Apparently it is going to be one of those mornings at work.
If you thought soon to be Doctors would be smarter than the average idiot college student, their ability to find the biggest meeting room in the building with a giant sign telling them where to go in front of their face implies they are just as stupid as everyone else.

Soon to be Medical doctors or just Ph.D. candidates? Not that it really makes a difference.

Medical, they are here for the College of Medicines new Residents orientation.
What's even scarier is the legal precedent it sets. I have a feeling a lot more of these cases are going to be popping up now and today's decision makes it much easier for the wrong decision to be made in those.

Hey, I had to attend new resident orientation today as well. I'm covering it for the Louisville Medical Society though, I'm not a resident.
Does it annoy anyone else that when you have a fan on low, you usually have to turn it past the high function - and making it really loud and blowy for a second - in order to turn it off?
Reminds me of my stove at home. The settings go: HI, 2, 3, LO, OFF. Idk which genius came up with that one, but they need a new career.

The weirdest thing is they still need to figure out if corporations can have religious beliefs. The little I've read is that it's mostly smaller businesses as of right now but you know the big companies want in too. Corporations. With a religion. WTF
Pretty bummed out by the SCOTUS today. Shitty day for women.
Shitty day for america. Just wait until companies start objecting to providing coverage for vaccinations (or whatever else they can think of) b/c of religious beliefs...

Ya I foresee corporations using religion as an excuse for cheaper insurance that covers less.

At the end of the day a corporation is an assembly of shareholders and employees (see: humans). Not so crazy for a group of people to have a religious affiliation.

This ruling is for corporations
A federal judge has estimated that a third of Americans are not subject to the requirement that their employers provide coverage for contraceptives. Small employers need not offer health coverage at all; religious employers like churches are exempt; religiously affiliated groups may claim an exemption; and some insurance plans that had not previously offered the coverage are grandfathered in.
But the administration said that for-profit corporations like Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood must comply with the law or face fines.
The cases are Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores, No. 13-354, and Conestoga Wood Specialties v. Burwell, No. 13-356.

I am oblivious to law especially in healthcare. What about a person in a coma being kept alive by machines?
Some religions don't believe in blood transfusions.
I don't think either of those things would ever see this kind of ruling, but that makes it worse in my eyes. Why is it only women's reproductive health rights that are constantly on the bargaining table?
I think it's pretty crappy for any party to want to make choices for people based on that party's religious belief.
That being said, if you feel strongly about an issue, why would you want to work for a corporation whose behavior conflicts with your stance on said issue?
Don't get sick if you work for a Christian Scientist.

I was thinking that at first, but times are hard, I'm sure Hobby Lobby employs lots of people that would love to have a different job. Plus it puts the blame on the wrong party.
I just said this on Facebook and I'll say it here. With the economy what it is, there are many people out there who are having to settle for whatever they can get... Oral contraceptives have so many other practical medical uses other than just preventing pregnancy. They are used for acne, dysfunctional bleeding, etc...
It's kinda weird. Most people seem to become more conservative as they age. I don't seem to fit that mold

It's probably the simplest construction. I know you guys dont care, but each click is probably adding resistance which is easier to do functionally than lowering resistance. The higher the resistance, the slower the spin. Or something.

I agree with what Justice Ginsberg said on the matter:
"Religious organizations exist to foster the interests of persons subscribing to the same religious faith. Not so of for-profit corporations. Workers who sustain the operations of those corporations commonly are not drawn from one religious community."

It's some right now but when I originally read this post from someone on Reddit I guess I misread it and thought it was only for smaller companies....not companies that have a small number of people in control.
Apparently the decision only applies to closely held corporations, that is, corporations where at least 50% of the stock is owned by 5 or fewer people.
Still shitty. Though, someone has pointed out that the official decision may just be towards contraception AFTER fertilization (like the morning after pill) as opposed to all forms of contraception. Not sure if that's definitely the case but if so that's at least a little bit better. Still shitty.
So many fertilizations don't result in uterine implantation, and therefore viable pregnancies anyway. The morning after pill just prevents implantation. I've given it out many a time. And I can assure you, I'm no baby killer.

I guess that is where we agree to disagree. I believe everyone should have the chance to be a butthole and show it to the world - that way we can all point and say "What a Butthole!".
The people that then work for the Butthole justify making the Butthole more wealthy in their own private way. Or, you don't work for the Butthole. How important is it for you to not help the Butthole with your labors? Are you willing to work less appealing hours doing less appealing things, maybe in a new geographical area for potentially less money? How much does the Butthole's behavior bother you?
Butthole tolerance level is a personal choice that I would rather not see legislated, or in this case, adjudicated.
At the end of the day it comes down to this. Your employer is able to make a decision about what kind of medical care you can receive. That seems pretty fucked up to me.

Playing devil's advocate but that's kind of similar to some situations already.
My employer gives us two choices of health care plans and they choose not to include dental insurance and some other basic options. I know it's not the same as contraception but I've definitely felt the sting of my employer making decisions about the medical care they cover. But at least when they do it they don't claim it's for any religious reasons or some other silly reason. It's about cost and budget and things like that.
I don't know much about this all...just catching up on it today. So weird though. Not looking forward to the fallout.
