This thread really surprises me. Sure the Rothbury line-up looks great, but overall I think Roo's is still better, and has more potential to be better. I can't see Rothbury adding many other great acts, but can totally see Roo adding a couple.
Better is a subjective term. Just because you like one better than the other doesn't mean that it is empirically superior. Different strokes for different folks, right?
As far as additions go, Rothbury doesn't need anything else to make me happy. Bonnaroo would have to do some heavy lifting to catch up: Cake Portishead Fatboy Slim Moby BT Sasha & Digweed John Butler Trio Bonde Du Role the Bird and the Bee Thievery Corporation The Roots MMW Les Claypool or Primus Keller Williams STS9 Bassnectar 311 Beth Orton Justice Tiesto Rabbit in the Moon Paul van I am an idiot! [edit] Paul van Dyke - LOL Underworld Led Zeppelin
I'd need to see at least 5 of those added to make me happy. Adding 10 would make Roo a lock. Realistically, I'd be surprised if more than 3 get added.
^^^ I gotta agree with you - but I am going to 'roo anyway - 'roo has my friends and when you add that to the music that is already announced - well - Rothbury cannot beat that

I totally agree. Of course many are going to like Rothbury's more. I'm just suprised by the poll. I love both line-ups myself, but like Roo more. I still plan on going to both, since Roth is only 6 hours from me.

Unfortunately for me, both are 12+ hours away. Attending either means taking at least 2 extra days off for traveling, or doubling my expenses with air fare. As it is, my babysitter situation is tenuous. I don't think she (or my daughter, for that matter) would be up for pulling another weekend.
how much are plane tickets? seems like plane tickets would be cheaper then a 12 hour trip each way with gas prices the way they are. plus if you come from nj to rothbury add another 80 bucks for the pa and oh turnpike tolls.
Must See acts at Rothbury: Phil Lesh & Friends* The Mars Volta Ray LaMontagne DMB Gov't Mule Derek Trucks/Susan Tedeschi* Zappa Plays Zappa
Must See acts at Bonnaroo: Sigur Ros Phil Lesh & Friends* The Allman Brothers Band Derek Trucks/Susan Tedeschi* My Morning Jacket
Well, since two of the artists appear at both festivals, The Mars Volta is at Rothbury, and Rothbury is only a 4 and a half hour drive (Bonnaroo is 10+) I think it's pretty clear which one is for me this year.

The Mars Volta is at Rothbury
Is this 100%? I'm so confused. I've read things about Mars Volta being at both Roo and Roth, but nothing concrete. I really wish they would announce them soon. If not I just might have to do both. I don't think I miss them ???

Someone posted that Jambase said TMV would be at Roo but AC/Superfly has not announced it

Rothbury's lineup is WAY superior. But I'm closer to Manchester so $$$ dictates Roo, I can attend Roo for about $400 cheaper than Rothbury. Coming from southeast Georgia.
There are only three acts in the Bonnaroo lineup that are must sees for you? Wow. It's funny how someone who doesn't like jambands favors the jamband heavy lineup.
I don't really think so: DMB 311 Primus Thievery Corporation Snoop Dogg STS9 Keller Williams Gogol Bordello Medeski Martin and Wood Crystal Method
Out of those 10, only 2 - DMB & Keller - are really jammie... maybe 4 if you stretch it a bit to include Primus and STS9. To be perfectly honest, Widespread Panic, Phil Lesh and Disco Biscuits are on my Really Don't Care list.
[edit] Oh, and just to satisfy anyone's curiosity, here's my Bonnaroo Must Sees: Sigur Ros Gogol Bordello Ben Folds
Don't forget about MMW. They're a jamband. 4, possibly 5 out your top ten ARE jambands. I just find that interesting.
I'm kinda surprised Gov't Mule isn't on your must see list.
Since I'm probably only going to 2 festies this year and I'm already on board for Mountain Jam (where I'll get my Levon fix), I do believe I will be on hand to inaugurate the 1st Rothbury Fest. If APW gets Radiohead I will be there too.

Really? See, I think of them more as jazz (soul jazz, jazz fusion, jazz funk... whatever).
As for Gov't Mule, well... last time I saw them, I was a conflicted man (Flips, Galactic, etc.). I just figured keeping them off the list entirely would help me resolve at least 1 conflict in my schedule, since Murphy's law states they're bound to be playing opposite one of my must-sees.
Bonnaroo: Pearl Jam Jack Johnson Plant & Krauss MMJ Allmans Raconteurs Willie BB Sigur Ros Levon Death Cab Little Feat Mason Jennings
So, for this, Bonnaroo gets my vote (and I buy that ticket tonmorrow). 9 must-sees & ALOT of happy-to-sees at Rothbury really intriguing, though. It looks like there will be so much going on there that weekend.
Really? See, I think of them more as jazz (soul jazz, jazz fusion, jazz funk... whatever).
I've always considered them a jamband. They play jazz. Much like Yonder Mountain String Band plays bluegrass, The Allman Brothers Band plays blues, and The Black Crowes play rock. But they're all jambands, IMO.
Going back to your bang for the buck formula....... There's a factor missing from the calculations. For me at least, but I'm sure there are others who agree, there is the "I've seen it" factor. It's hard to nail down an exact figure, but close enough.
Going by the current lineup, add together how many times you've seen each of the artists. Some judgement calls have to be made about artists playing in different bands. I guess the question is, is it different enough for you to consider it something new?
This is what I came up with:
Bonnaroo 53 Rothbury 114
These were my "bang" figures:
Bonnaroo ***(12)=36 **(14)=28 * (9)=9 Total =73
Rothbury ***(16)=48 **(11)=22 *(50=5 Total = 75
If you take your "bang" (bands you want to see) and subtract your "I've seen it" (bands you have seen), you get your "I get to check out something new" factor.
Bonnaroo 73-53=20
Rothbury 75-114=-39
20 vs -39, If I have to pick just one, it's gonna be Roo. Of course, I'll need to recalculate after Langerado.

LOL.. I see your point. However, I might argue that if you've grown a little weary of a band, moving them down from Must See one or two rungs would have the same effect.
But I know better than to argue with you... you're always right!
P.S., I ran Langerado thru my formula as well, and the $185 ticket price made it a clear winner. However, I'm not sure how to factor in the artist dupes between Langerado and Rothbury. Given that I've seen the Langerado schedule (and know for certain I'd have conflicts) I'd have to plan accordingly, so that I catch all my Must Sees. Of course, as I haven't seen the Rothbury schedule, I'm sure I'll get screwed in the end.
I wouldn't say that I've grown weary, I'm just excited to see some stuff that I've never seen before. Just because I've seen the DMB or the Disco Biscuits more than 20 times, in no way would remove them from my must see list. There is a reason why I've seen them so many times.

See? Why do I try? Won't I ever learn???
Well, you know how much of a festie newb I am.... everything's fairly fresh to me still. But i definitely see your point.
I think there's a lot of new, good talent at 'Roo this year. I've sampled a lot of it, but haven't found that many acts where I think I'd enjoy a full set. For lack of a better term, a lot of the mid-tiers seem pretty 'green' still. But hey, that's one man's opinion.

im liking this "black mountain" album... some tracks are kind of weak though...

im choosing rothbury even though roo is 2.5 hours away and rothbury is 10.5 hours. I like checking out other venues and am just tired of the farm; too many people and too much dust. Also Madison House are more lax on security then Superfly. I like change, just like big summer classic and echo project last year, both were killer fests. And i LIVE in TN, never been to MI. plus: primus , thievery, mike gordon , ymsb W/FISHMAN , Emmit-Nershi, MM, MMW, Panjea, & Sage vs. iron & wine, levon helm, bluegrass allstars, jack johnson, ymsbW/O fishman, baobab & Talib
its too bad i can't afford both but i might sneak into roo this year j/k
it was a hard decision but I'm going with Rothbury ..its only 2 1/2 hours from me so it'll be a much eayer drive ..im going to miss all you great people at the inforoo camp but if your going to rothbury and were at the roo camp last year drop me a line ^.^
