"The reason that ecstasy, specifically, is associated with raves more than other NO NO WORD!!! is because of the integral part it has in building the rave culture" - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rave
I can't believe i'm actually having to argue that ecstasy birthed EDM and the rave culture. I thought that was just common sense.
Do you think it was just coincidence that the rise of electronic music and the rise of a certain substance happened to occur together? I was overly broad in saying that EDM "wouldn't exist" without it...obviously EDM would have arisen regardless, but not in the same manner and style that it did.
I'm just saying the scene is heavily influenced by the substance...not that you can't appreciate it without it. I know many people that don't partake but love going to EDM shows...but to act like molly is some tarnish on EDM's reputation when it essentially birthed EDM is just frustrating to me.
Lol the rise of EDM has nothing to do with the molly and everything to do with the crossover from EDM into pop music and the massive exposure EDM gains from it.
You're misunderstanding me. I'm not talking about the recent surge of EDM into the mainstream...i'm talking about the birth of EDM decades ago.

No. The gay club scene birthed EDM.
If you want to deny that E had a large influence on rave culture go ahead...i'm done with this argument. The main point I had in all this was that I hate when people like Deadmau5 try to demonize E's association with EDM culture when it has always had a powerful impact on the culture and is the reason the culture exists in the form we see it today.
You're free to hate on E, you're free to not use it, you're free to appreciate EDM without it, but you can't deny its role.

It doesn't have everything to do with it, but it DEFINITELY doesn't have nothing to do with it.
I will say there is some EDM that only sounds good on molly.
So then what's the point?
This is outside of the EDM world but Spiritualized makes some of the druggiest music around, hell J Spaceman's put together Music To Take Drugs To when he was with Spacemen 3, but you don't need to be on anything to appreciate it.

Let me say as a child of the mid 90's it had a LOT to do with it in my opinion. At the risk of breaking inforoo guidelines I would like to say that L had more than a little to do with it as well from what I remember. Certainly it was not all of it, but it was a undeniable part of the culture back then.
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.
I'm sorry, but people who get offended that most people associated EDM & E need to have a reality check. Walk around a Bassnectar or Deadmau5 show and check how many people are on NO NO WORD!!! or looking for/selling NO NO WORD!!!...that is why people associate the two.
You don't do it at shows? Good for you, we need more people like you. But there are also sober people at frat parties but no one really notices.
molly is to EDM as coke was to disco. It's just part of the scene.
There is no need to be offended or even argue against the fact that molly has VERY close ties to EDM. Would EDM exist without molly? Probably, but not in the way it does now. And you can bet your sweet ass that Bassnectar, Pretty Lights, Deadmau5, Skrillex, and lots of others wouldn't be anywhere near as popular if it wasn't for the effect the drukq has on people at those shows.
You don't do molly? That's swell. I don't either, at least not in a few years. But to deny its relevancy to EDM is silly.

Pretty much exactly what I said a page ago, and its nice to finally have some backup on this painfully obvious fact that shouldn't even be an argument.
I've had some pretty powerful experiences at the two skrillex shows I've been to. and it's totally fine with me that people don't like skrillex. I'm also a Phish fan so I have plenty of experience listening to people hate on a band that I have a strong emotional and spiritual connection with.
I'll also insert the obligatory I've been sober for both those shows etc.
and if we really want to talk about where EDM comes from we have to take it back to the tribal rhythms of Africa, which come from emulating the beating of the human heart, which was brought to America to Congo square in new orleans.
Another point: EDM could exist without molly, but how many people would go see Pretty Lights if they couldn't roll balls while doing so? Most of said artists wouldn't be big enough to play your local rave.
And it's not a bad thing. I could care less. Most good music is the product of a lot of drugs. My favorite band is the Grateful Dead; most people would assume I'm a pot head and I don't get mad because it's an accurate assumption (although I am not).

wow this argument is dumb. pretty lights is very hip hop oriented so i think he could pull a big crowd so bad example. hopefully when i check back in a few days it will be back to skrillex hate
so for me to enjoy sphongle and be part of the scene i should start banging heroin?
That's not what anyone is saying.
No you don't have to be on drukqs to enjoy a Shpongle show or any EDM show. And you can be a raver without ever doing E.
Drukqs (pertaining to live music) are meant to be an enhancement, as in complimentary. Not supplementary. But lots of people get carried away, and use it all the time in all live music scenes to the point where its (imo) fucking annoying as balls.
But its there. And it almost always is. It IS part of the scene, whether you use it or like it or not. And given on how amazeballs it makes most people feel and how easy it is to find in those scenes and at those shows with the thwopin bass and crazy ass light show, credit is definitely given to why the euphoric-feeling from being on molly to why EDM is so damn popular amongst young people.
you are right, nicthedic. This argument is dumb, namely because it shouldn't have to be argued.

All that being said bassnectar last night in birmingham was good show but crowd sucked. I swear atleast 70% was in High school. Glad its not like this for Bonnaroo. Parents more willing to let kids do a 1 nighter and not a festival.

That's the thing I hate about going to EDM shows. It feels weird going to shows that are mainly comprised of messed up high-schoolers. Ruins the atmosphere for me...its one of the main reasons I won't return to Ultra again.

Just seems lately it has been like that. The bassnectar shows I went to in 2010 this wasn't a problem. I guess I am going to only go to shows that are at 18+ venues for EDM.
