I just saw them in Myrtle Beach in January, and they absolutely killed it. Their set was mostly older material from the early-mid nineties, but they ripped through about 20-30 songs so there was some new stuff as well. As far as him being a jerkstore punk, it's an obvious act, and the band actually belittles themselves more than they do anyone else. He did one of the most touching tributes I've ever seen at any show. A friend of his had died in a car crash the night before and his girl was watching from the side of the stage. His sincerity was as real as it gets, very moving stuff. Like Eddie Vedder at Roo 08, lol. Not to mention, as the head of Fat Records he's brought along countless other bands. The proper indie way I might add. One of the opening bands Old Man Markley all talked about how good he was to them. Take what he says with a grain of salt, it's just a joke.
Some albums to check out: The Decline; I Heard They Suck Live; White Trash, Two Heebs, and a Bean; So Long and Thanks for the Shoes; The Greatest Songs Ever Written (By Us)- a good greatest hits album to start with

Nofx ARE hippies these days.....they're socially conscious, politically left-leaning, environmentalists, who take drugs and play 18 minute long songs (well one anyway).
I'm pumped for this show. I don't even know much NOFX, but their alcohol-fueled, audience-degrading, piss-poor performances sound extremely entertaining.
As far as their material goes, what's best to start with? And what should I make sure to listen to before their show?
Here ya go silentjay, and anyone else for that matter looking for a pretty decent sampling of some really great NOFX songs.
I know I put my 'Fridays'/'CoCos' in jeopardy by stating that I have been a NOFX fan for about 14 years now, but they are just so much fun. Some call them mall punk, or faux punk. Call 'em how you see 'em, I see 'em as a fun band that does NOT take themselves seriously on stage. This show will be great!!

At first I thought this addition was a joke, like Electric Forest booking Reo Speedwagon. Then I realized both bands were still living. Still think either of 'em could easily headline a county fair.
I'm still befuddled as to how/why they are listed as 24th billed on the lineup. I like them, a lot, but wow...
I'd say it's about right. They're among the biggest punk bands of all time that aren't in that small top echelon (like the Sex Pistols). Plus they've been around a long time, so their following has grown through the ages.
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.

I saw them at the Warped Tour in either 2002 or 2003, and I seem to remember them playing in the afternoon before bands like MXPX, New Found Glory, and Good Fucking Charlotte. Have they really increased in popularity over the last 8 or 9 years to where they're suddenly in the top 1/4 of possibly the biggest American festival? I honestly don't know I haven't really payed attention to them since early high school.

a lot of the time the schedule for warped tour is drawn from a hat, so you get funky lineups like that. they're not any more popular now. it's mostly going to be those of us that grew up loving them in the 90s.

I saw them in Knoxville in February, and I was pleasantly surprised by the number of people younger than me at the show, and I'm only 23 and this was at a venue that is 18+ only. Of course, there were also tons of people my age and way older, but their popularity has grown with younger generations, too.

Start with The Decline if you don't like that then you won't like any of it. The past couple tours they have been playing all of the decline in cities that they have never played it in before.
After that: Punk in Drublic White Trash 2 Heebs and a Bean Pump up the Valuum Greatest Songs ever written by us is a good greatest hits collection.

My vote for an album to check out is I Heard They Suck Live. It is a little older, I believe 1995, but will give you a reasonable variation in their older material as well as some of their on-stage antics.
I guess the "punks v. hippies" thing was relevant in the 70's and maybe even the 80's. But today? You might as well be talking about rockers v mods. Please join the rest of us in the 21st century.

REO was the headliner for my county fair two years ago. Seriously.
I hope Fat Mike gets hit with a bottle of piss or s hit, I might be the one to throw it because Im a dirty hippie because I like the Grateful Dead and Widespread Panic
You're a dweeb. This is a stupid attitude to take. If you don't like it, don't go see it. Go eat some food or sleep or, I don't know, GO SEE ANOTHER ACT.
Are you really considering driving to Manchester, setting up camp, spending all that money, and then, in the middle of all the joy and fun and awesomeness of Bonnaroo, going to go piss in a bottle and throw it at Fat Mike?
That's so mindnumbingly stupid that I wonder how you are able to function in society.
Yes! This act alone makes up for the otherwise underwhelming "for me" artist additions. It's also the one more act I needed to be really pumped about this year's Roo.
I saw them in 2006 when they were playing The Decline in its entirety. That show was great. Can't wait to see how they troll the crowd!
A few years ago at Warped Tour it started to hail and there was some crazy lightning. They were told to wrap the show up and play one more song -- and they played The Decline.

Well, I've seen them twice in NYC and a bottle throwing battle was part of the experience bolth times. You may just have your chance if you show up!
The possibility of hearing them play The Decline again will probably drag me to this unless there are major conflicts. Rarely (never in most cases) play it twice in any city over the course of their career, so not many chances and it's their best IMO. Less time for them to do anything stupid, like that time Fat Mike broke his ankle in Norfolk and just sat on the stage the rest of the show getting drunk and sort of singing
