I guess I'm likely the only person underwhelmed by Sufjan's set. I thought the setlist was pretty weak and his stage show really took away from his style of music. IMO he was trying way too hard to be "artistically weird" and it just wasn't working.
Bring on the hate.
It's understandable that you didn't like it but let me provide a bit of context: The costumes, dancing, imagery, and songs were largely from his Age of Adz album/tour. That album is kinda out of step with the rest of his catalog but it's by far my favorite. Lots of electronics and it's more chaotic than his folksy stuff. It's probably the album of his most suited for an outdoor festival. Also, think of the slot he had. Right before Jack U. I think it would've been near impossible for him to pull off a whispery Carrie & Lowell set in that environment. This is the version of Sufjan I love the most though I may be an outlier in that regard.
I don't think he's trying to be weird so much as he just wants to present a performance that is joyful in every aspect. I was literally giggling when he had that balloon costume on. Plus it took some balls to do a 25 minute song in a 50 minute set (Impossible Soul is maybe my fav song of his so no complaints from me). I really loved it but can see why someone wouldn't if they only know/are into his more mellow songs.
Christmas Unicorn is a good example of him being goofy as hell but still creating a beautiful song:
I really want to experience this version of Sufjan live now. Saw him on his Carrie & Lowell tour. It was a brilliant performance but definitely an entirely different feel. I was wondering how a set from him could fit into the vibe of Coachella, and it all makes sense now.

Thanks for this. I've admittedly never seen him live, so yea, I was definitely expecting something more depressing and mellow since that is what I know from his catalog.
Thought Sia's set was mindblowingly awesome. Heard from a friend who was there that the crowd was incredibly shitty and kind of ruined it live though. Alot of people waiting for Calvin Harris, talking over the music, and trying to push up front.
Either your friend was in a remarkably bad spot, or you're just making this up because you have this weird and uncontrollable fixation on making people dislike Coachella/Goldenvoice because you're obsessed with starfucking the people behind Governor's Ball.
And I say this because I went to Sia after Beach House and the crowd was incredibly into it - and it was pretty free of people solely waiting for Calvin, as far as I can tell. If people were watching Sia while waiting for Calvin, it was more like they enjoyed both, so happened to be at the same stage, because the "need to be at every big EDM show" crowd was absolutely at Flume during Sia.
First, don't really give a shit about Gov Ball vs AEG anymore. Before it was a huge corporation trying to run a local promoter out of business. Now those local promoters made a fuck ton of money (awesome for them), and it's turned into Coke vs Pepsi. It's irrelevant, who cares, it's two billion dollar companies and no stakes. I might even go to Panorama if I can sell off a WayHome ticket and grab a friend or two like I mentioned in that thread. So if anything you just felt the need to respond out of your weird "Everything Coachella is so much better, the water tastes sweeter you guys!" mentality that you've consistently pushed over the years. When in reality, Coachella is the same shit as everything else in a different setting.
Glad you had a good time and enjoyed Sia. My friend got up front for Major Lazer and held the spot for the night and said what I mentioned up there.
So all the special guests and sit ins happen both weekends? Do they discount the second one due to the fact that everyone knows what is going to happen?

Last year about 70% of the sets with guest appearances had guests again the second week. Sometimes they were the same, some times different, sometimes not at all. RTJ had Gangsta Boo both weekends but Zach De La Rocha only came out weekend 1, The Weeknd had Kanye wk2, but I don't think anyone wk1.
There will be fewer guests, but still a bunch with enough variety to keep it interesting.

Drake had the awkward Madonna make out sesh weekend one then Nicki Minaj the second weekend. That would be a negative for going weekend two for me, the lack of surprises. Like the first year they did two weekends, everyone had their cell phones out waiting for the Tupac hologram at the Dr. Dre and Snoop all star Hip hop performance. I get you can use the first weekend to fine tune your schedule. It would just seem like a rerun to me. I guess it's only because of the surprise guest factor at Coachella though, because I actually enjoy weekend 2 of ACL, mainly due to what seems like smaller crowds and what happened the previous weekend isn't as big of news as it is at Coachella.

I guess I'll see when I experience it, but I don't think much was "spoiled" for me. The weirdest guests were all at sets I won't be at anyway, with the exception of maybe Seal at Gallant.

I have seen artists comment that weekend 2 is more about the music. The Sia performance would be the only thing I would really feel was maybe not quite as special the second time around and she could very well have different guest performances. Knowing ahead of time what Sufjan had planned might not be as neat.

on the other hand, I planned on skipping Sufjan for the Last Shadow Puppets since I've seen him and will be seeing him again in July, but there's no way I wanna miss that show now, which is good to know.

To be fair to Launchy, I read much of the same reviews about the overall tone of the crowd. That it was a little too "artsy" for many of those in attendance and that many people "lost interest" in person, began talking over the music and playing on their phones. Ironically, today, I saw an article from the same media outlet that reported that over the weekend saying that it's now a performance that's going to go down as one of Coachella's best, and saying that those in attendance have been raving about it ever since. So it's all with a grain of salt I suppose.
Lucky for you that you got a good spot in the crowd where that wasn't the case, but what Launch is saying isn't totally unfounded or an opinion unique to just his friend. Definitely could have something to do with being up front though, where people are more likely to be camping out for an act and just happen to be there for acts preceding.
I personally loved her performance and don't understand how you couldn't be encapsulated by it in person, but then again I wasn't there, so that's just an observers opinion.

The solution to this is to avoid spoilers and not watching the streams. My brother is going to W2 & he's totally avoided anything Coach related since Friday. When you're not on inforoo or totally immersed in this sort of thing, that's way easier. If I didn't want thing spoiled I'd obviously not join in Couchella Chat & probably just have to avoid FB for the weekend and intermittent week because I follow so many music outlets. (I don't use Twitter, but if I did, that'd be avoided too).

I was also really disappointed by the crowd at Sia. There were large groups of girls around me talking through the set or on their phone the entire show. Having Sia hidden in the shadows really confused a lot of people and they weren't feeling the performance art portion, which I thought was fantastic. This would be an excellent production to see in a tent or on a theater stage. The main stage made it feel just a tad bit too far removed.
Everything at Coachella is amazing. The crowd is full of polite music loving fashionistas who were fully captivated by Sia's set.
For the record, I don't think that everything at Coachella is amazing. There were just as many irritating festival goers as I've encountered at any other festival, and for the most part the Sahara crowd is a goddamn nightmare. I'm just not foolish enough to pretend that it's any worse than any other crowd, because these things are pretty homogeneous these days.
Yeah I completely agree, that was kind of my point from the start and then ya called me out...
Glad your experience at Sia was alot better then many others, it looked amazing on the live stream.
