Like last year for Friday they had Ryan Adams, band of horses , jimmy cliff, Jenny Lewis. In that order from the top , jimmy cliff played the quad and Jenny Lewis played the fort
Yeah we weren't debating who was going to play what stage, just who's bigger and thus would be placed higher on the lineup
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
Now I almost don't feel bad for skipping Boston Calling
If MMJ is actually headlining Friday at NFF, I'll be golden.
Yeah that would definitely take care of about half of the best acts.
But there are still some non-Newport artists there that I'm excited for. Tame Impala, Beck, and St. Vincent in particular.
Surprisingly enough, I'm more and more excited for Tenacious D... anytime i talk to people who have seen them they say it's a very entertaining show.... Unfortunately, Sunday overall is the worst of the 3 days for me...
And on a side note... Frank Turner at HOB in Boston just went on sale this morning for September... I need to just go ahead and move out there with as many trips as I make.
I wonder if Ryan Montbleau could be at the Fest, he would be fun. Guster is in Cape Cod the weekend after the festival
I would be SO happy. I love Ryan. I've seen him many, many times and will always accept another chance. He's one of my faves! He also played at my friend's wedding a few years ago.

My newport weekend is now starting on wednesday night. Scored front row tickets to neil young and puss n boots. I think i've found heaven
Nice! There's always some good shows that Mon/Tues with artists heading out of Newport to Boston and surrounding areas. Newport "weekend" is really more like 6-7 days!
Yeah I mean the main thing that made last year as good as it was for me was that Jack White and Ryan Adams are two of my favorite artists of all time. Other than that, I think this lineup is fairly comparable, if not better.
There are a fair amount of acts that I haven't really seen yet, which makes me look forward to it even more
Top Acts By Day (in no order):
Friday:
Tallest Man On Earth The Lone Bellow Iron & Wine & Ben Bridwell Hiss Golden Messenger Leon Bridges Watkins Family Hour
Saturday:
The Decemberists Jason Isbell Brandi Carlile Sufjan Stevens Courtney Barnett Sturgill Simpson
Sunday:
First Aid Kit Shakey Graves Lord Huron Blake Mills The Felice Brothers Laura Marling
I will judge negatively anyone who doesn't see Traveller
The bottom of the Saturday lineup is pretty stacked with artists I don't know too well but am also very excited to see. But Traveller might top that list. Along with Nikki Lane
So I just listened to the most recent podcast and they mentioned that the Quad stage on Saturday will have a very distinct, different vibe. I could see Sufjan, Jose Gonzalez, and Courtney Barnett all on there.

In the podcast, in regards to Hip-Hop at Newport: "We've had flat out conversations with some fairly, no I'd say, extremely well known people that are in that world" I NEED TO KNOW WHO THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT!!!
I love the festival and most of the bands being announced, but am I the only one that is not impressed by this years lineup?
Yeah, I'm not quite as excited this year over the lineup. There's some good stuff on the lineup, but nothing is "must see" right now either. There's also a lot I'm not familiar with - or know the name at most.
I will say Friday and Saturday are starting to come together nicely, but Sunday is completely underwhelming right now.
I've been spoiled by having MMJ, Beck, Ryan Adams, and Jack White as headliners the past few years. All are at the top of my favorites list.
I'm in the same boat. I've come to terms with this year's lineup by focusing on the other stuff. There are a TON of small and mid-sized artists that would take me 20 trips to Paradise or Sinclair to see. I'll be able to check them all off in one fantastic weekend.
I'd rather see MMJ at their own show at, say BoA Pavilion, then an 80 minute festival set.

The overall atmosphere does it for me, no matter who is playing. But I'd still like to see an "A-list" artist. My money is still on James Taylor for Sunday.

I really, really like the lineup. It's basically everything I listen to Spotify on a regular basis.
But I think part of the issue is that they've done such a stellar job booking the previous 3 years that they are repeating a lot of artists (and it's fairly predictable). Don't get me wrong, I think this happens with all niche festivals and the acts they're bringing back are all acts that I like. But I feel like this may be why it is missing a "wow" factor.
It also doesn't help that there haven't been too many new indie folk bands climbing through the charts at this moment (like Lumineers, Lord Huron, Lone Bellow, Lake Street Dive, Tune-Yards, Alabama Shakes, Of Monsters and Men, First Aid Kit, etc. in previous years). Sturgill, Bahamas, and Courtney are the only three that really stand out this year in that regard (Shakey still seems to be on an upward trajectory selling out a lot of venues).
Sufjan is a fantastic get. Watkins Family Hour (with Fiona!) is unique. Jose is solid and is on few other festival lineups. The diversity (and Pitchfork cool factor) is also pretty great with J. Mascis, Angel Olsen, and Courtney Barnett.

Didn't Kendrick play the Ottawa Folk Fest one year?
