New album by the Felice Brothers out June 17th.
It’s been three years since the last studio album from The Felice Brothers. “We just wanted to make sure that no one would ever mistake us for a folk band ever again,” jokes James Felice when discussing Celebration, Florida, the group’s dark, twisted synth-heavy 2011 record.
Favorite Waitress, due June 17th, will be a more recognizable return to basics for long-time fans of the upstate New York group. The album was recorded in the winter of 2013 at Mike Mogis and Conor Oberst’s Arc Studios in Omaha, Nebraska.
Favorite Waitress marks the first time the Felice Brothers have recorded in a proper studio outside of their native Hudson Valley, but James Felice says that more than any other record the band has released to date, the group’s debut with record label Dualtone resembles the group’s live sound.
“We realized that we could have these interesting sonic motifs and have weird sounding songs,” says Felice of their last record, “but on Favorite Waitress we really wanted to make sure that we could perform them live. More than anything we’ve ever done, our new record has been the product of the Felice Brothers as a live touring band.”
True to the band’s free-flowing live show, Favorite Waitress features plenty of shared sing-alongs and feel-good harmony, with band members James Felice and Christmas Clapton contributing several songs in addition to primary songwriter Ian Felice. “There’s more collaboration on this album than anything we’ve ever done,” says James Felice. “We’ve been doing this for a long time, and it’s sort of weird to think about, but we’re pros now.”
I've been meaning to make this thread for a while now. My favorite band has a new album coming out and I'm hoping it helps them get more exposure as they definitely deserve it. I'll be writing a LOT about the band and their great songs and variety of styles. Ian Felice is one of the most underrated and unknown songwriters in the industry but they've had some speed bumps along the way of trying to break into the big leagues.
Anyway, if you know the band...awesome. If you don't...i'll be writing a lot about the group and their albums/songs in this thread.

Happy to see that there is a good chunk of open dates around NFF time.
Yea, it would be insane not to have them back. New album + open tour dates + good friends Conor Oberst and Caitilin Rose on the lineup....it just makes sense.
Also, for anyone who was at last year's NFF set....this new album has a lot of the songs they played live as they were still working out the material while recording it. I've got some videos on my youtube page at www.youtube.com/swalmmd
Woo. I lost interest in the Felice Brothers with the release of Celebration, Florida. Glad to see they are returning to the form that I love. I've penciled their Pittsburgh date into my calendar.

We may have already discussed this but if you haven't checked it out already you should get their recent release "God Bless You Amigo" as it's a lot more like earlier stuff than Celebration was.
Happy to see that there is a good chunk of open dates around NFF time.
Don't get your hopes up, unfortunately. While there are open dates around NFF, there is a show in Cambridge, MA earlier in July, which I'm pretty sure signals they aren't playing NFF.

Lame....they could end up being left off hte lineup then. Still seems like a no-brainer with the new album + Conor + Deer Tick after shows (assuming they happen again this year).

I was pretty bummed to see that date.
Ugh, yeah. That would seem to rule them out. I guess I'll have to hope they hit Providence again soon.

Lyrics video for their first single "Cherry Licroice". Cool to see them getting some love on the AVClub website. The new label is definitely pushing them a little more than previous albums/labels.

Some cool news for Ian Felice (lead singer/writer of the Felice brothers). He painted the artwork for Conor Oberst's new album and record store day 7".

Early review of the new album gave it an 8 out of 10:
In the world of alt-country there are those artists who stick to traditional storytelling, instrumentation and playing, mixing that hybrid of country, rock and folk, often with stunning results from tried and tested ingredients. Others, like The Felice Brothers, are prepared to test out new musical waters, evolve and expand their sound. From their early days as very much an authentic sounding Catskill Mountains band they’ve constantly pushed and prodded the genre, trying to find ways to breath new life into old sounds.
Their last official album, 2011’s Celebration, Florida, was their biggest deviation from the country/folk template and it seems that it reinvigorated the band, lightened their mood and encouraged them to chase their muse and deliver Favorite Waitress, one of their finest all-round efforts. Songs like their ode to a favourite confectionary, ‘Cherry Licorice’ may seem superficial at first but it is delivered with such an infectious hook that it is hard to resist. Likewise ‘Lion’ with its rousing fiddle melody proving irresistible.
The strength of the album also lays in the balance that songs like ‘Saturday Night’, the folky funeral march of ‘Constituents’ and the haunting undertones of ‘Chinatown’. The latter with its twists and turns making it a rural American cousin of sorts to something CocoRosie might write. These show the range the band are capable of both in their songwriting and the their compositional creativity. They can do sad and forlorn as convincingly as they do euphoric hoedown. Through it all the constant is Ian Felice’s older-than-his-years dusty croak of a voice. Dylan-esque to a degree it is the icing on the cake of a band that has barely put a foot wrong across nearly a decade of great contemporary Americana releases.

New song from the band being streamed by Paste.

Paste wrote:
The Felice Brothers formed in 2006, and it wasn’t long after that the band caught our attention with their rowdy take on American folk music. Since then, we’ve tagged along to shows and even caught up with the guys at Newport Folk Festival, so naturally we’re pretty excited to hear that their latest album, Favorite Waitress, is set for release this summer.
The album was produced by longtime collaborator Jeremy Backofen, and the release will mark The Felice Brothers’ fifth full-length album as well as their first with Dualtone Records (home of The Lumineers, Guy Glark, and Shovels & Rope). Their goal in recording was to capture the intensity of their renowned live shows, and although we’re just getting a taste of the album with new track “Lion,” the anticipation is sure to continue to grow as we approach the album’s release on June 17. Stream “Lion” in the player above, and check out The Felice Brothers’ upcoming tour dates in the player below.
This is one I've heard live a bunch of times and it gets better each time as they've gotten more comfortable playing it and figuring things out. I've seen Ian play this solo when opening for Conor Oberst and the full band adds another layer to it.
Here's video of them playing the song at Newport Folk last year:
Thanks! Just saw them post about this on twitter. Can't wait. I know half the songs from live shows but the other half are new. Really hope this catches on a little bit. Their new drummer is amazing and they have really amped up some songs at shows because of it.
The new stream sounds great. I really hope they fill out those tour dates with some other shows I have a better chance of making. Nothing even close and the dates I'd normally travel for are personal conflicts. What do you hear ITM? Any rumors about extra dates being added?
^ I'd love a show closer to Raleigh, NC and not have to travel 8-9 hours round trip to Asheville, but if I have to! It's been too long since I've seen The Felice Brothers, and after my first few listens of Favorite Waitress I can't wait much longer!
Overall I think this is their most solid album front to back, even though Celebration, Florida is still my favorite. Wish they had done somethin' with the blank side on the second vinyl though. Still sounds great!
