I am a lover of dreams and schemes. My house is full of the ashes of one plan or another. However 2023 is the time for this ole girl to figure out what she really wants out of this lifetime. So I am trying to decide what may have been a great future that I should have pursued with more fervor vs what was just a pipe dream that is the result of my nature. I would like to enlist my good friends at Inforoo to assist in this process.
I once had a grand plan to open a bakery called "Queen of Tarts". I wanted to open it in a building near a hospital, because hospital folks love to bring treats in for people. I even had this shitty little building across the street from Akron City Hospital that currently houses a tax filing company picked out. I went as far as purchasing fancy cookie presses, cookie cutters, cookbooks etc. It has never gone up for sale and I have not worked on perfecting my craft. It has been at least 17 years since this dream first took seed.
Should I go ahead and give up on this dream and hand these tools off to someone else (via Goodwill or Marketplace)? 100% Yes or No is the only answer. More weird purge questions to come.

Just want to point out that this isn't the only dream we will be voting on. I may have made this sound more romantic than it is. I truly have about 19 instruments, some bakery plans, some Christmast wreath schemes, cheese making, art, roadside firehooping. Bad art. Dozens of analog and instant cameras. We aren't shitting on my one time dream, we are just weighing in on how likely it is to happen so that I can start putting my energy where it matters. Trying to avoid therapy to figure out where I wanna be because I can be talked into logic some of the time. Truth is, if I could figure this shit out on my own I already would have. Just need some actual opinions and guidance. Not 6 years in therapy to figure out why I can't let go of things when I already know why. Love you guys! ROCK THE VOTE!

As someone who also wants to have their own bakery someday, some thoughts: - start with a stall at a local farmers market or something similar. It’s cheaper and keeping your overhead expenses low is key. Renting/buying a brick & mortar storefront is expensive AF and will only drive up your prices. It also helps you establish a client base while working out the kinks in your recipes. - state laws vary, but operating out of your home kitchen let’s you take advantage of your states Cottage Laws. - starting as a market stall also has the advantage of getting to cultivate relationships with local vendors. Think of your favorite farm stall and all their delicious produce. Chances are they’ll work with you on pricing for buying bulk straight from them. A quiche made with eggs from this vendor, dairy from that vendor, all the delicious greens and veggies from another vendor. C’mon, that’s heaven!
There’s more in my brain but it’s doing a reboot currently. I just love baking, especially French pastry, so I’ll enable anyone considering getting deeper into it. Gotta put this baking & pastry degree to use somehow!
This part needs to come first. Even a consistent and talented home cook is going to struggle transitioning to producing in bulk, plus managing costs/waste/time. Consider bringing in someone who has experience.

I agree with this. Maybe give yourself a time frame and let this be your year of exploring your hobbies to see which might transition into money.

A few years ago, a well-established and local favorite bakery/pastry shop closed down, within walking distance of where I was living. The owners put it up for sale because they had trouble finding help and wanted to retire. I looked into buying it, and though they were friendly and willing to help a buyer learn their recipes and whatnot, they were less forthcoming when I wanted to see their books. I knew securing financing would be difficult, at best, and if I had no proof the place was operating at a profit there was little reason to proceed. Somebody else bought it and ran it for a bit but that didn't last long and the shop is now closed.
Most of my previous work experience was managing restaurants, though I'd worked in a donut shop when I was younger and loved the production side of things. Now I'm a bread distributor. No baking, and it's more of a sales and delivery job, but kinda funny how things ended up, and the other more businessy aspects of running my company aren't as difficult as I thought. And there's no excuse for not making money doing what I do, unless you buy a crumby territory to start with, but I still wonder how the bake shop might have worked out for me.
I don't know Akron so well, and I don't know where would be acceptable, but I'd bet there's always room for any sort of bakery somewhere like Hudson or Kent. Rent might be cheaper in Macedonia, which is still a booming area, and convenient for me, haha.

Pastries, cookies, pies and donuts maybe. Cakes are like a whole other beast. I always imagined a place across from a hospital would do well. Some things that I have made for the first time recently that turned out really great but just need some tweaking are Mexican pink sugar cookies and a sugar cookie with Royal icing where the icing actually didn't set hard, but they were possibly the best tasting sugar cookie and icing that I have ever had. I am terrible at decorating however lol. And I am terrible at pie crusts. But all of those things are practice.
That being said. I have to say that I love you motherfuckers. I really started this thread because I was drinking wine that night, cleaning out my kitchen and I need to purge my house of some of the loads of stuff that I have accumulated through the years as I have come up with new dreams and plans and new hobbies that make me happy for a minute but fall to the wayside after a bit. I have trouble letting go of things. Going to start polls as I go room to room. Like "Should I keep these two didgeridoos?. How many plants is the right number of plants to have in your house?(I have like 75). Is it unreasonable to have 11 kettlebells ranging from 5-25lbs when you only kettlebell once a month? Will I ever make these Christmas wreaths and sell them at a Christmas Bizarre?"
But the cookie press and cutters will stick around. The people have spoken. Shit, maybe I will have a bakery.

Oh absolutely. Foot/food fetish oriented. Like just a lady foot in the middle of a lemon meringue pie. It can compliment my festival feet page that I'm want to start. Dirty festival feet. Surely someone will pay for that.
