Let's do it. Try, if you will, to ignore the glaring fact that the best metal records have already been released (Maiden's entire '80s catalog) and talk about your favorite metal. From classics to current stuff.
I'm listening to Diamond Head's Lightning To The Nations for the first time and it is incredibly badass.
They'll get some good stuff, I'm sure. I've seen some amazing metal on the farm. One of the best decisions I've made at Roo was staying in the metal tent all day to see Kylesa, The Sword and Opeth. You should have seen the look of fear on awolfatthedoor's face when he walked into Opeth. Not to mention Isis was one of the best shows I've ever seen. Have faith, Dave.
I had no idea that they did the score to that film. I'm always down for some more Mastodon so I'll have to check that out.
Lately I've been trying to get a more complete grasp on the early days of metal. It's been fun to go back and revisit a lot of the bands that I had dismissed as a kid for not being able to get out of my Maiden bubble. I'm finding a lot of music that I won't necessarily put on the same pedestal as them (to me no band has combined heaviness, accessibility, atmosphere, and virtuosity quite as well), but plenty that I will revisit many times. It's so interesting to hear how long metal has come, how bands have come to redefine what it means to be "heavy."
Can anyone offer some guidance into where to start with metal? I liked Mastodon - The Hunter, and Baroness - Blue Record (not really metal I know), and didn't like Opeth - Damnation (the vocals didn't do it for me), but I'm pretty unsure about where to go from here.

^This.
I strayed away from metal for a couple years. I've been itching for some good metal lately, just don't know where to start really. I listened to Converge's latest record, based off what everyone has said on here, loved that record.

There are bigger metal heads here than me, but since I also like Mastodon and Baroness and am not a huge fan of Opeth, I'll take a stab. I'd try The Sword - start with Gods of the Earth. Good old D&D metal. I'd also try Converge - I really liked their album that came out last year. And Kylesa, their self-titled one. If I recall, I think a lot of metal fans here aren't big on Kylesa, but I dig them. Have you listened to the Inter Arma album that just came out? It's my favorite metal record so far this year.
Not really huge on metal, but some of the milestones are among my favorites:
The first 6 Black Sabbath albums are untouchable. Period. Vol. 4 and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath are two of my top 3 metal albums ever. Metallica's entire 80s output is great. And Justice For All is the other of the top 3. Love the original Rubin/Slayer Trilogy, especially South Of Heaven. Dig a good bit of Mercyful Fate's earlier stuff. Oh, and Mastodon is the best metal band of the last decade that I've heard. Not huge on The Hunter, but the preceding three (especially Crack The Skye) are great.
Sorry as I am to say, Zapp, I never have been able to get into Iron Maiden... or Judas Priest. I like some NWOBHM, but most of it doesn't seem to stick with me. I think Mercyful Fate is what I like most of that.

Haven't listened to Inter Arma yet, the prospect of metal scared me off a bit. That said, I'm snagging Gods of The Earth and Sky Burial right now. Will give these a proper listening tonight.

Yeah well, Sabbath is the king of kings. I was thinking more contemporary, but all-time, yes, Sabbath is #1. And I'll have to side with Zapp on this one - Iron Maiden is #2.

idk if its considered "metal" but I've always wanted to see Russian Circles on the farm. I'm not sure if they've ever been there? But I feel as if their show would be epic at Roo

I don't think he's ready for BTBAM yet. on second thought, no one is...the first time they hear it. Colors is one of the greatest albums made in the last decade.

Tool is hands down my favorite band. The things they do make their songs entertaining, enthralling, and interesting no matter how many times you've heard them.

I don't like Tool anywhere near as much as I did 6 or 7 years ago... I pretty much stopped listening to them, it's still definitely good for the most part, but what I used to get out of Tool's music, I get elsewhere now.
