Hello friends, I like to cook. I assume many of y'all also like to cook. I'm thinking, every Monday we take turns sharing a recipe, then over the course of the week everyone cooks it and reports back how it went. No rules on what recipes are selected, and participants can make any modifications they want to fit their needs and tastes. Anyone interested? Who wants to go first?
I'm probably gonna simplify a few of these steps, but I'm a big J. Kenji Lopez-Alt fan because I've found that his recipes are his idealized versions of things that can be modified however you like. (Also I have a block of tofu in the fridge that I keep forgetting to use so)
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

This turned out incredible! I don't have a wok (or a gas burner) so I had to shallow-fry the tofu in a skillet, but it still turned out quite crisp, at least on the surface. I swapped the shaoxing for mirin, and the bean paste for hoisin, and the sauce was still delicious, if maybe a bit too sweet the way I made it. Overall, very happy with how everything tasted.

ok this week we got the soup. i got this from the slow cooker subreddit and this recipe is posted so often on there it’s simply referred to as The Soup.
couple things: - i have never made it with chicken. i sub in beans, usually navy beans or cannellini beans. - sometimes i’ll make a mirepoix to bulk up on veg. - i don’t make it in a slow cooker. i have one, but for me it’s easier to make it in a pot and be done with it in a halfish hour or so. plus i would prefer to sauté the veg instead of microwaving it. so the first steps for me are: 1. sauté the onions (+ carrot and celery, if using) for 5 or so minutes until soft. 2. add the garlic and sauté for a minute or two. 3. add the tomato paste and flour and cook for another minute or two. 4. add the basil and resume the recipe at step 2.
this COULD be made vegan by using coconut milk + if you’re able to get your hands on vegan tortellini (or maybe even vegan gnocchi)
going out of town later this week so i may not get to it before then. i do have gnocchi in the pantry so i'll definitely make a vegan version of this soon!

i do all my meal planning/shopping on sundays, so i may end up being a few days or a week behind. but I like this because the worst part about cooking for the family is deciding what to cook for the family.

Reading lots of comment sections about The Soup and man is it divisive! I'm sure as fuck not about to microwave onions and flour, and I think I'll sub out the chicken for Italian sausage, maybe kale instead of spinach, and skip the crock pot entirely. Thursday is the only cold day this week so I'll report back then

i know it’s a trope a la New York Times Cooking comments to be like “i swapped the flour for cornmeal and instead of three eggs i used flax seed and i switched out the salt for soy sauce and this was disgusting ❤️” but u can really fuck around with The Soup and it’s still gonna be bussin. as long as you got a green, a pasta type, and tomato like.. that’s the gist

Just got home from a grocery store run for specifically This Meal and forgot to buy kale or spinach so we're getting weird with it and using broccoli 🫣
