Never thought that after my 1st Roo experience last year I would be ditching it so soon. BUT Rothbury just looks so damn amazing! I have already talked all my friends into making the switch. Also on a side note The Mars Volta was listed as playing there on the website yesterday morning.
i am positive there will be latenights at rothbury. there is no way that lineup has no latenight action. ive never been surer about anything then late nights at rothbury. that just means that their centeroo closes. no biggie. all good does the same and they have latenights.
Rothbury is watered down Bonnaroo for more $$. If anything the overwhelming excitement for that lineup just further underlines the overall watered down nature of the festival scene at the moment...

How is it more $$? The GA ticket price is $245, just like 'Roo. Rothbury's pre-sales are cheaper ($199 vs. $209.50). Lastly, Bonnaroo's service & shipping fees are more ($33+ vs. $19). In fact, you could buy a full price Rothbury ticket and tag on their $7 Green ticket donation and still have $5 more in your pocket at the end of the day.
[edit] And as for VIP's, Rothbury is $150 less and comes with it's own parking spot. Of course, you don't get that lovely creamed corn buffet.....
OK, I will break it down for everyone. Pearl Jam < Dave Matthews Band Metallica > 311 Jack Johnson > John Mayer Kayne West > Snoop Dogg (I don't know rap though) Phil Lesh and Friends > Phil Lesh and Friends My Morning Jack > Primus The Raconteurs < Modest Mouse
I could go on, but Bonnaroo has the better lineup. IMHO
uhhhhhh... ok.... but i would argue that kanye and metallica tell a lot more about the watered down nature of the fesitval scene.
Metallica and Kanye sell out arenas. You might not like what they play, but they're huge in America and even bigger overseas.
Whereas, the Rothbury lineup looks like leftovers from past Bonnaroos with some frat party headliners thrown in. Honestly, 311? John Mayer? Snoop Dogg? Citizen Cope?
Don't get me wrong, there are some top notch jam scene acts in there, but for the $ your paying, there are some downright shitty acts...
Oh well we are doing Bonnaroo - my heart is there - the line up for Rothbury is good but Tennessee is closer to us then Michigan - 7 hour drive and we are there. The music will still be good - there are several bands that I want to see even if I am not totally overjoyed about them.
Bonnaroo will be a good time.
Pssstt - Spooky - I hope you pick Bonanroo but I understand the draw of Rothbury also
well - yeah - I agree with that statement - I had to ask my kids what he sang because I had no clue and after listening - am not interested - will use that as time to chill/nap and get readty for the rest of the night/weekend

I honestly think Snoop is gonna be friggin sweet -side note-I partied with Snoop once
After seeing his video for Sexual Seduction, I can't get the song (or the image of Snoop with a Gerry curl, sequined glove and Casio keyboard) out of my head....

i guess thats what its really all about at roo nowadays anyhow. but britney, eminem, and hannah montana sell out stadiums too. and korn, metallica, fallout boy, and my chemical romance headline fests over seas...... still seems to me that tthats the water down festival scene you speak of.
I say roo, you pay the same amount for more artists, late night shows. this place looks awesome, but its not the same, they have swimming pools? an indoor venue? nice weather? pfft
the only thing i can find is this... in the FAQ's...? you're probably right...
1) WILL 'THE FESTIVAL GROUNDS' BE OPEN 24 HOURS?
No, some areas will go later then others but the main area will close shortly after the last show of the evening.
I guess I take that to mean the main stage (like what stage). But still, after the last show doesn't mean no late nights. The last show could end at 7AM

there might be some bands you think are crappy but like at roo there always another show to catch. atleast at rothbury the crap isnt headlining. i dont think john mayer will actually headline a night. nor will 311. they are just on the top line to sell tickets. although i dont mind john mayer. i just dont want him eating up a night time headline slot when someone else could be melting my face.
id say wsp, dave, and phil are your headliners

But then, Roo isn't about the headliners is it?
Or that's what everyone claimed until Metallica headlined...
Because if you're comparing mid and lower level acts, there really is no comparison. Battles owns the lower third of the Rothbury lineup. There's nothing on the level of Orchestra Baobab at Rothbury. There's nothing as unique as the Bluegrass All Stars. You're not going to see Bela Fleck play three or four different sets at Rothbury. You're not going to see Phil Lesh play two. You're not going to see Levon Helm host a Midnight Ramble. You're not going to get the chance to see all the great comedy acts that Roo is offering this year.
I mean, really, to me the whole what to do about Bonnaroo is about 10 slots on a 120 slot bill not being jam band mainstays that played the fest the first three years becoming a little more mainstream.

understood that why i wrote... you're probably right and (#1) was my only evidence... that's vague to say the least....
ymsb with fishman.sts9, bisco ,panic ,crystal method.mike gordon, mmw modest mouse, members of sci ,keller ,black keys, primus, tea leaf green.wish i could do both.work wont allow it.im going to rothbury
There are only three acts in the Bonnaroo lineup that are must sees for you? Wow. It's funny how someone who doesn't like jambands favors the jamband heavy lineup.
Bonnaroo ***(12)=36 **(14)=28 * (9)=9 Total =73
Rothbury ***(16)=48 **(11)=22 *(50=5 Total = 75
Using your formula it's pretty much a draw. And when I factor in travel costs, Rothbury becomes much more expensive.
For me what it comes down to is that while a lot of my favorite bands are on the Rothbury lineup, I've seen most of them. Some of them dozens of times. I'm really looking forward to checking out some new stuff at Roo.
If I had the time and the money, I'd do both, but that's not an option. I'm going to Roo, and hopefully Allgood too.
for me all fests are about after dark shows. plain and simple, thats what matters. daytime shows are a fun way to wait for nighttime. dont get me wrong i have seen some killer daytime shows. but for me it boils down to night time shows and 3 headliners i could care less to see headline a fest is just too much to deal with. id see PJ or JJ in the daytime. ive seen metallica do one of their biggest shows 8 years ago so ive been there and done that. to each their own i guess. but for me rothbury is the new roo and i seriously doubt roo sells out this year. although roo is drawing an entirely new group of people now days and it will be talked about on every shitass radio station in the country, and all over mtv. have fun with that crowd because thanks to the roo lineup having to deal with fests in every region of the country... lango, waka, allgood, gotv, and 10klf... those radio mtv people will be all thats going. aside from you few diehards.

ditto on every front, there are so many bands i've never seen that i've wanted to see for a long time at bonnaroo this year... Rothbury has all the bands i've seen every summer for the last 8 years or so...
