A few weeks ago I made an appt at the fanciest salon in town for a cut and color. I only get my hair cut about twice a year and usually color it myself, but I wanted to get prettied up. Tomorrow is my big day and I need to get the most bang for the fancy salon bucks! I initially was just thinking of getting a layered but still long cut. But now I am thinking I may want to try something new to shake these winter blues. Do you like this haircut for me? The color would be similar, maybe a little more frosty blonde.
Just going to start polling you guys whenever I am having a problem making a decision.

I agree. It’s super cute and would look great on you. My question (if I was thinking about it for myself anyway) would be what kind of maintenance does it require, both in terms of day-to-day to make it look like that and in terms of how’s it going to look growing out/are you going to need to get it done more than twice a year going forward? But I am very lazy when it comes to this sort of thing (as in, I sometimes go two years between hair cuts), so I’m always looking for the lowest maintenance option.

As someone who's had a style similar to that cut in the past, I will tell you I had to get it maintained every 6 weeks to not look like a teenage boy who needed a haircut. I eventually grew it out because I couldn't afford the constant maintenance.

Yeah for sure. It looks like it may just need a lil blow out? Which is still too much for me really. But I have wavy hair that gets wavier the less weight it has, so I kind of suspect it may be a weird wavy mess when it is not styled, and that may look cool too? I have some stark white hairs poking up right now that are straight out kinky hair, and I hope so hard that I end up with white hair like my dad, with but a wild curl to it. Gonna let that shit grow out and walk around like a lunatic witchy-hippie mama.
I suppose if it looks really bad unstyled that short, I'm just going to end up putting it up in a shorter, super high-pony like this girl, who is really just me in a child's body anyway, tbh.

not sure what the length of your hair is right now, but keep in mind that if you are going from long to short, and you decide you want to go long again, you'll have to deal with that thing where your hair isn't short anymore but it's not long either, and you'll have to fight the urge to just go get it cut short again.
also echoing what man1cpixiedreamgirl said. i think longer hair requires more day-to-day personal maintenance, but shorter hair requires more frequent professional maintenance.

Or it could be extra cute with the wave and a little bit of product. I have quite a bit of wave in my hair,* and I can sometimes get it to look pretty cute just by putting a little mousse in it and letting it air dry.
*I don’t know if this is something that has just developed as I’ve gotten older or it was always there and I just didn’t understand it. There are some older pictures of me with some serious frizz, but for the most part, my hair has always been pretty flat. It’s both very thin and very fine, so I’ve been pretty excited about the wave because it actually gives it some body.

as someone who sometimes has short hair and sometimes has long hair (depending on my annual mood selection) you are correct in your assessment. This time around on the short hair train ive really been enjoying going to see my barber every month and chatting and getting trimmed up. Prior to this stint I hadn't had a professional haircut in like 4 years.
Had it grown out past my shoulders then shaved my head bald during covid then grew it back out long again. Its been fun though. Caysi washes my short lil hairs and trims my beard and talks to me about whatever I like. And it costs $20. My partner has to pay like $50 for her haircuts and she doesnt even get her beard trimmed! Rip off

Alright cuties! I took the comments about maintenance into consideration and asked for a similarly asymmetric shorter cut, but at a length that will look okay if it grows out for a few months and this is what we came up with! I like it! Thank you for the tips and courage. Hair changes are hard!
Also, kind of excited to go back. I really loved my stylist and the salon was full of ladies and we all talked about “Fall Out Boys” and regular boys and records and the Gossip Girl reboot.

Thank you, babe. Feeling a lot better than when I texted you a week ago. Phew. That was a rough couple of weeks.
Now that I am looking at those two photos, you can see the difference too. That top photo was taken 8 days ago, when I was in the throes of one of the longest depressive episodes I’ve had in years. My girlfriends talked me into going to see their show. I was happy to be out, and felt pretty cute so I took a photo. But my smile is forced, and you can kind of see that and my eyes look less emotive. I started feeling better maybe yesterday? And getting out in the sun today and self-care really made me feel the best I have in weeks. Hoping it sticks and I can get out more this coming week since I am off for 7 days. Some activity and fresh air and a lil bit of sun. I’ll be like new by next week ❤️.
I hope everyone who may also be having a rough winter is hanging in there! It is almost over. Just gotta stick it out for another month or so. I’m rooting for you.
