I've really only discovered the joys of the single malt in recent years, and only know a few friends who also dabble, but are greener than I am. So come talk Scotch with Boner (Irish Whisky is also acceptable, but let's keep it to the aged whiskies at the very least).
Canada imports bourbon from the USA. Canada has rye whiskey I.e. crown royal, Canadian club, 40 creek etc. It's a very delicious type of whiskey that goes well with coke or ginger ale.
We do, I just prefer Scotch. I'm also from Nova Scotia, home of the 1 and only Scotch distillery ( Glen Bretton) that is NOT located in Scotland, I just find scotch more interesting and challenging than any other spirit. Edit: Glen Bretton is not an Official Scotch and not recognized as such, but try it and tell me it's not!

Dont forget Seagrams. But if it's not usually served neat, it doesn't belong in this thread.
Scotch is a straight up drink of manly men I know very few people who drink it regularly even accomplished Whiskey/Whisky and Bourbon drinkers fear to tread there it doe snot mix well with other fluids why? Because it is perfect as is a dry smokey liquid that defies the term liquid more like good bbq that being said I do enjoy a nip of Laphoraig from time to time Johnny Walker is blended shit the bastard offspring of a thousand distilleries Laphoraig is pure unadulterated warmth best enjoyed on a Winter night when it is cold outside start sipping on that during one of those nights and you will see there is truth and a reason to drink it. Good old Single Malt! Slurp! And never do shots of it rol it around let it open up it's many nuances to you it is very complex.

I mostly agree with this, however! I would like to offer up a humble defense of the blend. Most shitty whiskeys tend to be blends, so I can see why they get a bad rap, but there are some very good blends out there if you look hard enough. Throwing all blends under the bus because of Johnny Walker is like saying all American beer sucks because you drank a Budweiser.
Surprisingly, Japan has a really burgeoning whiskey culture at the moment - tons of great stuff coming out of there these days, and Kyoto has a jazz and whiskey bar on seemingly every block. I feel certain "scenes" develop best when nobody is paying attention, and that's exactly what's happening there now. So, umm... please ignore the above statement.

Islays are my favorite, I've neglected Laphoraig thus far, because I can't get away from Lagavulin.
There are some great whiskey/scotch smokehouses in NYC that I've been trying to visit. My friends and I play a game called "down the river" and just start on one end of the scotch display and drink a glass of each, rotating who buys the rounds. We've never made it completely down the river, though, and people usually end up asleep on the bar or something classy like that.

Last time I fell asleep in the bar was after a a trip to Yazoo and a meeting with a friendly board member I left went to the Flying Saucer in Nashville ordered a beer and then passed out on the table during daylight hours my friends had to wake me up and force me to go sleep in the car lest they call the popo's I rallied during my nap and an hour later wound up watching Adventure Club at a show. I have never passed out like that in public I guarantee they could tell I was fucked up nobody orders a beer and passes out without touching it just arriving at a bar.

You really should learn how to hold your craft beer better. In all fairness though I do love getting board member's trashed at Yazoo, trust me you are not the only one....
Getting this in before "Rye Club" is created. To all those who hold Scotch above all else, pledge your allegiance and we will go into battle together. With all these rival clubs popping up everywhere, we need to remind them all WHO WAS HERE FIRST! I would be angry, if I didn't feel so bad for those inferior souls who don't realize what it is they are missing.
(This is me bumping Scotch back to the 1st page of recent threads)
I've recently added McCallan's Amber single malt, and Bowmore 15 year Dark to my collection, and I'm currently binge watching House of Cards as I slowly consume 2 fingers of each scotch I own. It's been a very long time since I've been able to enjoy such pleasures.
I like scotch. I am not wed to it exclusively, but it is good stuff. I like to break it out when we are celebrating, or when we have friends over ... which I guess is another reason for celebration.
8 years ago, I bought a bottle of The Macallan (12) to have after football victories. Given Wake Forest's prowess, I expected that bottle to last well into my retirement. Alas, the Deacs won 11 games that year, 9 the next, and the bottle was nearly gone. It found its way to the back of the closet and the tradition died. This year, we got a new coach at the school, so I had the final few drops from the bottle and went for a new one.
Coach Clawson kicks off this year with a bottle of Lagavulin 16. Hopefully, this bottle has as many titles in it as the previous one.

. That's the one that broke me in, and remains my favourite scotch of them all. I received a bottle for my birthday each of the past 4 years, and it has never lasted past Christmas.
LOL. I had gotten that Macallan thinking it was for special occasions, and limited it to winning game days. Others are not so fortunate. I had received a bottle of Balvenie 12 as a Christmas present from a co-worker years ago. I took it to my in-laws for the holidays, and it was gone when we headed home. Probably a mistake to drink it so fast, but I regret nothing.
In the closet now I have two bottles of The Glenlivet, (18 & 21). Those are both just swell. Could probably stand to do a bit of shopping.

Awesome! I'm glad to see this thread bumped because I must have missed it the first time around. My first encounter with a fine Scotch was a Macallan 18. A friend and I decided we must get seriously drunk since we hadn't seen each other in a couple years.
We knew NOTHING about scotch but he'd heard that's what Neal Pert drinks & it's expensive. O.K...Perfect! So like a couple of complete assholes we each order a Macallan 18. The bar tender asks us "How would you like those?" and we're completely confused by the question. In a glass? On a coaster? Gift Wrapped? We had no clue what exactly he was trying to ask us. It seemed like there was a long interval in which he was staring at us expectantly and we were staring at him in utter bewilderment. Finally he breaks the silence and says patiently "Would you like the scotch served plain or on ice? Or would you like the ice on the side?" We go with the Ice on the Side option because that sounds classy. My friend proceeds to pour the entire glass of scotch over top of his Ice. I being a little more clever drop a couple cubes into my drink and swirl it a bit.
This shit is not cheap and Neal Pert drinks it so I want to know what it tastes like. Instead of just shooting it all back in one swallow I take a sip. Oh what a heavenly sip that was! The complexity of the flavors & the aroma were amazing. I hated, and still pretty much do, the taste of most hard liquors unless heavily diluted in a sugary mixed drink but damn this stuff is amazing!
Since then I've tried a others like Dewar's 12 and Dewar's white label and a brand or two that just didn't move me enough to remember what they were called. At my pay grade a good bottle of scotch is kind of an investment so I usually just ask the bar tender what scotch they got and order something random. I'm gonna keep an eye on this thread for more good scotch suggestions.

What's the difference between Red Label and all this other stuff you are all referring to?
What's the difference between a steak from Friday's and one from the Capital Grille?
dont feed the troll dude. This is coming from the guy who did not understand why or how Pearl Jam attained the fanfare they currently have. I refuse to believe Jimmy is so I cultured that he wouldn't know the difference from average to high end scotch. If that is the case, a simple google search would yield the answer he's looking for.
I knew that Red Label is considered lower end. I was just asking why. Like what actually makes other scotch better. The only scotch I recall drinking is red label once in college

my general understanding is the difference is that JohnnyRed is a "Blended " scotch, using minimal amounts of Peat moss , where Johnny Blue uses much more peat. Johnny Red would be your no name brand of hotdogs, where Johnny Blue is the Filet Mignon. Not to say that the use of peat will automatically make it a better scotch. Blended vs Single Malt plays apart as well, but then again, it depends what it's blended with, type of casks used, how it's aged, ect. I prefer Single Malt, but I would never turn my nose up at a glass of Johnny Blue Label. If the only scotch you've ever tasted is Johnny Walker Red Label, then you have never really tried scotch before, and I'm not trying to sound pretentious there, it's just the truth.
I have recently joined up with some guys from st Augustine and we formed a whiskey society. Called NEAT.
We don't isolate just to scotch, but I have to say that's where I have gravitated in my preference. Like you, Boner, islay is my favorite. Always have a bottle of Ardbeg around.
Fwiw I like Johnny Walker Black, and I also like Rye. Bourbon not so much it's too sweet for me I guess?
At any rate, scotch is pretty damn enjoyable and I have just found this out. Where have I been?
I am a Johnny Walker Black fan. I love it. It's perfect for smoking cigars. Plus it's not so expensive that I can't buy it on the regular
There are few things in life better than Scotch and a cigar. Or a cigar with just about anything, but Scotch is a great pairing.
Not scotch, per se, but this single malt whiskey has been recommended to me. Very highly rated, but a mystery to me. I mentioned that I had never seen it, and was told to try caskers as the on-line place to track some down. I actually got an email that it was in stock and immediately clicked over to see what the damage was going to be if I ordered. Sold out. Immediately.
