This year is the first Bonnaroo for my friend and I and we're so excited. I have been reading a lot of the threads, but am still curious..Would anyone recommend trying groop camping vs. our own area? Is it even feasible/has someone done this?

I definitely recommend groop camping. There will be people on here after the lineup comes out and everything else that will post looking for more people to add to a groop. Its nice because you can show up any time you need too, its not too far away and its a pretty direct shot to centroo so it's really nice for not getting lost since it's your first time. It is like $35 extra I think, but worth it. Has its own portos (they aren't always better and the lines can be bad at times, but other portos are right outside the fence, as are a bunch of other pod amenities like showers, water station, and assuming the setup is the same, the coffee shop and some food is right there as well). Also nice for a first timer to make some new friends who might have been before. Go to some shows with the people from your groop, they can show you around and it'll make it really enjoyable.

There were a good many people on here trying to fill their group for group camping. We nearly joined in with one of them. After walking past group camping multiple times a day last year, I think I'll be joining one of then this year. This will be my 4th year and you will learn pretty quick that its about making new friends as much as it is the music, so group camping with strangers can only help you do that. Like the pervious poster said...as a newbie it will surely help learn your way around.
I forgot i had actually posted this. Thanks for the advice, it seems that it will be four of us heading down and I've almost convinced everyone to do groop camping.
At luvaluva- you're the town over from us! what a small world.. feel free to join us in our attempts to join one

My buddy and I are thinking about doing Groop as well. We both live in Plainfield.

Groop camping really isn't anything special if you're not going with 23+ of personal friends. The proximity might appeal to some but in all honesty not knowing where you're gonna end up camping is actually part of the fun. Groop camping is really awesome for groups of people coming together from all over the country, not unlike my group. We're going to have ~40 people this year and holy man is it a bitch trying to get 12 cars in line together. And then tell the people at the gates that you can't keep going til all your cars are through. Then trying to tell the people directing you to sites that you all need to stay together.
If you're doing it for a guaranteed spot, I say don't do it. Groop camping is fenced off and actually rather isolated from the rest of the campers. It's not a great place to wander around looking to meander through campsites and meet new people, it's going to be full of a bunch of big ass groups of friends who, though are awesome as hell, probably didn't come with the intention of making new friends(which is a bad way to phrase it because everyone's your friend at roo!) simply because there's bound to be a bunch of people with them that they don't see very often throughout the year.

Actually, there is nothing fun about that uncertainty. And there certainly isn't anything fun about being camped a 45 minute walk each way to/from centeroo when you could simply pay $35 to guarantee you're a 15 minute walk. This in and of itself makes Groop worth it. Seriously.
E: Also, with respect to the "personal friends" thing - also totally untrue. Last year we needed to fill our Groop with another like 8-10 people and we found them from Inforoo. My group of friends from the North East had a chance to camp with people from all over the country and establish real relationships with them. It was awesome.

This is hilarious. You're actually making a point in favor of doing Groop. Even if you're all coming from the same town, Groop allows you to arrive whenever you want. The spot is guaranteed. Therefore, you don't need to stress about getting 12 cars in line together, and being parked next to each other. With Groop its guaranteed and if someone has, I don't know - a job - and they can only arrive to the festival on Thursday night...that's cool. The spot is guaranteed and you know you will be parked/camping near your friends.

Completely untrue. Despite there being a fence around Groop, anyone is allowed to enter, so its not like VIP in that sense. And if you're unwilling to "meander" around and say hello to new people - that's your problem.

Yea the way I worded that rant was pretty bad. My point was basically you're going to have fun at Bonnaroo no matter where you camp, that's just a given, but not everyone can be camped close to the entrance. Groop camping is not advertised as "hey! pay some extra money so you don't have to walk as far!" it was created to let large groups of friends camp next to each other. Those spots fill up fast so if you're doing groop camping and not going in a groop(just random people) just so you don't have to walk as far, you're not using it properly and may possibly be taking a spot away from another group of friends who actually want to camp together.
I get that, but if I have a group of 15 friends I think it's fair to find some others to tag along and make it 24. I have friends from Jersey, New York, DC, Chicago, and California as part of my "crew" and I don't think it's fair to preclude us from Groop just because we aren't 24 people.
But in general I agree it would be lame if a group of like 4 people decide to buy a Groop camping spot and take on 20 randoms just so they could have a closer spot bc it would prevent an actual large groups of friends from camping together.
Just wondering if anyone wants to make a SOOPER GROOP!!! We are a groop of about 25 and we didn't get a spot for groop camping. Just thought id see if anybody who DOES have a groop camping spot reserved would be down to let us combine with them?????? Please and thank you =D

How does this work logistically? Is each Groop assigned a lot # that's good for a certain number of cars? And then people coming in I assume have passes or whatever to prove that they belong to that space?
5.5/four tet, daphni b2b floating points, avalon emerson 5.12/neil young 5.19/mannequin pussy 5.21/serpentwithfeet 5.25/hozier 6.12-16/bonnaroo 6.28/goose 6.29/goose 9.17/the national + the war on drugs 9.23/sigur ros 9.27-29/making time 10.17/air
You get one car pass per 3 people in the Groop and a 10x20 space for each parking pass. The Groop leader gets all the parking passes in the mail after the Groop is finalized (usually around Mayish) and he/she mails out the passes to the Groop members.
The last two years I've managed to not use 1-2 passes (bc we average more than 3 persons per car) and we end up having a nice amount of communal space for chairs/tables/etc.
