Most know The Lumineers for “Ho Hey”, a feel-good tune that invokes some foot tapping at a minimum. However, the band’s beginning was anything but feel-good. Schultz and Fraites, natives of New Jersey, joined forces when Fraites’ brother/Schultz’s best friend died of a NO NO WORD!!! overdose in 2002. Making music together became their therapy. After experimenting with a wide variety of genres, the duo began to focus less on wordy lyrics and overwhelming instrumentation and more on simplicity and melody (better to do simplicity well than complexity on a mediocre level). Needing a change of scenery, they landed in Denver, Colorado, where they placed a Craigslist ad for a cellist. That is how Pekarek came on board. Regulars on the open mic scene, house shows, and do-it-yourself spaces, The Lumineers stomped and chanted their way into a record deal with Dualtone and subsequently, into the hearts of music lovers everywhere.

I know I'm biased – I wound up front row at one of their first sold out shows last year and actually got on stage! I love what they are about – simplicity and melodies.
I’ve had people tell me that they are sellouts, but at the end of the day, they are talented musicians, and I will always respect that. I love the grit in Schultz’s voice,
the depth of Pekarek’s voice, and I can’t help but view Fraites as a “little brother” type.
Songs from their Album
Ho Hey & Big Parade Take Away Show
Flowers in Your Hair
Slow It Down
Untitled New Song (Some are calling it Love, Love, Love)
I got the Lumineers album just off of my liking of Ho Hey and it really caught me off guard with how good it was. Stubborn Love, Dead Sea, and Big Parade are songs I could listen too over and over again without getting tired of them. Very excited to see them live!
