Its really hard to sum up in one paragraph... like everything else, BM has become different in the last years, (just as some would say the same for roo) but it all centers around 'the man' and at the end everything burns.. its a community, you barter, there is no money on the playa. people create huge art installations, some of which are burned... i can go on for days really - try the wiki page : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burning_man "Because of the variety of goals fostered by participatory attendees, Burning Man does not have a single focus. Features of the event are subject to the participants and include community, artwork, absurdity, decommodification, and revelry. Participation is encouraged, and being a spectator is discouraged.[25] The Burning Man event is governed by the 10 principles of Burning Man, which are radical inclusion, gifting, decommodification, radical self-reliance, radical self-expression, communal effort, civic responsibility, leaving no trace, participation, and immediacy"
satellite image of the playa, that c is the 'festival'
theres no music, other than whats being performed by the fellow burners
theres no "venue" like centeroo with merchants, artists, and arcades, unless the fellow burners provide it
theres no water supplied, nothing...
i think the $250 price is just to prevent EVERYBODY from showing up...
to sum it up: nothing happens at burning man but what the burners make it. which is why they say not to be a spectator. you are supposed to provide the entertainment
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**

My boyfriend recently discovered Burning Man, and we're very excited about it.
It would be impossible to do this year, but next year is a must.
I would love to go with Camp Inforoo- if we can survive Burning man, we can survive anything.
This is going to take atleast a year of planning, because I want to be able to barter with awesome items, and maybe do a workshop and give away items. We were thinking tye-dying white bandanas, because it's a unisex item anyone can use.
A 36 hour drive is going to be tough, and I'm sure a Uhaul would be needed.
Now's not the right time, with school and all, but I want to go to Burning Man at some point before I die. It seems incredibly awesome and life-changing...

PICK ME UP ON YOUR WAY!!! ;D ;D ;D
haha you know I would make a pit-stop for you!! ;D
If I'm really serious about going I'm going to have to get into real shape before next year, because I highly doubt I could survive a week in the desert at this moment.
But going next year would be perfect because I'll be 21 and I don't know what situation I'd be in with school and work, but if there's a will there's definitely a way!

I'd love to go to Burning Man. I went to a regional burn last year about 15 minutes from my house, and will be going back this year. Unbelievable...absolute most loving group of people I've met in my life. The since of community is indescribable. I love the gift economy...people are so helpful. I barely had to feed myself the entire time, everywhere I walked people were offering food, the clothes on their back (literally), and whatever else they had to offer.
And fire poi is just amazing to watch especially after hanging out with Lucy for awhile.
Moved to Reno last fall right before Burning Man and everyone kept asking me and my girlfriend if we were going (apparently we look like the type or something). It's really close and I might go this year. But one thing keeps turning me off: people telling me it will be a "life changing super-intense spiritual awakening." I just want a vacation, not a psuedo-baptism. Maybe I'm a cynical bastard but I just don't buy the spiritual aspect of this fest.
However, I will probably go just to see what the fuss is about (and participate in an orgy woo-hoo!). My contribution will be a putt-putt disc golf course. Since it's a desert I'll have to build some obstacles... suggestions...

well, from what ive read its windy as hell at the playa.
ive played mini golf in aruba, where its always windy. the course there didnt have too much in the way of obstacles, because the wind was an obstacle in itself. id maybe make some high and low spots - maybe a rock here or there, but i wouldnt boter with a windmill or anything. although, it might be cool to make one of those "lighthouse" obstacles, but instead of a lighthouse, it's a huge pyre with the burning man on top.

I have been looking into Burning Man alot lately, won'tbe doing it this year......maybe not next year even I still have one more year of grad school and I usually take classes in the summer, But I still want to keep next year an option ecspecially if we have a camp inforoo type setup. Idioteque karma for the firefly find, that would be a good way to get an idea of what you might see/experience and it isn't too far away......I am def. down with having a serious talk with you guys about it at inforoo brunch
thanks purple. im not sure where i see BM fitting into my life right now either - i mean, i can see going and eperiencing this phenomenon - however, that would be the big "vacation" for the year. it would mean no roo (well, maybe flying in) as it would eat tons of vacation time.

Yeah...that's why it might not be a few years till I am able to go....but I can never tell where I will be in life this time next year...so who knows.......But burning man takes sooooo much planning....I would have to make serious arrangements way in advance to make sure I was able to do it, and do it successfully....we can all still talk about it though cause the theme would have to be badass
I was looking into doing Burning Man this year, but eventually decided on Bonnaroo instead, for a few major reasons: 1) Manchester is a lot closer to me than northwest Nevada. 2) I think Burning Man would require way more preparation than Bonnaroo. I'd really have to train myself mentally, physically, psychologically, etc. to fully enjoy Burning Man. Kudos to those who can pull it off, though. 3) I've been toying around with the idea of Bonnaroo for a few summers now, but I only learned about Burning Man a year ago. 4) Economically speaking, Bonnaroo is a lot more feasible for me. The tickets are about the same, but getting out to Nevada and buying everything I'd need for a week in the desert would end up putting me way in the hole. Plus, while Bonnaroo would take about a week's worth of vacation to get there, see everything and get back, Burning Man would take at least three weeks.
I just couldn't talk myself into it this year, but some year, I will definitely be making the trip to Black Rock City.
