Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
I can understand how people are upset with the schedule, but for me I feel like they did a good job aside from a few minor conflicts, and one major one (Sunday night), and I honestly expected it to be worse than it is. My one wish is that they would move the Strokes, Explosions or Superjam down so it's at the same time as Widespread Panic. Pretty upset about missing !!!, Pretty Lights, Beirut and The Black Angels but I'll be able to see a lot of cool stuff that I pretty much expected I would miss.
But in all seriousness it's probably the same reason why Bootsy and Dr. John conflict, they have to spread people out so a single stage isn't so crowded.
I totally get why they do that, but then why do they never have anyone playing any other stages or tents during the headliners? Switching either Bootsy or Dr. John to during Eminem would make so much sense, especially since a lot of people going to Bonnaroo don't even want to see Eminem.
They probably booked Eminem with a contract where it mentions that he will play unopposed. I think they offer that kind of contract every year to the number 1 headliner. Who doesn't want to play a gig with no other bands playing where 80.000+ people are.
biggest conflict for me... end of MMJ or beginning of Primus?
I've been thinking about this, and realized if I wait until the end of MMJ it will be pretty difficult to get over to Which, because probably more than 3/4 of the crowd will be doing the same exact thing (I wouldn't want to sit in front of a stage for an hour knowing that Primus is playing while I'm there, but I understand many will try to get close for AF). I'm thinking about doing MMJ from 8 - 9:15 or 9:30 then heading to catch the rest of Primus. Either way, what a night that's gonna be!!!
You have to remember, this board does not represent the crowd at Bonnaroo. Eminem is a huge name, and will have a huge crowd. Just because some of the elitists on this board are all "Eminem is teh worst brahs lol bonnaroo fail!!!!1" doesn't mean the majority of the people attending feel the same. He'll have 70K at his show, easy.
I know, but even a lot of my friends that love rap and hip-hop really dislike him. I would totally understand if there was a contract to play unopposed since he is the number one name, but putting either Dr. John or Bootsy during his show would make alot of people happy, both Eminem and Dr. J/Bootsy fans. It just doesn't make too much sense that they'll put all the tough conflicts and claim that they have to, but it's the exact opposite when it comes to a headliner. Like I said though, I love Bonnaroo and I love the schedule, and I'll be fine if it stays exactly the way it is!
First off, I completely agree with the complaint about having so many conflicts, yet nobody playing during the headliners' sets. When you have such a big music festival, catering to 80K people, there should be options even during headliners. Coachella, Lollapalooza, and ACL all offer those options.
Look at Sunday, if you don't like jam music, you're only going to have a half-day of music. My biggest complaint is that you give WP 2.5 hours to play (which is warranted), but you don't allow anyone to conflict with them for even an hour of that time. That's 2.5 hours of a huge music festival being taken up by one single band.
Second, on the other hand, there are quite a few people like me who don't really like rap and/or hip hop, but are excited to see Eminem. I'm indifferent towards his stuff. But...
A) I realize he's really talented.
B) He may be popular, but I feel like he worked his way there from the underground (so he's not that different from most of the other bands at Roo).
C) I have a nostalgia for his music (I'm sure a lot of us listened to his first few CDs while in middle and/or high school, before we got really selective with our musical tastes).
D) From what I've read, he's a rapper who excels in the live show (which is what 'Roo prides itself in). Unlike the majority of rappers who rap over backing tracks because they can't keep up with their own rhymes, Eminem supposedly trains day in and day out solely so he can put on a great live show and not lose his breath.

Not trying to sound snarky but doesn't offering options during headliners create potential conflicts? Or are you saying that they should have an option that you wouldn't consider a conflict? I think you're trying to have your cake and eat it too.

It eliminates that jam of top tier subheadliners that always happens right before the headliner starts ala The Strokes v. Explosions in the Sky v. Robert Plant v. Beirut v. SuperJam, or The Decemberists v. Ray LaMontagne v. Florence v. NOFX v. Preservation Hall/Del McCory, or from years back Wilco v. The Decemberists v. The Mars Volta v. Elvis Costello.
I understand that it could potentially create more conflicts during the headliner, but I just find it so unfortunate that year after year we're stuck with being forced to watch one band or do nothing, when right before we were frantically running between four stages to see a glimpse of some of our favorite bands.

I agree with this 100%! This year I'm pretty indifferent about all 3 of the headliners so I'd really love to have a second option, especially with clusterquacks like Sunday evening, Saturday Night, and somewhat Friday afternoon.

I'm okay with Unopposed Headliners but. Maybe the best option is to have bands play 15 min into a headliners set, and start 15-20 min before the headliners set is over. That way it's not an hour and a half of nothing going on for poeple who don't care about Emine, Arcade Fire etc.

I fully support having headliners being Unopposed especially since there are three very different headliners each year. It ensures people that they wont have to miss another great act because they dont want to miss a headliner and it would suck for the artists playing during the headliner bc their crowds would be significantly reduced. If you dont like one of the headliners thats the perfect time to rest and refuel before late night. I got a great rest during KOL last year so I was able to rage at Flips LCD & Galactic. Also having a Jam headliner on Sunday is both tradition and crowd management, they know that not everyone going wants to see Panic so many people will leave sunday night helping relieve the traffic on monday. And for people like me who love Panic we will have more room to dance!
It can't hurt having at least one of the tents running during the headliner. Did you see the crowd at Phoenix in '09 when they were scheduled during the same time as Phish's set on Friday (and they were a band who was originally scheduled to be in a lounge)?

Your points are valid, but I would like to see statistics on how many people show no interest in the 3 unnaposed headliners each year, obviously that information would be incredibly difficult to get and would never happen, though it would be interesting to see. Maybe 10%? 20% ? for me personally my roo top (3) tier headliner interest when looking at the lineups look like this:
2003:Neil young, The Dead 2004:The Dead, Dave Matthews, Dylan (until I actually heard the man....) 2005:DMB, Trey 2006:Radiohead, Tom Petty, Phil Lesh 2007:The Police 2008:Pearl Jam 2009:Bruce Springsteen, Phishx2 2010: DMB, Stevie Wonder 2011:
and I am in no way bashing this years lineup, I love it! I'm just assessing the top tier headliners.

To me.....this year has 6 headliners. Eminem, Arcade Fire, Black Keys, MMJ, Widespread Panic, Buffalo Springfield.
I know that only three of those are the top names on the card.....but all the bands are pretty much unopposed and have the prime spots on the main stages to really blow people away.
Honestly, before this lineup came out I wasn't an Arcade Fire fan (didn't look into them yet), haven't listened to Eminem in years, and couldn't care less about Widespread Panic......but I knew that the other names at the top of the card would be awesome.
And if you can't find an hour and a half of fun during Eminem or AF then I feel sorry for you. If you don't like the bands, go wait for a close spot for late night and have good conversations with the other people doing the same.

I was just going to say this (except I was going to consider Robert Plant one too). Having a festival headlining Buffalo Springfield, MMJ, and Robert Plant is a dream come true, and to me, is what I'm going to! Definately checking out AF as well!

-When I Hear My Name -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Blue Orchid -Passive Manipulation -Red Rain -Death Letter -My Doorbell -Hotel Yorba -Same Boy You've Always Known -Lovesick -Little Ghost -We're Going to Be Friends -The Hardest Button to Button -Black Math -The Nurse -I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself
Encore: -Ball and Biscuit -Seven Nation Army -Screwdriver
The hell are you smoking sang? Black Angels don't deserve LN? On what grounds?
guarantee you never thought of them as a late night band till they were listed as one. they just don't fit imo. they're not going to put on any different show late night than they would during the day. i put opeth there because i liked what they did last year with clutch/gwar.

Yea but the bands that "Fit" as latenight music are lame imo. Are ratatat, pretty lights, bassnectar, Girl talk, etc, etc all better at night? Of course! are they also all incredibly lame? You betchya.
Psychedelia belongs at night just as much if not more than metal IMO.
Agreed, metal can stay in the day where I can easily ignore it.
Disagreed! NIN and GWAR were amazing late night. Well NIN was amazing until the people who were having fun were yelled at by wook who said "its bonnaroo bro there is no moshing here".
I love the late night sets and think who they have scheduled will do the job, but metal could do great too. Opeth would have made a great late night set!
