I can play. Do you want me at Bonnaroo? We can acknowledge that many can play BETTER. And that was not always the case. So nostalgia is the only thing that explains the desire to see them perform.
if you don't get it, it's likely that no one on this board will be able to explain it to you. Just know that for a lot of us it is going to be an awe-inspiring experience. Who cares whether it's greatness, nostalgia or whatever.
Its a little like baseball in a sense, I would have killed to see Mickey Mantle bat in 1968 even though his knees were shot and he could barely run. Buffalo Springfield holds down a corner of music history and its going to be cool to see them out there even if they don't quite have the same chops. So, I guess I'm just a nostalgic history buff, but I can't wait to see them.
Bonnaroo might of really saved themselves with that last minute signing of Buffalo Springfield. If you took them out of the lineup, I would bet that a TON of people on here would be very disappointed with the lineup. Not me, I love the way Roo has expanded itself this year, but I think many would be let down.

Definitely agree with you on this. I would have gone even if the Springfield weren't on the lineup (c'mon, it's Bonnaroo X!), but adding them turned this lineup into the stuff of legends, for me anyway.
And they obviously aren't going to sound like they did forty-five (!!!) years ago. But to be able to say I saw the Buffalo Springfield live is worth the price of admission alone.
I'm reaaaaaaaaaaally hoping that they work out some electric arrangements for the songs. I would enjoy the acoustic treatment like they performed at the Bridge School benefit -- but can you imagine hearing a scorchin' Neil guitar-driven track like "Leave" on the farm?! Ooooohhh mama.

I agree. I love the lineup as it is but the fact that they got Buffalo Springfield makes it special for me. I never thought I'd see them and have been dying for Neil on the farm in some form. This is going to be amazing IMO. The lineup has a TON of my favorite bands so I would have been happy either way but this definitely makes the lineup that much better.
I would have been pretty let down if they wouldnt have worked this out. I mean it would still be a good line up and Id still probably go, but this is what pushed it over the edge in terms of awesomeness.

Exactly. Without The Springfield, the lineup doesn't have the wow! factor for me till the 4th line. I'd still be going, but I wouldn't be nearly as excited about the lineup.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it
They certainly can ALL still play and their songwriting skills are legendary. Furay always had a great voice and I hope he can still bring it. I've seen alot of "oldies" at Roo (without needing to look in the mirror) and have seen some great stuff. Jeff Beck, Little Feat and Robert Plant have not embarrassed themselves at all. One thing about the legends is that they surround themselves with great supporting talent. I expect an amazing show.
There is a nostalgia factor, no doubt but it's not like putting the album from 1967 back on the turntable and replaying it in 2011. Like many of the other "oldies" ( thanks quacker), the song doesn't stay the same, real artists grow with time and so does their music. While I'll probably be taking a stroll down memory lane, the message of the music will be different. Happened with Jeff Beck and John Fogerty last year and it will happen again this year.
So have we figured out where on the schedule these guys will be? Definitely on the What Stage, and I can't picture them during the day. I'm thinking the Jay-Z spot from last year, right after Eminem. There wouldn't be a late night on the Which Stage if it happened but I could picture a pretty big rap late night tent to even things out. I can't see Lil Wayne or Big Boi being in a tent, even if it is late night, but maybe Atmosphere, Wiz Khalifa, Chiddy Bang and Jovanotti. There is a lot of rap on this bill, so I'd expect there to be a tent on Thursday night dedicated to it.

I'm sure it's probably been brought up before, but what does anyone think their setlist will be like? Do you think they'll play much Neil solo/CSNY stuff, if any at all?
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.

We may get a song or two from solo works. But I wouldn't expect it to be like half Neil solo songs and half Buffalo Springfield.
I think it'll be a majority (if not all) Buffalo Springfield tunes.
Heres a setlist from the two shows for the Bridge School shows.
1.On the Way Home 2.Rock & Roll Woman 3.Child's Claim 4.Do I Have to Come Right Out and Say It 5.Go and Say Goodbye 6.I Am a Child 7.Kind Woman 8.Burned 9.For What It's Worth 10.Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing 11.Bluebird Play 12.Mr. Soul Play Encore: 13.Rockin' In The Free World
That's what makes this set so damn interesting though -- no one knows what the hell to expect! They played a Beatle-esque half-hour show at the Bridge School weekend, and given how high they are on the Bonnaroo lineup, I'm expecting a set at least double in length. So I guess they're going to have to work on some more tunes, hopefully with some electric guitars somewhere in the arrangements.
The Springfield didn't last long, but they certainly have no shortage of tunes to fill a 70-minute set.
Hoping to hear some of the CSN songs Stills is credited as writing like "Love the One You're With", "Southern Cross", "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" and "Wooden Ships."

Totally agree. And I mean, I have absolutely no interest in hearing Buffalo Springfield, as being a person born after the sixties, I am completely unfamiliar with anything they've done, nor do I really care to invest the time/energy/money to go back and learn the songs of a B-list sixties band (or third tier iteration of Stephen Stills' or Neil Young's). However, I honestly do appreciate the folks at Roo putting forth the effort to grab what many who are not me would consider a once in a lifetime opportunity to hear these guys that they have loved.
But, yeah, I think a ton of people would definitely have been pissed with the headliner portion of the bill (myself included) had they not added Buffalo Springfield, which makes absolutely no sense considering all that I mentioned about my intentions in the first paragraph. Hopefully they'll play some Harvest Moon stuff of Neil's.
I love the old (original) recordings. But I don't get ppl trying to relive the glory days through the old bones of the current artists. I don't mind people getting nostalgic, I just can't stand all the fucking posers on here pretending that they are actually familiar with Buffalo Springfield. It's like everyone on Inforoo is 50 years old or more. Cut the bullshit, everyone, okay? We get it. Everyone here loves music. We get that. And we know everyone here is supposed to perp like they know everything about every fucking band that ever picked up an instrument in some garage... we get that too. But seriously, cut the bullshit. Stop acting like every fucking band that gets mentioned is the greatest band ever or that they're your favorite band in the world, or that you know everything about everything, particularly if your balls hadn't even dropped before Kurt Cobain blew his over-rated brains all over a wall.
