like many of you, as i wind down from bonnaroo 2006, my thoughts inevitably turn to next year and which bands might play. however, i ask you to now imagine even further into the future. to a time when certain bands we know and love will be headling bonnaroo.
my morning jacket. umphrey's mcgee. are there two other bands that better capture the bonnaroo vibe and aesthetic? i don't think it is a coincidence that they both were put in prime friday late night slots this year.
dedicated, grassroots followings, amazing musical skills, and epic songs are among the ingredients of a headliner and mmj and umphrey's have these qualities in spades. i believe each band is on track to headline bonnaroo some year.
but when? i predict that by or on bonnaroo 2011, either my morning jacket or umphrey's mcgee will be a bonnaroo headliner. what say you?
im not into mmj but i agree they ar likely to headline roo in the future. umphreys is definetly gonna end up headlining everything eventually. i cans see umphreys and bisco switching off headline/latenight slots at a lot of future festies. its still early but i could see tea leaf green being a future headliner. some other bands that i think will be coming up quick to better slots are grace potter and the nocturnals. they fucking rock. i also think moonshine still is on their way to much bigger slots. they tore down the troo music thing. i really like smoke stack. they are a locla band in the toledo ann arbor area and they always tear it up. they played summercamp a couple years back and i think they deserve some big festival love.
It would be a dream come true if Umphrey's headlined two nights like Panic has in the past. Thats not likely and to appease everyone else that doesn't like a band to have two nights I would still be so happy to have them headline one night.
i agree man! i idnt like the wsp double hiter but umph would be the greatest thing ever. and on saturday night they should have a mainstage latenight and just let umph/bisco rock us from dusk till dawn at headliner volumes!!!! i think id lose my mind

I think Umphrey's is on course for a headliner spot too. They just need one or two high profile sets to ge them a little more exposure first. MMJ is also clearly heading down that road. I was thinking the same thing about these two bands' carrer map/ They both had blistering 2004 roo sets, and both were prime late night headliners this year. Umphrey's needs a set similar to MMJ's thunderdome set for "legendary" status.
But yeah, these are the two obvious and most deserving choices. I'd say 2008 at the earliest for MMJ and maybe 09 for UM. I look at moe. for a band that has moved up to main stage but not headlining yet. But I don't think moe. has what it takes to be a headliner. Just like String Cheese, they are great main stage off peak time material but not roo headlining material imo.

Oh and I vote for Umphrey's for my personal choice. They are the real deal imo and if they put together a bigger venue tour they will start having umphreak's following them all over the country.
ya i wouldnt be totally surprised to see sting cheese headline roo. i love sci but im not entirely conviced they can do a roo headline. i know i would have taken them for 1 of wsp headline spots. thats for sure.
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**
and john butler. hes honkey donkeyg incredible. hes not a headliner yet but he definetly needs to be at more festies.
John Butler is freakin awsome! I've seen him 3 times in this little club in Indianapolis, and its one of my faviorite shows! If you haven't seen him and you ever get the chance...DO IT! He doesn't play the states to often, so don't miss him if you can!

Here it is...
Friday (Music Legend) - Paul Simon/REM/Bruce Springsteen/David Bowie/Eric Clapton (All good choices) Saturday (Requested Act) - Pearl Jam/Wilco (Likely not big enough yet)/Jay-Z (when will we get a hip hop headliner? he's the biggest name to handle it)/The Flaming Lips Sunday (Jam Band) - Dave Matthews Band/The Allman Brothers
For some reason, I have a feeling we won't see Pearl Jam. Too much hype.
I think a recipe for success would be...
Paul Simon/The Flaming Lips/The Allman Brothers for 2007.
I love JBT, but they're much more suited to the smaller venues. Some of his songs are kinda quiet. His tent show last year was good, but during Peaches and Cream the other tents were bumpin so loud I could barely hear John.
I think we would see SCI headline before Umph or MMJ. And while I really enjoyed the most recent bonnaroo late night experience (especially Dr. John), I don't think any of these shows topped what The Mars Volta did last year. And TMV would never headline bonnaroo. If you look at the stature of this year's headliners, it will be 15 years before UMph or MMJ would be heralded enough to headline a gig the size of bonnaroo, and it may be gone by then...

I think umphreys has a really good live show but I don't think they are headlining material. They can't pull it off like widespread, phil, or cheese. Maybe in a few years but I personally don't think that their jamming abilities can reach peaks like string cheese incident or widespread panic. Cheese w/ peak entertainment would be a sick headliner.
MMJ put on a better show this year than 2 out of the 3 headliners. Although I don't think they can bring as many people in as a headliner needs to in order to satisfy superflys needs.

MMJ and Ump i like both, the land is right, these guys just aren't big enough yet to headline, yeah they are good, yeah they both rock the house, but aren't well enough known to headline, with the roo going for SCI i think would bring a lot of the hardcore hippie elemnet back to the roo, here would be my head liners, David Bowie, or Clapton on Friday, Saturday, go with the Dead, if i could see Phil and Bob and the gang back together that would be great, sunday would be SCI that would sellout the roo in no time
