I love starting to dance more than necessary when a train of bitches are about to try to push past you. I think it's the best tactic to prevent spot-ruining.
This guy knows
Whenever people are trying to push past me, I just dance really hard, smile, and tell them "I hope you get to where you want to be, but I've been waiting here for hours, and I'm stayin here."
Unless it's a lady bringin the sexytime, in which case she may pass.
My first Pretty Lights show - 12/30/10 in Chicago - I was surrounded by the worsttt crowd ever. Drunk girls on the verge of throwing up, accompanied by their bro boyfriends who kept trying to pick fights. It ruined the first half of the concert for me, but I learned a great lesson in it: If the crowd is ruining your concert, MOVE! I went to the back of the venue for the second half of the show and it was a complete 180. Lots of good people, tons of room to dance, and quick access to concessions and bathroom. Then for the NYE show the next night, my group got front row center. Blew the night before out of the water.

Before I ask this question I want to explain myself. I grew up as a blues guy and over the last two years or so I've opened my mind to other genres. Long story short I've never been to a show like this...
What are you seeing? Besides some cool background effects, what is he really doing live? Open my mind a little bit, because the person I am going with wants to see them. I'm a traditionalist and if I don't see instruments i'm skeptical.
Just go into the show blind (or I guess deaf in this case). I stumbled upon Pretty Lights at the end of the night in 2009 and it was great. I enjoy a fair amount of electronic but generally not Dubby stuff yet most of PL, in 09 at least, was rather chilled out though and he just kept adding layer upon layer.

I found these guys threw the lineup, ever since I bought pre sale on black Friday my musical taste has took a 180 turn. I wasn't listening to anything close to what I'm now. I was a metal head forever then went to a straight dmb fan, and then from there to now..now I can sit here and listen to 30-40 bands on the lineup that I absolutely enjoy. (another little tid bit, sphongle is now my all time fav band). But anyways I now jam to pretty lights constantly, check out high school art class that's got some nice jammyness to it. I'm deffinatly gonna being seeing this show...THANK YOU to everyone at inforoo for opening my eyes to tons and tons of bands/artists I had no idea exist. I truly I'm grateful.

i wouldnt listen to half the shit i do it i had never gone to Bonnaroo. Thats why i find it so frustrating when people look at the lineup and instantly write it off because their 5 favorite bands arent at the top. If they only knew what was hiding beneath...

I agree with that. If I only wind up seeing band I liked before bonnaroo, i'll be upset.

I guess I kinda misread your question. What you're actually seeing is a big podium type set up with all kinds of computers and boards and stuff. You can't really see what Derek is going besides dancing and playing with all the fancy gadgets. He usually plays with a live drummer though, not something many individual producers do. But the name Pretty Lights really does hold meaning. The lights and lasers he uses are so damn cool.
His new setup when I saw him last week was pretty cool
But he didn't have his drummer. What's up with that? Does he still tour with a live drummer?
Yeah he almost always has Deitch with him. I saw him at Snow Ball a few weeks back and they were both there. Deitch also drums for Break Science, so maybe he was at another gig..?
I've seen him a couple times and always had a great time, but his New Years Eve show a few months ago really blew me away. Probably one of the most fun shows I've ever been to. He basically put on a 2 1/2 hour party and seemed very methodical about what he was doing that night. The light show was amazing too.
This was the highlight of the night for me:
Don't know that I'll catch his full set at Roo depending on who else is playing at the same time, but I'll certainly see a good portion of it.
My buddy that went and saw pretty lights a couple weeks ago in Raleigh was dissapointed with the performance. He said Derek was really drunk and pretty much just pressed play then fist pumped and stumbled around the whole time. Hopefully he'll take his festival performances more seriously.

My roommate saw him last year and said his show was incredible. I guess everyone has their off nights. Hopefully we get a (relatively) sober Derek and a great show at Roo. A poor performance will really be a downer for me.
I saw him about 3 times in a month this year and have to say his shows are never a boring moment. The new light set up is out of this world. When I saw him last on 4/20 in Gainesville he threw down a hard set full of his new and old hits.. u cant go wrong at a pretty lights so believe me..

I beleive you, normally I've heard nothing but good things about pretty lights. The show my buddy went to was on 4/19 so you saw him the next night. I guess he sobered up.
Yeah that's strange, I've never heard of a bad performance from Derek. I've seen him 3 times and it's been amazing every time. PL is definitely my most anticipated late night set. I'm pretty set on seeing MMJ friday night, then heading over to which ever tent PL is playing and working my way up to the front.
PL has been on my to-see list for awhile now. Top pick for night sets
If he drops Keep Em Bouncin and Take the Sun Away I will probably cry of happiness. Much love for his music and its ability to take away all your sadness, fears, and worries.

Since I saw Pretty Lights was playing this year, I put this show as a must see. I saw Pretty Lights in 2008, waiting for The Black Keys to play at Forecastle Festival in Louisville. Never heard PL before then but I was blown away and couldn't wait until the next chance to see him. This late night set should be thrilling.
So is it a common thing for the last latenight in a tent to play for a while after their set-time? I've heard stories of some people playing until 6AM but I've never witnessed it.
