I started a job at St. Jude this year. My idiot friend asked me to sign up to run the St. Jude half marathon with him in December, and for some stupid reason I agreed. I hate running and I have never run a race longer than a 10k. I haven't run a race in years and years and when I have gone running recently it was never further than 3-5 miles.
For anyone not familiar, it is a hospital on Memphis, TN that is focused on pediatric cancer other catastrophic childhood diseases (brain tumors, leukemia, sickle cell disease, etc.) It takes some of the most difficult cases from around the world. None of the patients at St. Jude have to pay a dime for treatment, and free housing is provided for them and their families while they are receiving in-patient treatment or have to return to the hospital for follow ups, etc. It's a remarkable place for treating and researching childhood diseases. Most of the money comes from donations (and research grants from places like the NIH. a lot of my job is writing research grants and performing said research).

For anyone that makes a donation, I will let you pick a song to put on a playlist that I will listen to while I run the race. For every $25 you can pick another song; i.e, $0-25, 1 song. $25-50, 2 songs, etc. Pick any song(s) you want. I'd prefer not to listen to What's up Pussycat on repeat, but if that's what happens, so be it. I'm not gonna sequence it or anything, just throw it on shuffle and then suffer through 13.1 miles of running through the streets of Memphis. In December.

Run went great!
Ran it in and hour and fifty two minutes. Was hoping to finish in under two, so yay! Especially because there were a lot more hills than on my training course which I wasn't used to.
The playlist was great. My fastest split was when I heard Limp Bizkit back to back. My goal pace almost exactly matched the beat from Blockbuster night. Spiders (kidsmoke) was a great zone out tune.
The course was lined with lots of people cheering, handing out beer and shots, holding up signs for friends and family who are/we're treated at St. Jude. It was a lot of fun and I think the atmosphere really helped push me through. I spent the afternoon on the couch playing video games because I was so achey, and Sunday wasn't much better. My immediate thought is that I'll never do it again ( I've never enjoyed running) but I'm sure next year I'll be convinced to do it again.

I didn’t want to start a new thread, but I’m doing a St. Jude Facebook knitting challenge fundraiser. The challenge is just to knit any project during the month of March, so I’m knitting a blanket for my new nephew. Figured I’d post a link here in case anybody wants to throw a couple dollars towards my goal.
