I've been thinking of making a thread titled "Improve an album by removing one song" for a while and boy, would Fading Frontier work well for that
What the fuck is Leather and Wood even on about?
See I'm the opposite... I hated Leather and Wood at first but after reading the lyrics and listening to it many, many times... it's now my favorite on the album.
On a side note - the Kurt Vile Spotify sessions posted this week is great stuff.
Snakeskin is really good, but yeah, it's tough. Ad Astra would be more reasonable if not for Leather and Wood, too, though it's still got a solid groove to it.
On a sidenote, I don't get people voting for an album to help its positioning in the Album of the Year tourney. You end up being one of 50+ votes so your movement has very little impact in the actual competition when you are only 1 vote. I get voting for an album that has 0 votes so it gets some recognition or new listeners but making sure an album that you kinda liked gets a 13 seed instead of a 15 makes no sense to me.
Definitely agreed with this. I get voting for something if it was your #2 and it doesn't have any votes, for the reasons you mentioned. But beyond that, I don't get it. I almost voted for !!! for that reason, but didn't because All Them Witches stuck with me so muc. So glad to see someone did vote for it.
And somewhat agree with the Fuzz record. It's really good, but it's in need of a little trim from time to time. Perhaps a double LP wasn't the best choice for them this time around.
I was pretty torn. Beach Slang is a little speculative for me - I expect it will be the clear winner before long, even if it and Protomartyr were close.
I just vote for my favorite album of the month. Crazy, right?
But that can very easily change over time. It is easy to be torn between what you are enjoying more now, and what you feel will be more enjoyable in the long run.
I was really feeling that Shopping album for over half the month, but I kind of knew it would be short-lived. Deafheaven took me a little while to warm up to, but it is fast becoming one of my favorite albums of the year.
Protomartyr dominated most of my month, but I was watching a Deerhunter interview when I voted, so I voted for Deerhunter. And because they are my favorite band. HM's Protomartyr FUZZ Wolf Eyes Deafheaven Timmy's Organism Hey Colossus
I honestly couldn't be any happier with a month of music. It was so good, that I only got around to listening to Neon Indian and leaked Oneohtrix Point Never once. I can't wait for next October.

This is one of the first times where I truly disagree with the ATOM choice. That fuzz album rips but I think it was the fifth or sixth best album released this month behind Deafheaven, Beach Slang, Deerhunter, Beach House and maybe Alex G
Second, about two weeks ago they announced their eighth album to come out early next year because they're the most prolific band running right now so why not and apparently it's gonna be heavier than Motorhead and Slayer and "It's unlistenable, essentially." www.abc.net.au/triplej/musicnews/s4337567.htm
I'm here to chime in and say that I think I really regret that I missed chance to vote for the New Raury album that dropped last month and I'm equally surprised that no one else mentioned it. Oh and the Grimes is good.
This new Grimes album is fucking exciting. Definitely my album to beat for November
Best "pop" album I've heard maybe this year
Go listen to Carly Rae a few times and get back to me
Yeah, I mean Carly Rae is decent, but too much just straight-forward pop music for my personal tastes.
I will also say that my original praise for Grimes is still mostly true, but I was pretty high and sleep deprived when I made that post. It's a very good album. But if I'm going to lump Grimes (dream pop/synth pop) into the general pop category, I think Empress Of (dream pop/synth pop) and Julia Holter's (art pop/baroque pop) albums were better.
Anyone else listen to that Maserati album? It wouldn't have beat Fuzz or Deafheaven, but definitely was something I enjoyed and was a top five of the month effort.
I'm kind of sad Protomartyr didn't get any votes last month. Really speaks to how good the new releases were though.
I was actually a little disappointed with the new album. I really thought going into October that it would win, but I still think that "Under Color of Official Right" is a better album.
