I couldn't go last year but my brother did and he made a rookie mistake I can share. After partaking in some mind altering substances the night before he lost his car keys and missed wolfmother cause he had to wait on the locksmith
For me it would be a rookie mistake to SEE wolfmother.
Here's an odd one; I thought one year I'd get all relaxed and not take a watch to Coachella. Well, festivals may be laid back but the one thing they all do is stick to the schedule. I spent all weekend asking people the time or, even weirder, trying to sneak a look at someone's watch without asking.
Take a timepiece!
I was doing the same thing last year! I was constantly asking my sister or someone else what time it was, stealing glances at other's wathes, etc. I will definitely be wearing my watch this year... if I can only find the thing! More Bonnaroo irony! The only time I will wear a watch all year will be at Bonnaroo.
My biggest tip is to sleep Thurs. night. It's a "rookie" mistake that I make every festival, and I'm determined not to screw it up this time. I get so freaking excited that I can't sleep Weds. night, I'm so ecstatic to be there that I don't sleep Thurs. night and then I miss everything after 9 p.m. Fri until the sun bakes me out of my tent Sat.
I will sleep Thurs. night this year!....and you should too
Try to get an extra schedule/program. I like to carry one and hold onto one. The one you are carrying around will get bent/wet/dirty. You might want to be selling yours to the Rock and Roll HoF in 50 years.

What she said! I made the mistake of getting through the gates after dark on Thursday last year, and I discovered that setting up tents in the chaos of BFE being packed in is not as easy as you might think. Plus, we started partying late that night and didn't feel so great as the sun woke us on Friday morning. I recommend getting in early in the afternoon on Thursday, hopefully after you've slept well, and party as hard as you feel like and then you'll be crashing early for sure. By the time the angry sun comes up on Friday morning you should be good to go, in theory.
I also recommend getting a sleep mask, one of those things that people wear over their eyes to sleep. It helped me sleep so much easier than if I didn't have it.
When there is a schedule conflict, make up your mind which act you are going to see and stick with it!
Everytime I have tried to divvy up my attention and attempt to see half of one set and half of another (or even on a few occasions, catch part of 3 or more!), it has basically ruined my enjoyment of either (or any) one. Your mileage may vary, you may be wired differently from me, but this is my gameplan from here on out!
(I will make two exceptions. If I am "just not feeling it", I can leave quickly and go to another set. And of course if one set is shorter than another, it's cool to catch the end of the latter.)
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**
during the day its always good to try to catch shows under the tents in between shows because it gets so hot at the stages, that being said I spent all day at the main stage Saturday camping for the Police and it wasnt that bad

I did not read all of this thread, so I apologize if I'm repeating anything. I guess it just means they are extra important! And I guess I'll throw in some comments too.
When I arrived to Roo at about 6pm Thursday evening, I had not slept since waking up Wednesday morning. I was really nervous about being exhausted, but once I got on the farm I was too damn excited, and I completely forgot about sleep. There were some stretches of interstate where I got dreary (12 hour trip) but other than that, I was fine.
Get to know the area around your campsite really well. This means, more than just seeing the balloon - thousands of people are guiding themselves by the exact same balloon as you. The first night I was lost FOREVER.
Don't drink a lot during the day. Horrible, horrible idea. Like everyone has said: save it for the night shows. Don't stress if you spend some of the day shows lying under a tree just listening to the band - you'll be happy you did this in the end.
If you want to nap for a band (and see one afterwards), sleep in Centeroo. A tent is too "home-like" (if you can imagine that...) and when you wake up, tired as hell, and are faced with the daunting task of walking all the way to Centeroo, waiting in line, standing in a packed crowd waiting for the band, etc, you won't want to do it. And you'll regret it. Also, I went back to my tent, set my phone alarm, ended up rolling on my phone, heating it up so bad it killed the battery, and missed STS9. Just stay in Centeroo.
Talk to people, definitely. Roo-goers are the nicest people you'll ever meet. Seriously.
well, you ask me why i'm drunk all the time it levels my head and eases my mind i just walk along and stroll and sing i see better days and i do better things

Also, bring a camera and take pictures. I can't tell you how much it sucks trying to relive my memories through other people's pictures (as good as they are).

In regards to pictures...the last few years I took the camera and all the pictures...last year I took about 600 pictures and I only had about 3 with me in them..My ex was never capable of maintaining the camera or cared about getting pictures of me...well after 9 years I am rid of him and I will be getting a lot of you to take my picture this year along with everybody else...So pass your camera around to your friends and such so that you are in the pictures too

this^^^the first year - there is only one pic of me and last year there are only two pics of me

^^^Definately! I forgot a camera last year so no pics at all, which sucks! I am always the picture taker anyway and am never in them! Everybody is like "where were you in this pic?" and I am behind the camera!
I plan on taking a kajillion pics. I wanna remeber it all
umm - good luck with that - even with pictures - there are still alot of things I forgot - until someone mentions something about it and I am "Oh yeah...."
had to drive back to mississippi and drive to texas the very next day after bonnaroo last year...
so you should always try and get that extra day off it at all possible.... if you don't you'll miss wilco (even though they aren't even playing this year)
i'm jinxed at seeing wilco, cause i left during the white stripes last year so that i could get back in time for work in texas, and i missed their set at voodoo fest (they were one out of 3 bands i wanted to see there) because i got really sick off something i ate
not bonnaroo but I went to another festival and we packed the car up with all types of stuff we didnt need. It was packed so tight that when we got to going home we couldnt fit it all in properly. Now days I travel lite!
The biggest rookie mistake that someone can make is not reading this forum, or talking to 'Roo veterans, before going. Unfortunately, we can't help those poor folks.
if your campsite is more than a 25 minute walk to centroo consider packing a backpack with everything you'll need at night and spending the entire day at centeroo. find a some shade for an afternoon nap if you need one. i missed a lot of the friday/saturday bands i wanted to see last year because i spent too much time walking to and from the festival. i backpacked it on sunday, got to see all the acts i wanted to, took a little nap during Feist and still had lots of energy for WP.

woo just got my camelbak delivered. how many days leftnow? lol it will help with water and the what the above poster was talking about. it has a lot more storage room than i expected but thats a good thing. next its shelter and shoes
First year mistake... picked up what I thought was my tent from my dad's house. Trusting myself and knowing that I put the thing away correctly and not having the time to... I didn't set it up before hand. We ended up with a crummy little tent that belonged to my dad and not my tent. Big grrr, but turned out okay. The tent didn't leak. Second first year mistake... not having a camelbak. I didn't even know what they were.
Second year mistake (o6), me waiting at the What Stage while my fiance went to get food. We were pretty close up and he couldn't get back through the crowd to me when Bright Eyes started playing. I didn't have my cell phone and we didn't have a meeting plan. I ended up dragging around both our packs and crying. I finally found someone to borrow their cell phone and I left him a voice mail telling him where I would be waiting. We found each other, but I missed Death Cab because of it. There is nothing like the fear that comes when you realize you've lost a loved one in a crowd of 80,000 people.

don't let this happen to you... have a pre-determined meeting place in case of seperation
if you do get split up, just enjoy the music, nothing bad happens to anyone at ROO, you'll see them in the morning at the tent!
