I've been meaning to make this topic for a while, but I wanted the pre and post BLAM fervor to still a little before I did, so here we go.
I'm running this year's Boston Marathon, on April 21, for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's Marathon Challenge team. We are a team of runners - this year numbering nearly 700, following the tragedies of last year's marathon - that are raising money for innovative basic cancer research.
I ran once before, in 2010, in honor of my dad, who was fighting (and has since beaten) colon cancer. In the interceding years, I volunteered, including last year. I was less than a mile from the finish when shit went south. This year, I have decided that like the Olympics, once every four years is about right (though that may change; more on that in a bit), so I am running again.
This year, while I don't have a family member actively fighting cancer, I do have a new friend who is.
One of the things that DFMC does is partner with the Jimmy Fund. Applicants to the Patient Partner program get paired with a kid who is fighting cancer.
This is a picture of me (looking a fright) and my patient partner Ian (looking mighty fine), who is fighting leukemia.
Ian and his family will be at Mile 25 - right by Fenway Park - when I come rambling through. He has been an incredible source of motivation and energy for me this training season - it's a lot easier to get up and get out and run in subfreezing temperatures when you consider the trials and tribulations he and his family have gone through.
I am posting this to ask for your support, as you are a loving community that I hold near and dear to my heart.
If you are able to make a donation, you can do so hereHERE.
For those of you who do, I am offering a couple nice things - if you donate $20 or more, I will hand-craft you a mixtape for whatever purpose you want, all you have to tell me is a genre or two, or a few bands you enjoy. If you donate $50 or more, I will run the marathon with a ribbon of the appropriate color on my person for your loved one, which I will give to you in person at Bonnaroo (or by mail at any point after the race). All you have to do is tell me their name and what color ribbon is appropriate for the cancer they are fighting/fought.
The donation window technically runs to the end of August, but I would like to get as close to my goal as possible by race day, and if you are of the ribbon-donating level, obviously you want to get that done by April 20!
My initial goal is to raise $7000, which would eclipse my 2010 mark by ~$200. My secondary and tertiary goals are $7500 and $8000.
If you would like to follow my running(/cycling/ellipticaling) exploits, you can do so on Tumblr. Hopefully I will have more photos and less text as the race approaches.

Geez, way to make the rest of feel like jerks. "After I donate my kidney to a friend in need, I'll still make the effort to go Bonnaroo and see all my friends even though I'm not crazy about the lineup this year."
Those of you who donated, if you could check with your employer to see if they will match your donation, that would be excellent
1. The employee visits the online fundraising page of the runner that they are supporting and makes their gift via the secure website. Please save the confirmation email that is sent once the gift is processed! 2. The employee contacts the appropriate department at the company, usually human resources or personnel, for its matching gift form. 3. The employee fills out the “employee” section of the form – leaving the “Institution” section blank, as Dana-Farber must provide and certify all of the “Institution” information. 4. The employee sends the confirmation email and the form to the DFMC office via email (email@example.com) or fax (617) 632-1969. The documents may also be mailed to Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 10 Brookline Place West, 6th Floor, Brookline, MA 02445-7226.
If you haven't donated yet, I would love you forever if you did.
If you donated $50+ and haven't PMed me or posted in this topic the name of the loved one and the appropriate ribbon color, please do so immediately. I will start tagging you tomorrow if you haven't by then.
