"Do you really think those rookies are gonna be more exciting than me?"
I'd love to see OFWGKTA, and I'm going to at Pitchfork, but there are still several artists on the Roo lineup I'd rather have on the lineup than Odd Future--Arcade Fire, The Strokes, Buffalo Springfield, MMJ, The Black Keys, even Explosions in the Sky.
I love OF just as much as the next guy, just sayin'--let's not get too carried away by the hype.
odd future is riding a huge wave of hivemind right now. i don't get it. caught their sxsw show at fader fort last night, thought they came off as a bunch of entitled teenage pricks, really left a sour vibe to an otherwise awesome week

Agreed. Although there show was a great time, they in no way would ever out perform the majority of those listed above (in fact !!!, James Blake, and Death From Above 1979 easily exceeded the Odd Future set).
But I say get lost in the hype (if only for a short while). They are so different, so new, and so refreshing.
And for those of you who are still anti-Eminem, yet pro-OFWGKTA: I say reevaluate what he has done in the past, because the influence he has had on Tyler's lyrics is quite evident...

Tyler's tone is jokier than Eminem's ever was. That's the difference to me.
I agree with you that it's okay to get a little lost in the hype. They definitely are pretty refreshing/different. I'm just saying I wouldn't personally jump to saying I'd be more excited to see them than Buffalo Springfield or Arcade Fire or MMJ, etc.

The difference for me is I've seen most of the bands people are hyped about or I don't care for them. I'd much rather see an OF show than a Black Keys show that would probably be almost the same as last time. The strokes put out an album I'm not excited to see. I could down the line. As for em I just don't like his music as much. I don't have some moral difference with him.Sure I'd rather see Neil and crazy horse, macca or Radiohead but they aren't touring, so I stand by what I said.

Thats why I said there were a "select few" that I wouldnt drop for Odd Future. Neil and Buffalo Springfield included. I gave it a good hard look and the only acts I wouldnt drop for Odd Future right now would be Buffalo Springfield, MMJ, Robert Plant, EitS, Dr John/Meters and Big Boi. Im not getting too carried away by the hype, theyre just truly one of the most interesting and talented groups on the rise right now and I would rather see them than 95% of the current pool of touring artists.

I think a big part of it is how exciting they happen to be right now. They're bringing so much intensity to their shows currently it can't sustain itself forever, I mean, have you guys seen this?

These guys who certainly be a huge get for Roo given their rising status and I imagine that tent would be quacking packed. Are they currently free around that weekend?

Their agent has them in Australia after Spain. Not sure how solid that is, though.

So we have more or less missed the boat on these guys. There is a good chance that they will be yesterdays news by the time they start booking for Roo 2012.

There's an equally good chance that they will be bigger by then.
People are obviously wanting it again, I saw that first hand with what went down at the DFA 79 show last night. Culture repeats itself every few years, so all of that angry music is currently making it's way back and in my opinion these guys are breaking at the perfect time.

I'm not hugely familiar with OFWGKTA, so i'm not sure if this article is just painting them in a bad light, but from this i'm not that interested in seeing them live.

Besides what you saw first hand....how is it obvious people want pissed off music? Just curious....because I don't feel that way.
Has everything to do with what I saw first hand. Go see Odd Future and DFA 79 at a small club or anywhere for that matter and I promise you'll feel differently.
By the way, everyone stood still during Deer Tick so no need to worry just yet...
And from what my friend, who was there, told me the article matches up with what went down. He said the sound was pretty terrible and most of the crowd didn't even seem to be very big fans.

Was just asking a question. To me, I thought your post made it seem like you saw two shows and declared that angry/pissed-off music was making it's way back and that soon there would be a ton of it everywhere.
I was just wondering if there were other examples of why you felt that way or if it was just the two shows you were at.
If someone else went to a happy, upbeat show from like She & Him or Vampire Weekend or something and the fans were all really into it......that wouldn't mean that all happy and upbeat music is going to take over. It was just the atmosphere of the show.
Just asking a question.

Calm. From what I experienced at SXSW this year, happy indie rock (which is one of my favorite types of music) didn't reign king. It was all about the heavy/angry/aggressive stuff. SXSW is what's to come, therefore I'd expect more people to go in that direction. There were at least 10 happy/indie bands at each Austin bar, daily. No one was breaking down sh!t to get into those shows, in fact many were empty. The Odd Future and DFA shows were something else entirely. Something new.
And no I didn't say everyone is going in that direction (there were obviously more people at Bright Eyes than both of those shows combined), but many people are...
Here's an article explaining the walkout at the Billboard show the other night:
And from what my friend, who was there, told me the article matches up with what went down. He said the sound was pretty terrible and most of the crowd didn't even seem to be very big fans.
My experience was pretty much the same. My girlfriend was ready to leave after the second song because the sound was so awful. Tyler wouldn't take the stage and began cussing out the sound man, even saying "This sh!t is to low, turn our vocals in the monitors all of the way up", not realizing that the vocals were bleeding through the monitors. At times they would stop rapping entirely and all 5 or 6 on stage began chanting "wolf gang" only making the music that much more difficult to hear. Many people weren't big fans, a large majority were being exposed to them for the first time and were only their because all of the hype surrounding their performance (which is often the case at sxsw). I did see multiple ski masks and many "fuck steve harvey" shirts so they do have a following and it will only grow stronger (especially when it hits the younger crowd).
Their performance was very amateur and what I'd expect from a bunch of entitled teenagers performing with small time Austin production companies.
With all of that said, Tyler is a star and he shines (he connects with his audience and works it well). I'm anxious to see them at 'chella, they have the best system of anyone in my opinion and the professionals who run sound for that festival will not let OFWGKTA control the show.

OF is new, DFA 1979 is nothing new. They're playing an album that's seven years old.
To half of us there it was 7 years old and a very special night for that matter, but the others seemed to be experiencing it all for the first time. That seemed to be the case at many shows I went to over the weekend, lots of newbies. But they seemed more into just being there and being seen than actually enjoying the music.

jones - did you happen to catch Diddy proclaiming Odd Future as the future of hip hop? I think it was at some other show but just reading about it now.

lol look how happy he looks.
DFA was during Diddy, so I missed that one. Awesome picture, I'm sure those guys were living it up the entire week.
