Phantogram is better live and they have a live drummer. Similar bands only in that their a male-female duo, with male playing guitar and female singing (Phantogram girl plays keys.) Def check them out if you like Sleigh Bells (although Sleigh Bells is way heavier) Phanto is more electro-dream-pop with sick beats.

I'd imagine Phantogram is better live. They've been around and playing shows longer (I think). They do have some similarities, and I could really see them both playing in the same tent back to back on Thurs

Their tour does end right before bonnaroo though. I'd say their still well within the realm of possibility. Not too worried about it though, I'll catch them in Miami.
So.. I was thinking about how they could improve their live show. The drums over a tapetrack thing sucks. But a live drummer with a standard drumkit wouldn't really work either. The drums weren't recorded live, and weren't recorded to be played on live drums like that. I think best scenario would be someone on an electronic drumpad, glitchmob style.
I think this would be perfect for them, they could play their music live while still maintaining their crisp + hard hitting electronic sound on their albums

Hopefully they'll figure something out before the recently announced tour.
Honestly I don't think there's anything they can't achieve if they learn to loop very well - I'm talking both the guitar and the drum parts. A lot of the guitar stuff is very loopable; he's often just banging out the same riff for a while on any given track. Some combination of a killer setup as well as some multitasking from both members of the band could negate the need to add a member.
But it might be easier to just add another member to manage the beats while playing live. If they learned anything from James Murphy while touring together, maybe it's that you can make your album like an auteur and still put on a kick ass show with a band if you're playing with the right people.
It'll be good seeing them either way. They make fun music and they're both really nice - I bought a shirt from them when they played with LCD in Charlottesville. The merch booth is literally Derek Miller working the booth with a wad of cash in his back pocket and Alexis Krauss hanging out back behind him chilling on a cigarette. She's pretty tall.

They don't need a drummer.
The drum lines are insanely simple, so who cares? Backtrack is just as entertaining as a bland touring drummer that would just chill at the back of the stage.

So hopefully if they went that route they got someone who was at least decent, preferably someone who could have fun with it? Maybe it's just watching Sleigh Bells and LCD in the same night, but there's something underwhelming about the one that the other just has, and it's the fact that James Murphy, though the entire album is his creation and he might as well just throw on a backing track and rock out, it's way better for having an (admittedly very good) set of musicians behind him actually making the music in front of you. If the drummer is going to suck it's not worth it, but if the band clicks with somebody and he's fun and professional, I don't see why not.
And in the end it's just hard to see Sleigh Bells having much by way of legs if they're using a backing track extensively during live shows. It takes away much of the point of live music when 1/3 of the sound is *exactly* what you get on the record, and the entire rest of the show is beholden to that. Sure, Jack White could kick out his drummer who mostly just chills there and plays very simple beats, but at the end of the day it's worth it seeing Meg & Jack on stage and it's especially worth it because it gives Jack the opportunity to do a very freeform set.
At some point you hope to see a band progress beyond just playing the songs live, and with Sleigh Bells current setup, that's exactly what they're doing.

I have a hard time getting into SB. I like the "rawness" of them. I haven't ever seen them live, but I would love to check them out at Bonnaroo. They fall into the category of bands that I wouldnt pay just to see them, but definitely check them out at a festival.
What an ugly attempt at criticism...I see no reason why Sleigh Bells can't play a 45min show Thursday night and not kill it, even with their current live show...HAVE A HEART

haha rill rill... I actually love this song, but I don't know why... I mean it sounds like it was written by a teenage disney diva. This is the last song I'd play for someone to show them sleighbells. But I wouldn't be surprised if it became a hit single on pop stations

I've also heard they're not good live. With that said I'll still do everything I can to see them, plus they seem perfect for Thursday night so I doubt there would be any real conflict. I'm trying hard to temper my expectations, but I'm sure once they come out and start playing "Tell 'Em" I'll have a hell of a time.
I just can't believe this is the guitarist from Poison the Well. What a crazy change in style . Great stuff though I'll see them for sure, unless there's some type of crazy sched conflict.

I feel like a broken record here, but while they have alot of room for improvement on their live shows, they're still full of energy, awesome stage precense and lots of fun. It's not terrible as people make it out to be. IT WILL BE A FUN SHOW.
