Again I'm continually amazed at the amount of new music some of you people listen to. When ranking a new album does that include stuff you've only listened to once or twice? I feel like I need to listen to most albums at least three or four times before knowing whether I like it or not. Some are an instant like or dislike, but most need multiple listens. Maybe it's because I can't really listen to a new album while doing something else; if I listen to a new album passively nothing really sticks. I enjoy contemplating lyrics, digesting sonic nuance, etc., and that takes focus.
It depends with me. With AotM voting, I try to give everything that I think I might be interested in a listen before voting. I then give the ones that jump out at me multiple listens just because I want to hear them again and again. If I am making a list that covers a longer time frame, it would be albums that I have listened to numerous times. I am usually doing other things when I listen to anything which comes about mostly as a fix for ADHD. When I was much younger, I figured out that listening to music helps me focus on whatever task at hand that I have as it is really difficult for me to just have focus on one thing at a time.

The year end lists and aotm have pretty much changed my listening habits. I wanted to be able to make legit aoty lists so I started listening to more new music. Now aotm has me doing this all of the time. It's a good thing because I hear a lot of new stuff that I probably wouldn't have and I find lots of things that I like.

Same same. I really like participating in the AotM thread in part because it compels me to listen to albums that I might have otherwise passed up on - either by way of not knowing the artist well enough to seek it out or just not taking the time to investigate into what all is being released in any given month.
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.
No. It's good. The production on it is top notch, and his lyrical content both sounds good and has something to say. I can't say you'll love it, but would be surprised if you thought it was bad.

Though after typing this I scrolled up and realized that this has already been discussed. I just don't have the opportunity to listen to music that much. I live five minutes away from work so I don't get much time in that way, and I can't really listen to music while I'm at work. I listen to music at home, but like I said, even if I'm just aimlessly surfing the web I can't listen to the music well enough to digest it.
I just simply go off of feeling. If i feel like listening to an album a second time, or third, or whatever, I will. Otherwise, i won't pay attention to it again unless it's getting a lot of hype from various sources including here, other message boards, music review sights, etc. Then, I will go back and listen again to see what I am missing. I also create playlists of individual songs from the year that I really like and listen to that on shuffle constantly. Many times a certain song on an album that I've given up on will strike a chord with me, and it forces me to go back and re-listen to the album in a new frame of mind. A perfect example from this year for me would be Father John Misty.

Yea, that's more or less what I do as well. Honestly I mostly listen to stuff I'm pretty sure I'll like, but branch out when I see something get a lot of mentions. I really like getting in-depth with an album and I don't really listen to music as often as a lot of the people on here, so if I'm gonna take the time to sit down and listen to the meaning in the lyrics or the nuance in the sound, I want to know it's going to be worth the effort. Some albums click with me the instant I first hear it (College Dropout, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, Acid Rap), and some are very much growers that I've come to love (An Awesome Wave, Benji, PSYCHIC). The exception is after the Bonnaroo lineup drops. Then I try to listen to at least one full album of almost every artist on the lineup (not including cafe acts); I make a giant playlist and then whittle it down to stuff I know I want to listen to again. This is usually when I discover the most new music.
I think some of it also has to do with the fact that my guitar is almost always next to my computer, and I'll usually stop what I'm doing, play for a few minutes, and then go back to internetting. This results in a lot of paused music with me forgetting to turn it back on.

He's a solid MC, but he's not doing anything I haven't heard before. His lyrical content veers between the standard overtly-profane boasts and downtempo "thoughtful" lyrics, which seems like it's becoming the style de rigeur for young MCs these days. The production is also good, but it sounds like plenty of other stuff that's out. I just don't see what's mindblowing about it. More than anything, I don't understand why it has zero energy. I feel like many of the newer MCs have two speeds, vacillating between hyperactive double-timed "bangers" and syrupy-slow "dark" tracks. There's no inbetween, it's like people have forgotten how to make interesting uptempo tracks. Or shit, just something that makes my head nod at least. Like I said, I don't hate it, there are a few great tracks on here, but it's not standing out to me, especially not in a year that's already seen great releases from Kendrick, Bronson, Bada$$, Raekwon, A$AP Rocky, Czarface, Ghostface, etc.
I couldn't even get through A$AP's album, and syrupy-slow "dark" is how I would have described it. I think I got to Jukebox Joints which was the first track I was actually enjoying a lot, then Kanye dropped the worst verse of his career and I was done. Maybe I'll give it another shot this week.
I get that a lot of people liked it and I tried, but I couldn't stand the new Bronson album. I think my appreciation for him peaked at Blue Chips 1. I'm just kinda bored with him now.

I liked it but I think my expectations were too high because Terry, Easy Rider, and Baby Blue were such fantastic singles. Kind of how I felt about Surf, I was underwhelmed because Sunday Candy set the bar pretty high. Both are good though.

That sounds about like my impression. I was excited for it to come out because Bronson makes fun songs, but making fun songs doesn't make a "mind-blowing" album.
This year has had some great hip-hop releases, but nothing I would say is 10/10.
My immediate response was to say that I'm showing my taste by having Czarface and no Vince Staples, but I honestly haven't gotten to Vince yet. I couldn't tell you if it was good or bad.
I mean, if you have to break it down into simply "good or bad" it's good. I can see why personal tastes will filter out like/dislike though.
My top five so far off the top of my head:
lil ugly mane - third side of tape tallesen - inca gy!be - asunder, sweet and other distress jeff rosenstock - we cool? blanck mass - dumb flesh

I don't know how I missed this reply until just now, but well said. I tend to get a little over excited about new releases. I'm coming back down to earth on it now, though.
I do think it is still one of the better Hip Hop albums of the year. Definitely should be mentioned with those other releases.

Tame Impala - Currents 6. Bop English - Constant Bop 7. Tobias Jesso Jr. - Goon 8. Vince Staples - Summertime '06 9. King Gizzard - Quarters 10. Elvis Depressedly - New Alhambra
This is kind of broken into three tiers for me: Classics that I'll listen to repeatedly for years to come, excellent albums that are worth revisiting periodically, and really good ones that are worth more listens but could possible be shelved for months at a time.
1. Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly 2. Father John Misty - I Love You, Honeybear 3. Tame Impala - Currents
4. Patrick Watson - Love Songs for Robots 5. Panda Bear - Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper 6. Joey Bada$$ - B4.DA.$$ 7. Jamie XX - In Colour
1. Tame Impala - Currents 2. Chemical Brothers - Born in the echoes 3. Jamie XX - In Colour 4. Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfy (I feel like this is gonna slip down as the year goes on) 5. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Quarters 6. Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell 7. Ghostface/Badbadnotgood - Sour Soul (haven't listened enough to put it higher than this) 8. Pond - Man It Feels Like Space Again 9. Blur - Magic Whip 10. Thee Oh Sees 11. Father John Misty - I Love You, Honeybear 12. Shamir - Ratchet 13. Panda Bear - PBVSGR 14. Courtney Barnett - Sometimes I Sit and Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit 15. GY!BE - Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress 16. Titus Andronicus
I could've kept going on and on but I figured it was pointless since I'll probably only make a top 25 at the year end

id swap Courtney Barnett and Tame Impala, but maybe squeeze tame into the top 10, but otherwise, this is pretty close to where my list would be. I really dig Courtney, and it's my Grammy type "make up" in putting her up top.

Though I wouldn't put Courtney that far up, I could see her a couple spots higher. Honestly, most of the top 10 could really go in any order for me. And most of those outside of the top ten are there because I haven't listened to them enough and could all be switched around. The one that I left off, that is possibly my favorite album of the year, is Destroyer's Poison Season (because it's not officially out yet.) But, I listened to it a couple weekends ago while trippin and it was one of the most beautiful album listenings I've ever had (which isn't exactly a fair comparison to regularly listening to albums.
The only one I had up there that I think a lot of people will disagree with is Blur's Magic Whip because it seemed like a lot of people had a hard time getting into that album, but it loved it
I believe that Sufjan Stevens, Kendrick Lamar, Jamie XX, Titus Andronicus, and Kamasi Washington have released truly great albums this year. I love a ton of other stuff this year, but those 5 stand out for me at this point.
1. Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a ButterFly 2. ASAP Rocky - At.Long.Last.ASAP 3. Drake - If You're Reading This It's Too Late (yeah...3 rap albums in the top 3 including Drake sorry) 4. Bully - Feels Like 5. Wavves/Cloud Nothings - No Life For Me 6. Courtney Barnett - Sometimes I Sit and Think, And Sometimes I just Sit 7. Jamie xx - In Colour 8. Tame Impala - Currents 9. The Districts - A Flourish and a Spoil 10. Earl Sweatshirt - I Don't Like Shit, I Don't Go Outside (It could be higher up, but I need to listen to it more)

I'm surprised more people on here haven't talked about that album - I reallllllly liked it.
He's coming to DC and playing at Rock & Roll Hotel second week of February, but I think I will probably have already moved by then :/
Edit: What is this about the picks being paid for? Hmm...interesante.

Did you not see him at Landmark? I stumbled on him before Chvrches and was pretty into him.
And if you're moving to Asheville in March, I'm officially recruiting you for the Big Ears Panda Posse. F*ck what Dave Maynar says.

Nah I didn't see him there because smellycat and I booked the fuck outta there from Alt-J less than halfway through to snag really good spots for CHVRCHES. No time to pass Go, collect $200, check out Ezra, etc etc. Was totally the right call, but I wish I could've seen a bit of his set.
And what does THIS (in bold) mean??!?! Ugh Dave Maynar what unkind things have you said about me this time?
