I agree that much of the brutality comes from some kind of emotional investment in the characters rather than what is actually shown (if you want to see brutality, watch Spartacus). For example, the Theon and Rodrick scene. You don't see the actual sword strokes, but you feel terrible because you can tell that Theon really didn't want to do it.
Same thing with the amputation. They don't show it but the whole idea and the noise it makes was excruciating. I liked that they focused on Theon's face during the decapitation too. That was cool.

Also, have yall noticed that they never show any battle scenes, only the aftermath. I agree the decap and the amputation were both great because of what they don't show.

Yeah, I figured it was just because of budget constraints. They're not super detailed in the book either if I remember right.

Pretty sure that's a big part of it as well as taking up time. I've read that they do have some good stuff coming towards the end of the season in terms of battle/fighting. Hope it happens.
found this on the GoT wiki in regards to episode 9 titled 'Blackwater':
It was reported that co-producer Vince Gerardis had said that the titular and iconic Battle of the Blackwater will take up 16 minutes of the finished episode. However, this was later corrected to a general statement that it takes up a notable portion of the episode and is impressive, but likely not as impressive as some fans would like it to be
How long do you think the TV series will go on. I feel the books go into a direction that will be too difficult to follow for a tv adaption.
HBO has the rights to the entire ASOIAF series, and it's the third most popular HBO original series of all time. I bet as long as Martin stays alive long enough to finish the books HBO will stick with the series.
I'm interested to see what they do for the major battle that is coming up... in the books it was fairly detailed because of certain characters being heavily involved in it so I hope they spent a lot of their budget on it as it needs to be shown.

They've already shown they have no problem cutting certain characters or changing things so I'm sure they can adapt it in a way that will be fine for TV.

Please tell me that was the kids from the farm and not Bran and the other kid from Winterfell Theon has absolutely gone overboard!!!
Great scenes:
Tywinn and Arya (as always Arya steals the show!)
Tyrion and Cercei (I think I actually saw a little compasion in Tyrion in this scene, he seemed to want to comfort his sister, but didnt quite know how)
Jon and the wildling woman had some great scenes, I wish they woulda got it on though...He really needs some sex!!!
The meeting of the 13 in Qarth...doubleyou, tee, eff

Definitely what I was thinking. They make a point to say "those two orphan boys".
Theon is in over his head now.

Loved all of this as well. The Jon stuff annoyed me a bit....she was right when calling him brave but stupid/dumb. Qarth just got really interesting. Wasn't sure if Daxxos/Ducksauce would be behind all this but it's cool when he stood up and declared himself king.
has anyone else thought the last two episodes were kinda weak? not from a "by the book" standpoint but just from a general quality standpoint? Like all the teachers at my school watch Game of Thrones and today at lunch we were all talking about how the last two episodes were just really lame. Just 'this character' talks to 'this character'. Next scene 'this character' talks to 'that character'. Even the guys who haven't read the books said this season just doesnt have the wow factor of season 1. Next episode is the Blackwater so that should be cool, but everything up to it? I don't know...

Well, for people who haven't read the books it's always tough to live up to the first season of any epic show, so that doesn't surprise me.
I think people who read the books enjoy those conversations a lot more than the people who haven't read them, because the people who read the books know so much more about those interactions.
As for the past two episodes, they've been slow in the sense that there hasn't been a lot of movement on any front (Robb vs. Lannisters, Robb vs. Theon, Khaleesi vs. Quarth/Xaro, Joffrey vs. Stannis, The whole mess above the wall), but to be fair they've been trying to keep up with like a dozen storylines, so it's tough to get everything into a single hour.

Yeah, last two episodes have been among the weakest since early in the season, but I'm hoping that's to prepare us for the awesome final two episodes. Very excited for Blackwater.

The calm before the storm. They can't all be awesome (even though some scenes were). BIG battle stuff in the next few episodes, lots of progress seeming like it will happen. The last two episodes were about moving the pieces into the right place. They were weak but I think it's because they are setting the stage for a great final 2 episodes.
It has seemed like a very slow go the last couple episodes, as far as moving the story along. Like in this past episode we got to learn that Claisi in fact will go to the temple to get her dragons back. I kinda thought that's where they were going when they ran out in the episode before this one. This was my favorite exchange from this past episode....

I absolutely love everything with Arya (though I wanted to slap her for cleverly finding a loophole and risking Jaq'en's life....he's an honorable man and the red god needs a third name lol). Love their scenes.

Yeah, I've seen it spelled a lot of ways.
I also like that you can kind of tell who reads the books vs. who watches the show by whether they call her Dany or khaleesi. Everyone that watches the show seems to refer to her as khaleesi like it's her name, because that's what Mormont always calls her.
