend there and it was great. That place is so small that you’re not far away even on the lawn. Was just really disappointed in the MMJ crowd. Usually when we see them we’re in the pit.
I went to a show yesterday and it ended at 10. That was nice, I wish more shows ended a little earlier. Those Midnight drives down 95 from Boston get a little rougher as I get older.
Cloud Nothings played for 1 hr 15 min, which I wish was a little longer. But they were good. It was wicked loud.
hell yea, i bailed last minute on that show since they barely play old material anymore and wanted to chill w my partner instead but glad ya had a good time! pics look like it undersold a bit, i wonder if theyll play a smaller venue here next time
Went to my first show in 19 months last night and saw Phoebe Bridgers in Louisville. Was a great performance/crowd and beautiful evening and can't believe I didn't bawl my eyes out over the joy of being back together with live music. Here's hoping I never have to endure a long gap like that again! (Next show will be St. Vincent on Tuesday so obviously stoked for that)
Took my dad to see Future Islands at the Greek Theatre last Wednesday. He really enjoyed it, more than I expected he would. Also went to Hella Mega on Friday at Dodger Stadium. Awful traffic around the stadium meant we missed half of Weezer's set but they easily made up for it with the second half.

Since August 13, massive gatherings are allowed again and since then I've basically been gone every weekend to watch and experience live music again.
Highlights!! : - Stuff. @ Jazz Middelheim (8/13), the first without any restriction (one) day festival I've been to and the whole concert(venue) was filled with people who were ecstatic just like us. Insane how hyped litteraly everyone was. 5,000 peeps going nuts over jazzrock/electronica is now already one of THE highlights for me of the year so far. If they ever make it to the US and go on tour, you HAVE to catch them live.
- Froukje @ Crammerock (9/3), my favorite and most played artist since the start of 2021 and FINALLY been able to catch her (after trying to see her for the whole summer). Her lyrics are as emo as Billie Eilish sometimes can be but the production/beats whatever are insanely catchy radio/electro pop songs and.. Everything came together at that concert. Sung every song with my full chest. Seeing her back in October and can. not. wait.
- Balthazar @ Crammerock (9/3), probably Belgium's best export product after Stromae (and perhaps Amenra). The best time I've seen them. Full headline show in the dark. Front-row. Good vibes all around.
- The Kooks @ Crammerock (9/4), was in the pit (again) and some random girl who was standing next to me was as psyched to see them as I was. I was completely alone that day since my friend got very ill (food poisoning) so the fact that I got to enjoy that 90 mins with someone so friendly and so psyched for some band as I was, was so lovely. Loved every second of that show.
- Brutus @ Crammerock (9/3), uh ya.. Brutus is also a great Belgian export product ofcourse. Stefanie fkn smashed it. She's insane on drums. And 'Alone' hits ALWAYS right on that sweet spot
- Amenra @ Antwerp (9/10), Seeing Amenra for the first time in like 3 years was something else. They've a new record under their belt, Tim De Gieter has joined the band and it's insane what he brings to the table. Songs somehow feel different than with Levy but not in a bad way necessary. 'Voor Immer' and 'De Evenmens' are great additions to their setlist material. Most beautiful, goosebump-worthy feeling? A moment of like 3 minutes where small rain drops fell from the sky during 'A Solitary Reign'. This band plays on another level, they're so immense and massive..
- 2manydjs @ Brussels (9/12), headlining this event was Peggy Gou before her, these absolute legends smashed the stage. They played that Marie Davidson remix, threw in Blue Monday, played some electro and industrial techno. Great mixing and selecting.
- Peggy Gou @ Brussels (9/12), three hours of pure euphoria. Closing the evening with You Make Me Feel by Sylvester gave me so much joy and serotonine. Everyone around us (just like with Stuff.) was so happy and ecstatic to FINALLY dance again. Fuck me, this was so sweet.
Those were just some highlights but I've been and seen more ofcourse.

I had some egg on my face last week. The wife and I do a trip to Lake Nottley around Labor Day every year with a few others (it’s about 80-90 miles north of Atlanta). We were planning to meet and check in last Thursday, however, I noticed about 4-5 weeks ago that the Braves were home the night before our meet up and Glass Animals was playing the Roxy theater that night (which is right beside the Braves ballpark). So we jet down to Atlanta a night early.
We left the Braves game around the 4th-5th inning to go to the Roxy theater. There’s a mile long line around the building that we wait in, just to find out when we are walking in that they moved the Glass Animals show to the amphitheater in Alpharetta. Apparently Rod Wave was playing the Roxy, and they still had some balcony tickets but it be a separate purchase.
On the bright side, they let us back into the Braves game and we made last call. I bought the tickets off someone selling on Facebook, so never did get any emails. I found it much more amusing than the wife.

Saw Thurston Moore tonight. He was very good and did some crazy shit with jamming drumsticks between his strings, but once again I am here to complain about whack audience members! There were a lot of people who were clearly there for their First Show Back (one audience member yelled out as much) and a small group of them were either insanely drunk/high or just didn't care about how annoying they were being: it started off with one woman behind talking loudly and saying a lot of dumb shit about Thurston Moore while he was standing on stage about 15 feet away from her soundchecking ("Thurston Moore is just standing on stage right now, doing nothing!!!"), she eventually stopped but not before someone decided to yell "STEVE FUCKING SHELLEY!!!!" over and over again to no reaction from Steve Shelley.
Fortunately, there wasn't a whole lot of talking throughout the show, but somehow over time a couple of people clearly started losing respect for other people's personal space, jumping and moving (not even trying to mosh!) around way too aggressively for a show like this; a couple pushed their way towards the stage, ended up right in front of me, and were clearly wasted, requiring me to grab out for them to prevent them from falling over while they attempted to swing dance (?) multiple times towards the end of the show, resulting in the guy trying to lift his leg up around his girlfriend while trying to hop around, causing them to nearly fall over on top of other people at least five times. Needless to say the experience was not significantly enhance by any of this.
Saw Dr. Dog last week at Pier 17 in NYC. Great show as always. Gonna miss these guys. Got tix for their New Years Eve show in Philly. I’ve seen them a million times but somehow missed them at Roo like 3 times. Such a bummer. I would love to see them on The Farm.
Gonna see Billy Martin in Brooklyn this Saturday. Will report back.
i've only been to phish shows so far but i guess i've been pretty lucky about the people that have ended up near me. zero issues in arkansas, birmingham, or alpharetta. in fact in birmingham i ended up next to one of those really really big dudes who stands silently with his arms folded for the whole show, which effectively blocked me from any nonsense going on around him because nobody fucks with that guy. so shout out to the strong silent types who stand their ground at shows.
in denver it wasn't perfect but not terrible. night two had a guy who was super fucked up and for periods it seemed like he couldn't stand, while sitting he would reach out and touch people's shirts in front of him and mumble something incoherent. anybody who noticed just turned around and gave him a thumbs up. plus there was a security guard nearby who made this guy his personal project and kept an eye on him literally the entire show, asked him a few times if he needed any assistance, but the guy just mumbled and sat there (shout out to that security guard by the way). But then the dude would just pop up and walk completely normally to go to the bathroom or whatever, then come back and sit down and start mumbling and touchin' shirts again. weirdo, drugs are weird i guess.
also had a few chompers around me in denver at times but i just moved. shout out to general admission venues.
my experience was unique, plenty of people bitching about other people at r/phish. like i said i guess i got lucky all things considered. i'm due to be next to some dumb assholes at future shows.

At Julien Baker the other night, there was a young guy screeching and shouting the lyrics so loud that you could barely hear Julien over him. After the first few songs, I politely asked him "hey dude, I love you enthusiasm but do you mind being a little less loud during the music?" He didn't look pleased at all, but did keep it down afterwards. Felt a little bad, but other people were bothered by it too so it did make everybody's experience better.

I also want to point out that as someone who has been to quite a few shows, big and small, since June most people have been very well behaved and if someone is acting up it usually doesn’t affect anything. The only other times it’s been noticeable were at the Wilco/SK show, last night at Thurston Moore, and when I had to step in to stop a fight from happening at a Mountain Goats because a drunk guy decided to try pushing past a guy in the front wearing an ACAB mask lol. Not sure what it is with these Gen X indie guys attracting phenomenally weird people to their shows but it’s a trend!

Screw that guy! You did the right thing 🙌🏻 And everyone’s night was better for it.
Went to the first of four (!) sold out Japanese Breakfast shows in Chicago tonight. If before they were basically a shoegaze band with pop ambitions, today it’s the inverse. And that’s not a diss - the band is now a six piece and the songs are greatly enhanced with the additions of violins, sax, and keyboards, keyboards, keyboards. There was still some loudness, especially in the encore with the build of “Diving Woman”, but to give you a better idea of what the band is doing now, near the end of the set they covered Dolly Parton’s “Here You Come Again”. Honestly, it’s great.
